Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Greetings, fellow culinary traveller! You have decided to undertake this journey to the world of acquired taste. It begins in Mesoamerica, where you are given this very popular drink which apparently you are unable to swallow without sugar. Its name originally meant "bitter water". What is it?

Answer: cocoa

Nowadays, chocolate is consumed with sugar and (frequently) milk, but the Aztecs used to drink the extremely bitter, unsweetened "xocolatl" ( which means "bitter water" in Nahuatl).
2. We're still in Mesoamerica! Which of these seemingly disgusting foods is eaten as a delicacy there?

Answer: smut-infected corn

It is called "huitlacoche" and more expensive than normal, "healthy" corn.
Ergot is another type of fungus that infects crops.
3. Ok, time to leave America. You're in Scandinavia now, it's extremely chilly and you want to eat something to keep you warm. At the restaurant you are offered a sandwich with "hakarl", a sort of local speciality. But why does the owner tell you to hold our breath while eating?

Answer: because hakarl is a rotten fish

Bizarre, huh? Hakarl is a Greenland shark that had fermented for six to twelve weeks and then was hung to dry for another few months. The reason for such weird preparing method is that Greenland shark is normally poisonous. I've heard it is delicious, but you really have to hold that breath.
4. Let's assume you've managed to swallow a hakarl sandwich and now opt for a dessert. Quite surprisingly, you are offered "Turkish pepper". Which country is this confectionery from?

Answer: Finland

Turkish pepper is actually a brand of salmiakki, Finnish liquorice known for its distinct, salty taste that is due to ammonium chloride. It is quite popular in Scandinavian countries, as well as in Germany and the Netherlands.
5. Who would have thought European cuisine was that unpalpable? Still choking on salmiakki, you are heading to India to enjoy some famous spices. But there you are quite surprised to find that, along with cinnamon, cardamos, saffron and anise, your dish smells of rotting egg. This is because the chef put some "Kala Namak" into it. If "namak" is the Hindi word for "salt", what does "kala" mean?

Answer: black

Black salt actually has a pinkish hue when powdered. It contains sulphuric acid, hence the smell. Needless to say, it is yet another delicacy.
6. Still in India, you are bound to be more cautious now. For a drink you order simple, bottled water. Strangely, it doesn't seem to appease your thirst. This is probably because:

Answer: it is distilled

How can water be an acquired taste? Well, technically it isn't. But try to drink only distilled water for a few days in some hot city of, let's say, Rajasthan and then tell me you didn't need any "acquisition". Distilled water removes electrolytes from you body, so it can be dangerous if you don't make up for those losses by eating a lot of salt.
7. You're leaving India hungry and thirsty. Your next stop is Thailand and you decide that the best way to deal with hunger and thirst is to eat a fruit. You see this enormous, green thing on a market and decide to buy it. You grab it and try to go to your hotel by subway when all of sudden you are told that you must not enter it with this fruit you're carrying... Wait, what was its name again?

Answer: Durian

Ah, the sweet durian. It is said to taste like almond custard with cream cheese, onion sauce and sherry wine. You cannot use public transportation in some countries while carrying it because its smell is devastating.
8. You finally threw that fruit away but now you are so hungry! Maybe in Japan you will finally eat something tasty. Which of these is most likely to put you off even before you know what it is? It has been fermented with certain type of bacteria, hence the disgusting smell.

Answer: Natto

Nothing better than fermented soy beans. Though I bet you'd rather eat natto than shirako, which is cod fish sperm, another Japanese delicacy.
9. Our last stop is China. Now you're so wise and experienced that you know trying new foods is no good and you just opt for an egg. But something seemingly goes wrong as it is dark green and it smells like salmiakki and kala namak combined! You check the menu again and see that you have ordered:

Answer: Pine-patterned egg

Alternatively known as century egg, it is a hard-boiled egg that has been preserved for "only" a few months. Even better, it is said to posess some healing qualities. Interested?
10. Home, sweet home! You have finished the culinary journey around the world and now all you want to do is curl up with a good book and your favourite soda. Coincidentally, it is an acquired taste itself! What is it then? You'll have no trouble falling asleep after drinking it - no caffeine!

Answer: Ginger ale

You love ginger ale, don't you? Even if not, you are bound to know someone who does. This is just how it works with acquired tastes - you have to get used to them first, only then you'll be able to truly enjoy them. Tea, coffee, olives, caviar and many wonderfully tasty kinds of cheese are also acquired tastes. So fear no novelty and explore the world's cuisine!
