Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the first meal eaten on the moon by astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin?

Answer: bacon squares and cookies

The complete menu consisted of three sweet cookies, four squares of bacon, peaches, coffee and a fruit drink. I guess NASA didn't want the moon pioneers to put on any weight!
2. What inspired the Oreo Cookie first produced in 1912?

Answer: It was an imitation of a Hydrox, a competitor's product

There are several possible origins for the word "Oreo". Some experts believe the word was derived form the French word for gold, 'Or', due to the original gold packaging. Others say it came from the Greek word 'Oros' for mountain since the original cookies were mound-shaped like little mountains. Still others say the 're' in Oreo represents the cream wedged between 2 'O's' of chocolate. One thing is for certain; oreos will always be in the history books as the top selling cookie of the twentieth century.
3. Which of the following peppers contains a significant amount of capsaicin?

Answer: habanero

Peppers containing capsaicin can be slightly addicting because they cause the brain to release morphine-like endorphins to counteract the pain from eating the peppers. The result is a feeling similar to "runner's high." Pimiento and paprika can contain some capsaicin, but only in minute amounts.
4. Which American city managed to consume the most pizza in 1990?

Answer: Milwaukee

I found this a little surprising. I really thought the answer would probably be Houston, since it's often named in the top five of America's "fat cities."
5. The Iroquois Indians used to plant these three vegetables together and refer to them as "the three sisters." What vegetables were they?

Answer: squash, corn, beans

The squash would help block the growth of weeds while the corn stalks supported the vines of the bean plants.
6. Blue M & M's replaced what standard color back in 1995?

Answer: Tan

Blue won by a landslide in a poll conducted by Mars, Inc. Pink and purple were close runners-up.
7. How many pounds of saffron will an acre of crocus plants yield?

Answer: 10

It takes about 75,000 flowers to produce a single pound of dried saffron, which is what makes it the most expensive spice in the world.
8. What menu change did American Airlines make in 1987 that they claimed saved them $40,000?

Answer: They removed one olive from the salads in first class.

Ahhhh, isn't it quaint to think of those pre-911 days when airlines used to serve full meals in coach, too?
9. Which popular soft drink contained lithium when it was first marketed in 1929?

Answer: Seven-Up

Lithium has been used as a prescription drug to treat bipolar disorder for about three decades now. The "free doses" were eliminated from Seven-up in the 1940's. Perhaps that's why the name was changed from the original "Bib-Label Lithiated Lemon Lime Soda."
10. In 1969, Baskin and Robbins produced a new flavor of ice cream to commemorate the July 20th moon landing. What flavor was it?

Answer: Lunar Cheesecake

On February 7th, 1964, Baskin and Robbins commemorated the landing of the Beatles at JFK airport with Beatle Nut Ice Cream. (Sounds tasty, doesn't it?)
