1. What was the dynastic name of the French royal family?

Answer: Bourbon

The Bourbons had been in close competition with the Spanish Habsburgs, who had been dominant in Western Europe until this period.
2. What justification did Louis give for starting this conflict?

Answer: His wife's claim to the Spanish inheritance

The legality of the claim was dubious. Louis was determined to improve his situation in Europe. He claimed that as Spain had not paid a dowry, Marie-Therese had not given up her claim on the Spanish succession.
3. Which of the following was France NOT interested in conquering in this war?

Answer: The Palatinate

Louis wished to strengthen his north-eastern borders. He wished to gain territory that would gain him a natural frontier, in this case the Rhine, making it easy to defend France.
4. Which treaty secured the neutrality of the Holy Roman Emperor?

Answer: The Partition Treaty

Louis promised the Holy Roman Empire Spain, Milan and American possessions if he did not interfere or come to the aid of his Spanish cousins.
5. What was the name of one of France's leading generals in this war?

6. Which three countries made up the triple alliance?

Answer: Sweden, England and the Dutch Republic

This was a defensive alliance, as many states saw the power of France growing and feared Louis.
7. Which country did Louis blame for forming this alliance?

Answer: The Dutch

Louis blamed the Dutch, justifying his next war - The Dutch War.
8. What was the name of the peace treaty that ended the War of Devolution?

Answer: The Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle

The Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle was signed in 1668. France did not gain the Franche-Comte and the war was not the clear success that Louis XIV had hoped for. However, France did gain some fortress towns in the Spanish Netherlands, including Lille, Douai and Tournai.
9. Which territory did France return to Spain?

Answer: Franche-Comte

Louis returned Franche-Comte, only to regain it during The Dutch War and the Treaty of Nijmegen.
10. Who was responsible for designing the fortifications in the defensive towns such as Lille?

Answer: Vauban

Vauban was also responsible for the invention of the bayonet and ricochet fire. The other three individuals were involved in the building of the Palace of Versailles.
