Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. George Washington inherited a Continental Army that was untrained, undisciplined, and terribly under supplied. From where/when did he get his first supply of artillery (cannons)?

Answer: The capture of Fort Ticonderoga.

When the Green Mountain Boys captured Fort Ticonderoga, they delivered the artillery to Washington and he used it to force the British out of Boston.
2. The British hoped to end the American Revolution by winning their first big battle where?

Answer: Bunker Hill

General Gage believed that the Battle of Bunker Hill in June 1775 would end the rebellion.
3. Why was the British Army ultimately unsuccessful in the Northern Colonies?

Answer: They could control the cities, but not the countryside.

This was a huge advantage for the Patriots - they were fighting on their home ground.
4. Which British general was convinced he could end the American Revolution by isolating the New England colonies from the rest of the colonial regions?

Answer: General "Gentleman" Johnny Burgoyne

The armies of General Burgoyne (from the North), Lt Col Leger (from the West), and General Howe (from the South) were all to meet at Albany to cut off the Northern Colonies. General Burgoyne was the only one to even get close to Albany - the other two armies never quite got there.
5. The Battle of Saratoga signaled the end of General Burgoyne's plan to isolate the New England Colonies from the rest of the colonial regions. Besides not accomplishing that task, what was the major result of the Battle of Saratoga?

Answer: The French officially become an ally of the Thirteen Colonies.

Before Saratoga, France was secretly aiding the Americans with money and supplies. Why secretly? They did not want to get their butt kicked by the British again - remember the French and Indian War?
6. Besides France, what other countries aided the American Revolution?

Answer: Spain and the Netherlands

Not only did France become an ally, Spain helped the Colonists by fighting the British along the Gulf Coast. The Netherlands also provided a much needed source of loans and supplies.
7. After the Battle of Saratoga, France officially became an ally of the Thirteen Colonies. What was the British response to this new development in the American Revolution?

Answer: They declared war on France

Bad move England! This created a multi-front war for them, plus they had other colonies around the world they had to defend - their forces were stretched very thin.
8. Which was NOT a battle tactic used by the Americans in the American Revolution?

Answer: Major concentration on holding on to the larger cities at any expense.

Those colonists just would not fight like the British wanted them to. How selfish of them!
9. After the French and Indian War, the two major powers left in the Northern Hemisphere were the British and the Spanish. After the American Revolution, what were the three major powers in the Northern Hemisphere?

Answer: England, Spain and the United States

Even though the British lost to the United States in the American Revolution, they still remained to the North(Canadian territory) while the Spanish still claimed West of the Mississippi River. Sorry France, you are still out of there.
10. Although the fighting in the American Revolution pretty much stopped with the defeat of Cornwallis at Yorktown in October 1781, the American Revolution did not officially end until 1783 when what happened?

Answer: Treaty of Paris

They just love to go to Paris, don't they! Remember the other Treaty of Paris - it officially ended the French and Indian War.
