Question 1 of 10
1. This Tyranid organism is a monstrous behemoth - larger than a tank and so heavy that it must support its body with its front arms. Within its body, it stores lesser Tyranid organisms in a semi-larval state, ready to give birth at a moment's notice and unleash the creatures of the swarm. Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. Many creatures in the Tyranid swarm are capable of producing lesser Tyranids from within their own bodies. Whether they brood the creatures inside their own bloated bodies or they inject larvae into unwilling hosts, they end up creating more Tyranids if not dealt with.

Which of the following creatures are NOT capable of creating or producing other Tyranids?
Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. The body of this Tyranid organism is composed of sacs of toxic biochemicals and buoyant gases, enabling it to float without the aid of any wings or special limbs. In place of arms, it is armed with multiple tentacles called lash whips that ensnare any victims that manage to come too close.

Which of the following is this organism?
Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. The Tyrannofex is a hulking Tyranid monster that is occasionally armed with a composite weapon called a Fleshborer Hive. The hive is a breeding chamber of borer beetles, small insect-like Tyranid organisms that dig their way into host bodies.

Which of the following Tyranid creatures is usually armed with a very similar weapon?
Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. This Tyranid creature is actually a composite of two individual organisms. The massive sentient bioweapon on the creature's back spews a concoction of flammable chemicals much like a flamethrower. The creature itself is simply a digestive sac on legs, eating everything in its path.

What is this creature?
Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. Tyranid organisms are usually protected by several layers of chitinous plates. These bio-armour range from a few plates in the smaller organisms to entire layers of carapace and bonded exoskeletons in the largest Tyranid creatures.

Which of the following Tyranid species is the most heavily armoured?
Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. This particular Tyranid creature is a highly-evolved strain of the common Tyranid Warrior. Like the Warriors, this is a synapse creature capable of relaying the will of the hive mind into other nearby Tyranids. In addition, it is capable of enhancing the fighting capabilities of Tyranid Warriors in close proximity.

Which of the following is this creature?
Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. Many Tyranid organisms are capable of burrowing underground. Using thicker and broader scything talons specially-adapted to shoveling earth, these specialized Tyranids tunnel underneath enemy defenses and burst forth from the ground in close proximity to their prey.

Which of the following Tyranids is NOT capable of burrowing underground on its own?
Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. This massive Tyranid creature is a gun-beast; a walking, biological gun platform bristling to the teeth with various types of ranged bio-weaponry. Too heavy to walk upright, it supports its massive weight with two massive pairs of scything talons. Its most distinct feature is an enormous bio-cannon underneath its small head.

Which of the following is this creature?
Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. The Tyranids are known for having some of the most powerful psykers in the galaxy. The array of psychic powers Tyranids display range from merely hypnotizing opponents in hand-to-hand combat rendering them incapable of fighting back to highly-charged bolts of psychic energy that can blast the most heavily-armoured battle tanks to smithereens.

Which of the following Tyranid organisms is NOT a powerful psyker?
Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This Tyranid organism is a monstrous behemoth - larger than a tank and so heavy that it must support its body with its front arms. Within its body, it stores lesser Tyranid organisms in a semi-larval state, ready to give birth at a moment's notice and unleash the creatures of the swarm.

Answer: Tervigon

The Tervigon is a large, ungainly beast, heavily armored with thick chitinous carapace. It crawls forward supporting its massive weight with its front pair of scything talons. The creature's most striking feature is its ability to give birth to swarms of Gaunts, hanging in a semi-larval state in sacs from its belly.

As a synapse creature, the Tervigon can control the broods of Gaunts it spawns and can enhance them with any biomorphs the Tervigon has. However, once a Tervigon is killed, it sends a psychic shockwave that can cause the death of all Gaunt broods around it.

It is a relatively new creature, only having appeared in 2010 with the release of the 5th edition Tyranid Codex.

Answer: Zoanthrope

The Biovore is a living weapon, shooting out Spore Mines from the gun projecting from its back. The Harpy on the other hand, is a huge flying monstrosity that can also produce living Spore Mines over unsuspecting victims it flies over. The Parasite of Mortrex is a unique Tyranid creature that injects its victims with a large amount of larvae, which usually cause the host creature to burst in a shower of Tyranid Rippers eating their way out of the doomed victim.

The Zoanthrope is the odd-man-out in this group, as it slays its enemies with powerful psychic abilities and cannot by nature, produce lesser Tyranids.

Answer: Venomthrope

Introduced in the 2010 5th edition Tyranid Codex, the Venomthrope is a unique Tyranid organism - it carries no offensive weaponry at all, ranged or otherwise. Instead, this floating aberration is more of a support creature, protecting nearby Tyranid organisms with a cloud of toxic gases that enemies find difficult to see, and thus shoot, through.

While bereft of offensive biomorphs, the Venomthrope has several highly defensive ones. The aforementioned lash whips that act as the creature's arms wrap themselves around any opponents foolish enough to engage the Venomthrope in hand-to-hand combat, rendering them incapable of attacking the Venomthrope at their own pace. In addition, the gases emanated by the creature are highly toxic and eventually take its toll on non-Tyranid organisms in close-proximity to the Venomthrope.

Answer: Termagant

The lowly Termagants, cannon-fodder of the Tyranid swarm, are traditionally armed with Fleshborers - smaller versions of the Borer Hive.

While the massive Tyranid Carnifex can be armed with many weapons, Fleshborers are not among its many possible biomutations. Lictors and Trygons are close-combat specialists and do not have access to Fleshborers as well.
5. This Tyranid creature is actually a composite of two individual organisms. The massive sentient bioweapon on the creature's back spews a concoction of flammable chemicals much like a flamethrower. The creature itself is simply a digestive sac on legs, eating everything in its path. What is this creature?

Answer: Pyrovore

Another one of the creatures introduced in the 5th Edition Tyranid Codex, the Pyrovore is nothing more than a digesting biomachine in the Tyranid swarm. Its only purpose is to consume biomass for the hive fleet, processing any organic material it can load into its many digestion sacs.

In combat, the Pyrovore is a difficult enemy. Corrosive acids spew forth from its mouth and the Flamespurt symbiote on its back shoots out plumes of superheated fire. Even in death, the gases in the Pyrovore spontaneously combust in a violent explosion of acids, bone and flaming body parts.
6. Tyranid organisms are usually protected by several layers of chitinous plates. These bio-armour range from a few plates in the smaller organisms to entire layers of carapace and bonded exoskeletons in the largest Tyranid creatures. Which of the following Tyranid species is the most heavily armoured?

Answer: Tyrannofex

The Tyrannofex is one of the most heavily-armoured Tyranid bio-monsters described so far. Whereas the Hive Guard, the Trygon and the Tyrant Guard are described in the 5th Edition Codex as having bonded exoskeletons, only the Tyrannofex has the honour of possessing an Armoured Shell composed of at least a dozen layers of chitin plates.

In game terms, the Tyrannofex is the most heavily-armoured, having a 2+ armour save whereas the other three options only have 3+ armour saves.

Answer: Tyranid Prime

The Tyranid Prime is a tougher, stronger and more heavily-armoured strain of the common Tyranid Warrior. Introduced in the 5th Edition Tyranid Codex, the Prime is a versatile creature which can be armed with a variety of weapons, from Boneswords and Lash Whips to Deathspitters and Spinefists. It has armor as thick as a Hive Tyrant's, is as fast as one in close-combat and is even a better shot.

The Tyranid Prime is a leader-beast, not just a synapse node for the hive mind but also capable of boosting the combat abilities of Tyranid Warrior broods that it personally commands.

Answer: Tyranid Prime

As a leader-beast, the Tyranid Prime is evolved to lead, command and relay the will of the hive mind. It therefore leads from the front and has not been evolved to dig into the ground.

Raveners and Rippers are very much capable of tunneling underneath an enemy position and attacking their victims from behind or from flanks. The massive Tyranid Mawloc takes this offensive much further, possessing a large gullet enabling it to burst out of the ground right under a victim and swallowing it whole in one go.

Answer: Tyrannofex

The Tyrannofex is the most heavily-armed Tyranid monster smaller than a bio-titan. Clad in an armoured shell several caraoace layers thick, it is an extremely tough beast to bring down. Offensively, the Tyrannofex is a monster to be feared: clusters of toxin-coated spines line the areas of exposed flesh between its armour plates, spines that can be shot out at armour-piercing velocities. Its thorax is home to swarms of parasitic creatures that it can also shoot out in a deadly cloud. Its massive bio-cannon is the exit point of several bioweapon-symbiote hives within its body - from an entire hive of borer beetles, a spray of highly corrosive bio-acid to the tank-destroying cannonball slugs of the Rupture Cannon.

The Carnifex, Biovore and Pyrovore are all dangerous gun-beasts all their own, especially the versatile Carnifex. However, the Tyrannofex dwarfs them all.

Answer: Lictor

The Broodlord, Tervigon and Hive Tyrants are heavily effective psykers of the Tyranid swarm. The Broodlord is capable of causing severe demoralization in nearby enemies, or focusing on just one, it can render the victim helpless and hypnotized. The Tervigon is more of a support-psyker, its psychic powers instilling speed and action in nearby broods, or making them ignore wounds that would otherwise incapacitate ordinary individuals. The Hive Tyrant's powers are more offensive, either maiming or killing victims outright or rendering them incapable of effective combat.

The Lictor on the other hand is not psychic - its ability to attract other Tyranids is biochemical in nature, dependant on pheromones and not psychic signals.
