The work in question was Petronius's masterpiece 'Satyricon'. Petronius lived during the 1st century AD.

Answer: Pot-au-feu

Pot-au-feu is a simple stew that consists of beef, assorted vegetables and various spices. The variations of this stew are simply endless!
