Clary later discovers that the werewolf is none other than her mother's lifelong friend Luke.

At the end of the book we discover that Valentine is in fact Jace's father, and Jace is Clary's brother Jonathan whose body was apparently found dead. According to Valentine, he made it look like he and Jace had died the day of the Uprising, when they were in hiding. Valentine then made it look like he died and so Jace was orphaned to the Lightwoods for guardianship.
