Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Choose the word that means to abscond or make off with in a hurry (oftimes with something stolen).

Answer: Absquatulate

Absquatulate was recently used by a friend in a correspondence - I remembered hearing it before and understood it, but it was not to be found in my dictionary.
There are so many more succinct words in usage that the old-fashioned or more obscure words often lose their prestige. Sometimes they die off from neglect.

Abatude is also old-fashioned in that it refers to a seldom practiced use. Before modern times, printing and easier ways to spend money, a large coin was often clipped if it was worth more than the selling price. This applied more to the precious metals than to others. Abatude refers to the clipped coin. Try paying for a 25 cent purchase with half a half dollar!

Agiotage is a stock market term that refers to manipulating the market via buying and selling speculations.

Aucupate means to go bird watching, It can also mean to lie in concealment waiting for a catch. It is from Latin meaning 'bird catch'.

Alexiteric, an adjective, can also mean similar to an antibiotic. The word is from the Greek meaning protection.

6. Which word means excessive nutrition to one part of the body?

Answer: Alogotrophy

Alogotrophy is often seen in morbidly obese people as one area of the body seems to fill with fat, fluid or excess nutrition - probably because it was the only route it could find. It is usually a distorting deformity, such as one leg being much larger than the other.
