quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Fact #2: Treasure Chest How can you tell how old a panda is? (Remember, this is according to the book. Sadly, these aren't real panda facts.)

Answer: Measure the distance between its nipples

This particular measurement yields two equally important facts about the panda, using both measuring systems. The distance between the nipples in inches reveals the age of the panda in years, while in centimetres, it tells us how many times it has fallen in love. From a glance, therefore, you can tell if you're looking at a mature panda with a big heart, or a relatively young panda just starting out in the world of love.
2. Fact #31: Pox Shock If a panda contracts chicken pox, what part (or parts) of its body will fall off (or out)? (Remember, this is according to the book. Sadly, these aren't real panda facts.)

Answer: Eyes

Pandologists discovered that pandas are not affected by any human diseases at all, with the exception of varicella, or chicken pox. Contrary to humans, the panda will exhibit none of the symptoms commonly associated with chicken pox, like spots on the skin. If left untreated for ten days, however, the panda's eyes will fall out.
3. Fact #34: Nuts About Pandas Which naturalist's mistake caused the panda to be classified as a nut instead of a mammal? (Remember, this is according to the book. Sadly, these aren't real panda facts.)

Answer: Joseph Banks

According to the book, the accidental classification occurred in 1831 as a result of what was described as a "bureaucratic mix-up". The veracity of this fact is dubious, however, as Banks died in 1820.
4. Fact #36: Pandas on the Menu Which French king regarded the meat of a panda to be "juicier than lobster and tastier than peacock"? (Remember, this is according to the book. Sadly, these aren't real panda facts.)

Answer: Louis XVI

The consumption of panda meat has become a strange tradition in France since the king's declaration of its wonderful palatability. However, this "luxury" is only available to monarchs, presidents and similarly ranked members of the society upon leaving their position of power. Controversially, Jacques Chirac rehearsed his final panda meal four times in order for his chef to perfect the accompanying sauce.
5. Fact #50: The Unluckiest Bears According to this fact, what happens when a panda is struck by lightning? (Remember, this is according to the book. Sadly, these aren't real panda facts.)

Answer: Its white fur turns black and vice versa

In the world of pandology (the study of pandas, don't you know), a negative panda is created when it is struck by lightning. Its white fur turns black, and its black fur turns white. Of course, the chances of creating a negative panda are infinitesimally small, but should a negative panda be struck again by lightning, its fur will readjust to normal.

It will then be known as a double negative panda.
6. Fact #54: Bear in the World In which country is "panda" colloquially used to refer to a male divorcee? (Remember, this is according to the book. Sadly, these aren't real panda facts.)

Answer: Turkey

In addition to this Turkish expression, Brazilians also call some who has a bad hangover a panda. Cockney rhyming slang features the phrase "panda bear", which is used to refer to a particular undergarment worn by ladies. Upon visiting the East End of London, one might hear the phrase, "The trouble and strife bought a new panda bear yesterday."
7. Fact #55: Scriptic Puzzle In 1997, a month after giving one of their resident pandas a typewriter, the employees of Chicago Zoo discovered the panda had written what? (Remember, this is according to the book. Sadly, these aren't real panda facts.)

Answer: A script for a film

Attempting to emulate the "infinite monkeys with infinite typewriters" theory, it was discovered by scientists that a single panda with a typewriter can indeed write something, not necessarily Shakespeare but certainly something equally decipherable and in a much shorter time than infinity.

The film script was subsequently picked up by a major motion picture company and became "Runaway Bride".
8. Fact #56: Tank You Very Much According to this fact, what will pandas do when threatened by a predator? (Remember, this is according to the book. Sadly, these aren't real panda facts.)

Answer: Stack on top of one another

It is said that, when threatened, the pandas will attempt to turn the tables on their foe. By clambering on top of one another, the pandas will form the shape of something that might intimidate the foe, be it a much larger panda or even, in rare cases, a tank.
9. Fact #87: White Out When a panda's fur turns completely white, what does this mean will soon occur? (Remember, this is according to the book. Sadly, these aren't real panda facts.)

Answer: Earthquake

History reports that a panda residing at San Francisco zoo did indeed turn white prior to the 1906 earthquake, but at the time, no one was aware of the connection between the panda's fur colour change and an impending earthquake. Afterwards, the panda in question, Yip Wing San, was relocated to the zoo's polar bear area, mistaken for a young polar bear cub.
10. Fact #100: Greek Tragedy The ill-fated follow-up to the Wooden Horse of Troy was the Wooden Panda of which Greek city? (Remember, this is according to the book. Sadly, these aren't real panda facts.)

Answer: Corinth

If only the ancient Greeks had known about one of the greatest rules of magic: never perform the same trick twice. Riding high on the success of their scheme to enter the city of Troy by concealing themselves in a large wooden horse, they turned their sights towards Corinth and constructed a large wooden panda.

Unfortunately, word had travelled quickly throughout the land and the Corinthians recognised the wooden panda was a trick upon its arrival at the gates of their city. Rather than fall prey to the same trick their Trojan brethren had, the Corinthians pushed the wooden panda into the sea.
