Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Although the modern version of this game was designed by Reuben Klamer in the 1960s, it was originally published by Milton Bradley 100 years before, when Abraham Lincoln wasn't even President yet! This board game allows players to make a simulation of real life through several situations like going to college and getting married. Which game is this?

Answer: The Game of Life

The game began in 1860 as "The Checkered Game of Life", published by Milton Bradley, although it was modernized in the 100th anniversary of the game, so in 1960, a new game with a spinning wheel with numbers from 1 to 10 was published, also copyrighted by Milton Bradley.

Many versions of the game, stylized as "LIFE", have been released, such as "The Simpsons", "SpongeBob SquarePants" and "Indiana Jones".
2. Created by a University of Illinois industrial design student called John Spinello in 1964 and now distributed by Hasbro, this game consists in removing different objects from the body of a man called Cavity Sam, but without touching the borders, as this would activate a buzz sound. Which game is this?

Answer: Operation

"Operation" creator John Spinello sold the rights to the game in $500 to Milton Bradley, not imagining how successful it would become. The game includes a board with the picture of a man called Cavity Sam, whose body is perforated in many different parts and filled with objects like apples and meat ribs, making references to real body parts like Adam's apple and well, the ribs.

Many variations of the game, which have featured "SpongeBob SquarePants" and "Toy Story" characters to name some, have been published. In 2014, Spinello was offered help by Hasbro to pay a medical procedure for him, since he didn't have enough money. This was because he doesn't get any royalties from sales of the game as it wasn't part of the deal he made with Milton Bradley.
3. Mattel released a board game in 2011, better known for its video game franchise especially successful in Apple devices. Originally created by Rovio Entertainment, this game's objective is to slingshot birds against green pigs. Which game is this?

Answer: Angry Birds

Finnish developers Rovio Entertainment released the first "Angry Birds" game on December 2009, available for iOS (Apple devices). Many other subsequent games resulted from the success of the first. The board game is basically the same thing, as you place several plastic pigs and pieces of fake wood in a specific shape and try to knock down as much as possible for a higher number of points.

The "Angry Birds" franchise has expanded to film, television and even theme parks.
4. This game, first manufactured by Milton Bradley but managed by Hasbro, consists in asking yes or no questions to your opponent about different cards with images of people. The objective is to guess which character is in the card your opponent chose. What game is this?

Answer: Guess Who?

Originally created by Ora and Theo Coster, "Guess Who?" is a two-player game. One has a red-colored board and the other a blue-colored board. Both have cards with images of several characters, and all of these characters appear in a separate set of cards. Each player chooses one card and asks yes/no questions until guessing the opponent's card, and the first to do so is the winner.
5. There are also board games that are played with drawing skills, such as "Draw Something", a mobile game released in 2012 that consisted in drawing different words in your phone and then having the opponent guess the word. However, before this existed, a game was published in 1985 by Angel Games Inc, with a very similar concept of guessing words from drawings. Do you know the name of that game?

Answer: Pictionary

Hasbro bought the game "Pictionary" in 1994, originally created by Robert Angel and Gary Everson. A board made up of squares is used to identify different types of words that are to be drawn. The point of the game is to guess what the other team is drawing the most times.

The board version of "Draw Something" was released in 2012 by Hasbro and Zynga, company that bought the game from "OMGPop".
6. "UNO" is a Mattel card game invented by a barber in Ohio. The players stack cards and in each turn, must play one that matches either the color or the number of the card placed in the center, and the player that is left without cards wins. A variation of this card game is "UNO Stacko", that resembles which of these games?

Answer: Jenga

"Jenga", which translates to "to build" in Swahili, is a game created by Leslie Scott in the 1970's. The point of the game is to stack wooden blocks and then slowly removing them from the tower. If the tower falls while removing the block, you lose, so you have to be careful!

"UNO Stacko" is the same thing as "Jenga", with the added challenge of matching blocks with either the color or the number of the block played by the previous player, like in original "UNO".
7. "Scrabble" is one of the most famous word games there is. Tiles, one with each letter of the alphabet, that have different point values, are placed in a grid, and the point is to form long words so that your score increases. Which of these games is NOT similar to "Scrabble"?

Answer: Rummy

In both "RSVP" and "Upwords", tiles can be stacked, so that a word instantly turns into another with the simple placement of another tile. For example, if the original word in the grid is POOL, then the L could be replaced with an N and an S could be placed in each side of the word, forming the higher value word SPOONS. "Words With Friends" follows a similar format, although since it was first a mobile game, the possibility to stack tiles was not available.

In "Rummy", the objective is to match cards that belong to equal sequences.
8. "Monopoly" is one of the best known board games of our time, given its immense popularity among global consumers. Which of these titles did one of the first variations of "Monopoly" have in 1903, as a game trying to explain the single tax theory?

Answer: The Landlord's Game

Elizabeth Magie Phillips is credited as the creator of one of the earliest versions of "Monopoly". Her game, "The Landlord's Game", intended to explain Henry George's theory of single tax, and the concept of private monopolies. The game evolved and in 1936, Parker Brothers licensed the game for sale inside and outside the United States.

It is still being sold by Parker Brothers' parent company, Hasbro.
9. In 1974, Milton Bradley released a game that consists in dropping colored discs down to a vertically set grid, and connecting a certain number of same-colored discs in a vertical, horizontal or diagonal line to win the game. How many of these discs must be connected to win the game?

Answer: 4

The game, famously known as "Connect Four", is literally about connecting four same-colored token-like discs as they are dropped from the upper part of the grid. The game actually has a mathematical solution, first discovered by James Dow Allen. A study concluded that there are 4,531,985,219,092 ways of winning the game, so if you're ever playing, don't give up!
10. Frenchman André Cassagnes invented a toy during the 1950 decade, and later sold it to the Ohio Art Company. This company launched the game and made it famous. What is the name of this toy, which appears in the movie "Toy Story"?

Answer: Etch A Sketch

Etch A Sketch is a drawing toy equipped with a gray screen surrounded by a plastic frame, usually red or blue. The toy allows the user to draw different shapes with two knobs, one draws vertical lines and one draws horizontal lines. The toy was inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame in 1998.
