The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones Quiz

There are two quotes because one is for the beginning of the book and one is for the beginning of Part One. There are three parts all together throughout the book, each with its own quote. Here are the two quotes from the beginning:

Answer: Made in Brooklyn

Clary thinks that Simon sticks out like a sore thumb in Club Pandemonium because, well, here's her summary:

"He looked less as if he were contemplating the powers of darkness and more as if he were on his way to chess club."

Answer: An eye

Clary sees this Mark during her and Jace's first conversation about the Shadowhunter world. Jace tells Clary she has the Sight, and that he has to bring her to the Institute because Hodge wants to talk to her.

"He [Jace] glanced up at the sky. 'It's nearly full dark. We should go.'
'We? I thought you were going to leave me alone.'
'I lied,' Jace said without a shred of embarrassment. 'Hodge said I have to bring you to the Institute with me. He wants to talk to you.'"

Answer: Blue

Church is described as a "fat blue Persian". Wherever Church is, Hodge isn't far behind. While the Jace and the Lightwoods sometimes try to use Church to find Hodge, most of the time the cat leads them elsewhere - like to the kitchen.

"She [Clary] glanced toward the door where the fat blue Persian was curled up like a small ottoman. He rose as she came forward, fur rippling like liquid. With an imperious meow he led her into the hall."

Answer: Fakes

Madame Dorothea was serving tea and Jace said it was fine as long as it wasn't Earl Grey. Clary was shocked that Jace knew what bergamot was. She finds out about the cucumber because Madame Dorothea serves cucumber sandwiches. Jace calls Madame Dorothea a liar because he does not think she is a real witch.

"'Cucumber and bergamot,' Clary said. 'Is there anything else you hate that I ought to know about?'
Jace looked at Dorothea over the rim of his teacup. 'Liars,' he said."

Answer: The Circle of Raziel

Hodge tells Jace and Clary about the Circle after they tell him about their day. They tell him about the confrontation in Luke's apartment and that they were attacked by a Forsaken. Hodge fears the Circle is rising again.

"He [Hodge] was carrying a large book bound in brown leather...He cleared his throat before he read aloud: 'I hereby render unconditional obedience to the Circle and its principles...I will be ready to risk my life at any time for the Circle, in order to preserve the purity of the bloodlines of Idris, and for the mortal world with whose safety we are charged.'
Jace made a face. 'What was that from?'
'It was the loyalty oath of the Circle of Raziel, twenty years ago,' said Hodge..."

Answer: A large coffee and coconut pancakes

Clary, for the first part of the conversation, couldn't find what to order because she couldn't find the human food. Some of the non-human options were locusts and honey, raw meat and fish, a toasted bat sandwich, and different types of animal blood on tap.

"She [Kaelie] smiled with sharp little teeth. 'Know what you're having?'
Jace grinned. 'The usual,' he said...
'Me too,' Alec chimed in...Isabelle fastidiously ordered a fruit smoothie, Simon asked for coffee and Clary, after a moment's hesitation, chose a large coffee and coconut pancakes."

Answer: Blue

While Clary, Jace and Alec went to talk to Magnus privately, Isabelle and Simon hit the party he was throwing. Isabelle got quite drunk and Simon, in an attempt to impress Isabelle, drank a blue drink that turned him into a rat.

"'Where's Simon?' Clary interrupted.
Isabelle wobbled. 'He's a rat,' she said darkly...
'She's drunk,' said Jace, beginning to turn away in disgust.
'I'm not,' Isabelle said indignantly. 'Well, maybe a little, but that's not the point. The point is, Simon drank one of those blue drinks--I told him not to, but he didn't listen--and he turned into a rat.'"

Answer: Simon

Simon (as a rat) was taken by vampires into their lair in an abandoned hotel. Clary and Jace went after him to rescue him. Clary and Jace, however, went from rescuing Simon to being in a middle of a war as werewolves (led by Luke, we're later told) come into the lair.

"She [Clary] shot him [Jace] a furious look. 'He's not a rat. He's Simon. And he bit Raphael for you, you ungrateful cretin.' She yanked her arm free and dashed after Simon, who was crouched in the folds of the drapes, chittering excitedly and pawing at them. Belatedly realizing what he was trying to tell her, she yanked the drapes aside. They were slimy with mold, but behind them was--
'A door,' she breathed. 'You genius rat.'"

She tells this to Jace when they are sitting in the greenhouse on the eve of Clary's birthday. She and Jace are swapping birthday stories, like Jace's about the year he wanted to take a bath in spaghetti - and got to.

"'When I was twelve, I wanted a tattoo,' Clary said. 'My mom wouldn't let me have that, either.'
Jace didn't laugh, 'Most Shadowhunters get their first Marks at twelve. It must have been in your blood.'
'Maybe. Although I doubt most Shadowhunters get a tattoo of Donatello from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on their left shoulder.'
Jace looked baffled. 'You wanted a turtle on your shoulder?'"

Answer: B'nai B'rith

Simon saves the day by breaking the skylight, though Clary tells an injured and possibly dying Alec later that he did to make him feel better. Clary gets annoyed, because even this doesn't make Jace stop treating Simon like a stupid mundane.

"Simon, leaning against the wall watching them [Isabelle and Alec], looked utterly drained. Clary squeezed his hand as she passed him. 'Thank you,' she whispered. 'That was amazing.'
'Don't thank me,' he said, 'thank the archery program at B'nai B'rith summer camp.'"

Answer: William Carlos Williams

This quote is at the start of "Part Three: The Descent Beakons". Part One was "The Descent" and Part Two was "Easy is the Descent". Part Two had a quote completely in Latin, which was by Virgil from "The Aeneid". Here is the quote from Part Three:

as the ascent beckoned."

Answer: Three weeks

The first chapter of Part Three is Luke's life story. Luke was bit on a mission with Valentine as they tried to clear out the nest of wolves who had killed Valentine's father years before. Luke trusted Valentine to watch his back, but he did not.

"'Not all werewolf bites result in lycanthropy. I healed of the injury and passed the next weeks in a torment of waiting. Waiting for the full moon. The Clave would have locked me in an observation cell, had they known. But Valentine and Jocelyn kept silent. Three weeks later the moon rose full and bright, and I began to change.'"

Answer: Clarissa

This is the end of a physical and emotional battle, especially for Jace. He has now found out that Valentine is his father, Clary is his sister and nearly everything he thought he knew of his family is a lie. At the end, Jace and Clary hug and he keeps whispering her name.

"He [Jace] made a sound like a choked laugh before he reached out and pulled her [Clary] into his arms. She was aware of Luke watching them from the window, but she shut her eyes resolutely and buried her face against Jace's shoulder. He smelled of salt and blood, and only when his mouth came close to her ear did she understand what he was saying, what he had been whispering before, and it was the simplest litany of all: her name, just her name."

Clary is shocked because even while Hodge was fleeing and betraying everyone at the Institute, he still took the time to call Magnus to heal Alec.

"Clary thought of the folded paper Hodge had thrown into the fire after Valentine had gone. He was a strange man, she thought, who'd taken the time to do what he could to save Alec even while betraying everyone--and everything--he'd ever cared about."
