No Computer? No problem! We Had Fun Games!! Quiz

When I was a child (in the 60s and 70s) we would play games that didn't include computers or lap tops. We would use other items to create a game. See if you can find out what game I played.

Question 9 of 10
9. We would all stand in a long line. TOUCH YOUR TOES. Nope, we wouldn't do it. We had to hear someone's name first. "______ says". If we heard the name then we had to touch our toes. "_______ says, hop on one foot." You better be hopping. What name goes in the blank? Hint

Question 10 of 10

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I need some chalk to draw the numbers 1, 2, 3 and many more, on the sidewalk. After I have drawn all the numbers in big blocks, I have to toss a stone. What game am I playing?

Answer: Hopscotch

Hopscotch can be played alone or with many friends. You need to toss the stone to Number One first and then hop on one foot to the Number One. Pick up the stone (still on one leg) and then hop back to the start. You keep tossing and jumping until you get to Number 10. So much fun, until the rain comes and washes your board away.
2. This game can be played solo or you need two people to twirl this thing. Some people now do this just for exercise. One of the games we played was "Double Dutch". Can you name this game or what I use to do this?

Answer: Jump Rope

We would play just the basic game of jump rope. Nothing fancy at all. Some of the bigger girls would play Double Dutch, but you have to jump rope twice the amount with two ropes instead of one.

We liked making up rhymes for our jumping. "Mary and Mark sitting in a tree k i s s i n g...". We had so much fun and didn't need anything more than a piece of rope and a smile to make us happy.
3. Steady this toy. Hold the handle bars. Nope, not a bike. Put one foot on a pedal, now the other and hop up and down. Keep hopping and don't fall. Keeping our balance on this 'item' was the trick. It was fun, but do you know what this was called?

Answer: Pogo Stick

You can still find pogo sticks, even today. The spring would make the stick hop as you jumped up and down on it. It felt like we would go so high, but seriously it was only inches. We didn't use helmets like they use today. We fell, skinned our knees and got back up again. I know I hopped over 50 times one time. Always tried to beat our records.
4. You have to have a special way to keep this round plastic thing around your waist. I wish I could say how but you really have to try it to get the hang of this toy. It was almost like doing a dance to keep the toy spinning around your waist. What fun toy was this?

Answer: Hula Hoop

The hula hoop was a toy that could be twirled around you for hours... well, minutes maybe. Some people are so good they can twirl them around their arms, legs and even necks. I was a waist one myself. I think my longest time was about 2 minutes. Just recently I picked up one and was surprised that I could still do it.
5. This game came in a can with about 50 of these long straw like things that were dropped. You had to pick up only ONE without moving another one. If you could conquer that, then you picked up the second one. On and on until all the straws were picked up. The one with the most wins! What fun game was this?

Answer: Pick Up Sticks

I love the game of pick up sticks. I would be so careful not to touch the others. There was almost a skill to use the other side of the stick to finagle just right. I didn't always win, but I always had a good time with the game.
6. There's a line of us across the yard. One person has their back to us and yells "SOMETHING". When they turn around, no one better be moving, or they go back to the starting line. They turn back around and yell "SOMETHING" again and everyone moves slowly again. The first person to tag the person yelling, wins and gets to be the caller next time. What fun game was this?

Answer: Red Light Green Light

Another fun game that we would play for hours. Some children would attempt running and would always get caught. I would always go really slow and never had a chance to tag the person. But... I was never caught moving.
7. This game we would all line up and ask the person up front a question. They would respond with YES or NO. Whoever made it to the front first won and would be the caller next game. What question did we ask?

Answer: Mother may I?

Not Father, but always mother, not quite sure why. I would say "Mother May I take 5 baby steps?" The caller would respond with "yes" or "no". If you didn't ask the right way, you would have to go all the way back to the beginning.
8. For this game you need a place to sit down for 5 people but 6 people would play the game. Turn the music on and we would walk in a circle. As soon as the music stopped, we had to find a spot to sit. We couldn't? We would lose. What game was this?

Answer: Musical chairs

You could have any number of players, but you had to have at least one less chair each game. As soon as one person was out, they would remove another chair. Some people would play "Hot Potato" the same way. As soon as the music stopped, whoever had the potato would be out.

It seemed like it was always rigged, as the teacher would see who was by the chair. Better when the person with the music didn't see.
9. We would all stand in a long line. TOUCH YOUR TOES. Nope, we wouldn't do it. We had to hear someone's name first. "______ says". If we heard the name then we had to touch our toes. "_______ says, hop on one foot." You better be hopping. What name goes in the blank?

Answer: Simon

I always got people cause I would yell, "Simon says, jump up and down" and then I would yell, "pat your belly at the same time". If they did start patting, they were out because I didn't say "Simon Says". Lots of fun but always so hard to remember.
10. Anyone who was anyone had a "Duncan". You can 'walk the dog' or "go around the world". What fun toy was I playing with?

Answer: Yo-Yo

Yo-Yo's were famous and fun for many years. The Duncan company started making them in the 1940s. All of a sudden the 60s were the crazy fads for the Yo-yo. Everyone had one tied on their finger and we would all be twirling and doing tricks with ours. I wasn't very good with "walk the dog" but I could make mine spin "around the world".
