"Barbershop with Monkeys and Cats" is a 1660 painting by Abraham Teniers. Teniers was a Flemish painter best known for his rural and guardroom scenes. Teniers was also known for his comical scenes with monkeys. In "Barbershop with Monkeys and Cats", monkeys are running a salon and tending to cats.
The main feature of the painting is a cat sitting in a chair and looking into a mirror to check out his new haircut.

Itzuintli dogs are very small, rare dogs that were once popular with the Aztecs. Kahlo was a dog lover and owned a few Itzuintli dogs that would sometimes find themselves in her self portraits.
