Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This South American country - the 5th biggest in the world - produces about a third of the world's coffee:

Answer: Brazil

Brazil is by far the world's biggest coffee producer and has been the biggest coffee producing country for over 150 years. Coffee plantations cover over 10,000 square miles and Brazil produced over 51,000 60kg bags of coffee in 2017. Brazil is also the world's largest exporter of instant coffee.
2. The French brought coffee to this Asian country in 1857 and production boomed in the 1970s after war ended:

Answer: Vietnam

Vietnam is the second largest coffee producer, mainly providing inexpensive, low quality coffee. The vast majority of the coffee produced here is robusta. For Vietnam, coffee is second only to rice in importance to the economy.
3. This South American coffee-producing country is associated with Juan Valdez:

Answer: Colombia

Colombia is the third largest producer of coffee and the largest producer of arabica coffee. It provides a high quality coffee, with the European Union conferring its prestigious Protected Designation of Origin status on it. Coffee is known to have been cultivated here since the eighteenth century. The Juan Valdez character was introduced to advertise Colombia coffee in the 1950s.
4. Coffee was brought to this Asian country by its Dutch colonists and its various islands have distinct and complex coffee:

Answer: Indonesia

Indonesia is the fourth largest coffee producer - 25% arabica and 75% robusta. Sumatran coffee is produced using a unique method. Coffee from Java is so famous, the island's name is used as a slang word for coffee. All arabica coffee in Indonesia is hand-picked.

Indonesia is home to the prohibitively expensive Kopi Luwak coffee, which involves ingestion and excretion of the coffee cherries by civets.
5. Central America's top coffee producer, this country's capital city is Tegucigalpa:

Answer: Honduras

The economy of Honduras is very much based on agriculture, and coffee is one of the most important crops. Honduras was traditionally behind Central American neighbours such as Guatemala and Costa Rica, but outstripped them to become the largest producer of coffee in the region in 2011.
6. The arabica coffee plant originated in this African country hundreds of years ago:

Answer: Ethiopia

Ethiopia's arabica coffee is now grown all over the world. Comfortably in the top ten worldwide producers, Ethiopia's coffee industry is very important to the country's economy, with about 60% of foreign income due to this crop. Ethiopia leads Africa for coffee production and coffee consumption. Half of its crop goes to domestic coffee drinkers.
7. Coffee was brought to this large Asian country by Muslim pilgrims - it can be "monsooned":

Answer: India

Coffee is said to have been brought to India by the Muslim saint Baba Budan in the 16th century. Coffee is now a very big crop in India, which produces about 5% of the world's coffee. Prime growing areas are the shady hills of southern states such as Karnataka and Kerala. Monsooned coffee can be sought after and delicious. About 80% of the production in India is exported.
8. Robusta coffee is a native to this African country, with a capital of Kampala:

Answer: Uganda

Coffee is Uganda's most important export crop. Robusta coffee grows natively in areas around the Kibale forest, and Uganda has made efforts to make this a premium organic brand. This didn't work out, due to the "inferior" image of robusta coffee among consumers of high value food and drink.
9. This South American country's coffee production is centred on the eastern slopes of the Andes and southern highlands:

Answer: Peru

The majority of Peru's coffee is grown at an altitude of 3,000-6,000 feet and is harvested by hand. The arabica variety dominates. Peru has made strides to create a premium product through coffee collectives.
10. This North American country is the largest supplier of coffee to the USA:

Answer: Mexico

Mexico is one of the top ten coffee producers, majoring on arabica. Coffee was introduced to Mexico at Veracruz in the 18th century.
