Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following is the most accurate definition of "vegetarian"?

Answer: A person who subsists on a diet composed primarily or wholly of vegetables, grains, fruits, nuts, and seeds, with or without eggs and dairy products

The correct answer is from dictionary.com. While some vegetarians may indeed be animal-rights activists, others have chosen to be vegetarian for health, aesthetic, or political reasons. Most vegetarians cite a combination of reasons for this lifestyle choice. Some vegetarians restrict themselves to a diet that is wholly lacking in animal products (such as eggs and dairy products); they are usually called vegans - which is still a kind of vegetarian.

People who "almost never" eat meat, while not true vegetarians, are sometimes referred to as transitional, partial, occasional, social, or pseudo vegetarians. (from http://vegetarian.about.com)

"New-age nut job" is my father's definition of vegetarian, but he'll come around eventually!
2. Which of the following is NOT a type of vegetarian diet?

Answer: The Paleolithic Diet

The Paleolithic Diet is also known as the "Caveman Diet", the "Stone Age Diet", and the "Hunter-Gatherer Diet". It includes meat and therefore is not vegetarian.
A vegan diet includes only plant-based foods and eschews animal products entirely. Lacto-ovo vegetarians do not eat meat, fish or poultry, but include eggs and milk products in their diets.
The Ornish Diet, created by Dr. Dean Ornish, is a very low-fat, vegetarian program intended to prevent or reverse heart disease.
3. Which of the following statements, which are generally acknowledged as true by vegetarians, is controversial?

Answer: All of these

Any philosophy will attract dissenters and debate. Vegetarian diets have been disparaged for being too low in protein, too dangerous, too extreme, too expensive, and even for ENCOURAGING the killing of animals (because plowing fields to plant grain, etc., destroys more wild animal burrows and habitats than raising livestock does)!
Anyone contemplating a change in his or her diet is well advised to learn as much as possible, from a variety of reliable sources.
4. When asked if he was a vegetarian for the sake of health, which writer famously said, "Yes, for the health of the animals."?

Answer: Isaac Bashevis Singer

All of the answers are vegetarian writers, but the quote is Singer's. The winner of the 1978 Nobel Prize in Literature lived to be 87 and frequently touched on vegetarian themes in his wonderful stories.
5. All vegetarians have a decreased risk of heart disease and obesity.

Answer: False

While it is true that many vegetarian diets are extremely healthy, simply giving up animal products does not guarantee a lower risk of chronic disease. Some vegetarians replace unhealthy high-fat animal products with full-fat milk and cheese, which contain saturated fat and contribute to heart disease.

A vegetarian diet may legitimately contain less-than-healthy foods such as French fries, potato chips, and doughnuts.
6. The book "Famous Vegetarians and Their Favorite Recipes" by Rynn Berry does NOT include which of the following?

Answer: "Diamond" Jim Brady's Spinach Soufflé

The book's subtitle is "Lives and Lore from Buddha to the Beatles".
Mr. Brady was a well-known and flamboyant carnivore who frequented the steak houses of New York City in the beginning of the previous century.
Pythagoras was such a famous vegetarian that, for many centuries, persons who chose not to eat meat were called "Pythagoreans". (info from www.whfoods.com)
Christ's inclusion as a vegetarian, which is controversial, is based on a theory that he may have been a member of the Essene sect, who were possibly vegetarians.
The cookbook also includes recipes from Leonardo Da Vinci, Paul and Linda McCartney, and many others.
7. Which of the following is NOT a subdivision of Living and Raw Foods vegetarianism?

Answer: Pescetarians

Pescetarians include fish, often cooked, in their vegetarian diets.
"Living and Raw Foodists believe in eating only an UNCOOKED, UNHEATED, UNPROCESSED and ORGANIC plant based diet." (from www.living-foods.com)
Sproutarians, fruitarians, and juicearians are raw foodists who eat mostly sprouts, fruit (and nuts and seeds), and juices, respectively.
8. Meat is an addictive substance.

Answer: False

There is no evidence to support a "meat addiction". Humans eat meat by choice, custom, or through a preference for doing so. If a person chooses to decrease his or her meat intake with a view toward gradually becoming vegetarian, this is often quite easily accomplished through substituting non-meat foods for those of animal origin.
9. Many people have heard of vegetarian "meat" substitutes made from soy, such as tofu, "tofurkey", and tempeh. Which of the following is also a meat protein substitute?

Answer: Quorn

Quorn is a meat substitute made from mycoprotein, similar to mushrooms. It is vegetarian but not vegan, since it contains egg white. (www.quorn.com)
Quinine is a medication used to treat malaria.
Yohimbe is a tropical African tree.
Yerevan is the capital of Armenia. (Darn those geography quiz answers...they sneak in everywhere.)
10. He won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1921, and he also said this: "Nothing will benefit human health and increase chances of survival for life on earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet."

Answer: Albert Einstein

The International Vegetarian Union's website (www.ivu.org) states that Einstein was probably a vegetarian only for the last year of his life but that he had always been interested in the lifestyle. I hope that this quiz has been interesting and informative and that you enjoyed it!
