Amin's army put up a fight for a time but collapsed against the Tanzanian Army. Amin held out at an army base as long as he could before fleeing Uganda by helicopter in April 1979.

The Saudi government (aka as the Saudi Royal family) gave Amin, a practising Muslim, much more than just asylum. He was provided with a marble palace, where he and some of his 40 children lived till his death on 16 August 2003. He attempted to return to Uganda using a faked passport in the early 1990s, but he was identified while in Zaire and sent straight back to Saudi Arabia.
