After a short fight with HMS Ajax and Exeter and HMNZS Achilles, Captain Hans Langsdorf put the Graf Spee into the port of Montevideo. Fearing other British warships were awaiting him and being forced to leave the port rather than be interned, Captain Langsdorf scuttled his ship.
