That's a lot of pickle! This popular pickle has been made since 1922. Although the recipe is "secret", a good pickle should contain a mix of lightly cooked, crunchy vegetables in a sweet and tangy sauce. It should include cucumber, green tomatoes, onion, garlic, vinegar, coriander seed, allspice, cardamon and the piece de resistance - cinnamon.
2. Who was the original manufacturer of Branston Pickle?

Answer: Crosse & Blackwell

Crosse & Blackwell have existed, in one form or another, for over 300 years. Although it wasn't until the 1830's that the name Crosse & Blackwell was applied when Messrs Crosse & Blackwell purchased West & Wyatt and continued the tradition of producing savoury products. The brand has been purchased by Premier Foods in 2004 and then by Mizkan in 2013.

Lea & Perrins began bottling their sauce in the 1830's from their premises in Worcester, England. It was almost instantly a huge success.

It is rumoured that Worcester based chemists, Lea & Perrins were asked to recreate a sauce found in India by a Lord Sandys. They prepared a few gallons but it was found to be pretty repugnant and particularly smelly. The concoction was removed to the cellars and forgotten about for a few years. On its rediscovery, they decided to taste it and found it had matured into a delicious sauce.

The rest, as they say, is history.

HP Sauce was invented either my a Nottingham grocer, Frederick Garton, or a local gambler who sold the recipe to Garton to clear his debts. HP stands for Houses of Parliament and has 71% of the British brown sauce market.

In 2005, the parent company of HP Sauce (Danone) was bought by Heinz. In March 2007, production ceased at HP's Aston, Birmingham home and was transferred to Heinz' sauce manufacturing plant in The Netherlands.

Colman's Original English Mustard has been manufactured in Norwich, England since 1814. It is a bright yellow colour and is much stronger than most American varieties of mustard. The Colman brand was purchased by Unilever in 1995.
