Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This character was part Shadowhunter and part demon with the power to Change into other people. Who was she?

Answer: Tessa Gray

Tessa Gray was the main character of the trilogy. At the beginning of the first book, "Clockwork Angel", she traveled from her home in New York City to London after she had received a letter from her brother who had been working there. Upon arrival, though, she was kidnapped by the Dark Sisters. Eventually, she was rescued by the Shadowhunters of the London Institute and began to live with them. Her mother was a Shadowhunter without Marks and her father was an Eidolon demon. Because of this lineage, she was a warlock with the ability to Change into other people if she held something that belonged to them. Throughout the series, she was in love with both Will and Jem. Because of her immortality and the fact that Jem had become a Silent Brother, she was able to marry and live her life with both boys.

Tessa was a smart, independent girl who loved to read. She wore a necklace with a small clockwork angel on it.
2. This character left his family at the age of twelve because he thought a demon had cursed him. Who does this describe?

Answer: Will Herondale

Will Herondale was born to an ex-Shadowhunter and a Mundane woman in Wales. When Will was twelve, he accidentally released a demon from his father's Pyxis. The demon told Will that he had placed a cursed on him so that anyone who loved Will would die. The next day, when Will's older sister, Ella, died, Will decided to leave his family to protect them and went to the London Institute. Later, when Tessa arrived and he fell in love with her, he sought the help of the warlock Magnus Bane to help him to find the demon who had cursed him so he could break the curse. When they eventually found the demon, however, it turned out that there had never been a curse. At that point, Will had believed himself cursed for about five years and during that time he had been rude to everyone and pushed them away to save them. After discovering the curse was fake, he was able to show his true personality.

Will eventually went on to marry Tessa and have children with her. He also became the head of the London Institute after Charlotte.
3. What character was addicted to a drug called yin fen and played the violin?

Answer: Jem Carstairs

James "Jem" Carstairs was born in Shanghai, China, and was raised at the Institute there until the age of twelve when a demon seeking revenge killed his parents. Before his parents died, the demon had tortured Jem by giving him a drug called yin fen, which he became addicted to. From that point on, with no cure, he was slowly dying from the drug, but he could not stop using it or he would die much faster. With his parents dead, he came to live at the London Institute where he became Will's parabatai. Along with Will, Jem fell in love with Tessa and proposed to her.

However, soon after, Mortmain bought up the city's supply of yin fen. Without the drug, Jem's health quickly deteriorated. On his deathbed, Jem chose to become a Silent Brother. Because Silent Brothers could not marry and must leave their former lives behind, he had to end his engagement with Tessa.

The two met up on the same day every year on Blackfriars Bridge, until eventually he was cured and the two picked up their relationship.
4. Which character was the head of the London Institute through the books and in the end became the first female Consul?

Answer: Charlotte Branwell

Charlotte Branwell's father was the head of the London Institute before her, which was why she was appointed after his death. She was married to Henry, who was supposed to help run the Institute, but really she did most of the work. She was a great leader and most everyone in the Institute was loyal to her. At the end of the trilogy, the Clave asked her to become the next Consul.
5. What character was an inventor who, with the help of Magnus Bane, created the first Portal?

Answer: Henry Branwell

Henry Branwell was married to Charlotte. Instead of helping his wife run the Institute, he spent most of his time in the crypt inventing a number of different gadgets to help the Shadowhunters. Although many of the inventions needed improvement, some he was able to get to work.

He created the first Portal, which allowed Shadowhunters to travel great distances instantly, with the help of Magnus's magic. In the last book, "Clockwork Princess", Henry was paralyzed from the waist down in a battle with an automaton.
6. What character never wanted to be a Shadowhunter and betrayed the people of the Institute for love?

Answer: Jessamine Lovelace

Jessamine Lovelace came to live at the London Institute after her parents died in a fire when she was fourteen. Her parents had not lived a Shadowhunter life, and Jessamine wanted nothing more than to marry a Mundane man and live the life of a proper woman.

She fell in love with Tessa's brother, Nate, who was working for Mortmain. He married her and convinced her to spy on Charlotte for him. When her betrayal was discovered, she was sent to the Silent City. When she was eventually released, she ended up dying in an automaton attack in the courtyard of the Institute. That Christmas, Will saw her ghost there, and she told him that she was the new guard of the Institute.
7. What was the name of the Institute's maid who fell in love with Gideon Lightwood?

Answer: Sophie Collins

Sophie Collins had the Sight, which made her the idle maid for the Institute. Prior to working for Charlotte, she worked in a different home. While there, the son of her boss came on to her and when she turned him down, he cut her face with a knife, giving her a long scar.

When Tessa came to the Institute, they quickly became friends. While Gideon trained her to fight, the two fell in love and he later proposed to her. In "Clockwork Princess", she Ascended and became a Shadowhunter.
8. Which character, despite initially not getting along with Will, ended up being Will's brother-in-law?

Answer: Gabriel Lightwood

Gabriel Lightwood began to hate Will when the other boy embarrassed his sister and broke his arm at a Christmas party. Gabriel had been raised by his father, Benedict, after his mother had died when he was five. After Benedict became a demonic worm and Gabriel helped to kill him, Gabriel came to live at the Institute, where his older brother, Gideon, had already been living.

When Gabriel met Will's younger sister, Cecily, they began to have feelings for each other and eventually started a relationship.

In the final book's epilogue, it was revealed that they had gotten married and had children.
9. This character came to London with the hopes of bringing her brother home, but ended up joining the Shadowhunters. Who was she?

Answer: Cecily Herondale

Cecily Herondale was Will's younger sister who was nine when he left home. Later, at the age of fifteen, she arrived at the Institute in London to bring Will home. However, as she trained to fight, she fell in love with the Shadowhunter life and decided to stay.

She was a quick learner and natural fighter. She was very similar to her brother in looks and personality. During the last book, she and Gabriel Lightwood fell in love. Eventually, they got married.
10. What was the name of the man who built a clockwork army with plans to destroy the Shadowhunters?

Answer: Axel Mortmain

Axel Mortmain, also known as the Magister, was the antagonist throughout the series. When he was a child, his adopted warlock parents were killed by Shadowhunters for what he believed was an unjust reason. Since then, he had spent his life planning his revenge. Part of his plans were to create Tessa so that she would have the power to Change.

He also used his father's plans to make a clockwork army of automatons infused with the spirit of demons. In the end, though, his plans failed when Tessa Changed into the angel Ithuriel and killed him, thus destroying the demon automatons who were connected to him.
11. This quiet and calm character came to the London Institute after discovering how corrupt his father was. Who was he?

Answer: Gideon Lightwood

Gideon Lightwood was the son of Benedict Lightwood and the older brother of Gabriel. He originally only came to the Institute to help train Tessa and Sophie. Later, after seeing his father's bad lifestyle at a party and learning he had demon pox and was working for Mortmain, Gideon left his father and came to live at the Institute.

He became very loyal to Charlotte and reused to spy on her for the Consul. Gideon and Sophie fell in love during his time at the Institute. When he proposed to her, she accepted and eventually they got married and had children.
12. This character was a warlock who helped the Shadowhunters on many occasions throughout the books. Who was he?

Answer: Magnus Bane

Magnus Bane, who was also an important character in "The Mortal Instruments" series, was a warlock living in London at the time of these books. Throughout the series, he helped the Shadowhunters on multiple occasions. He helped Will to break his curse (though it was fake), helped Henry to create the Portal, and fought with the Shadowhunters at Cadair Idris.
13. What was the name of the Consul who wanted to remove Charlotte from the Institute?

Answer: Josiah Wayland

Josiah Wayland was the Consul throughout the series. Although he was the one who appointed Charlotte as head of the London Institute, he only did so because he thought she was just a weak woman that he could easily control. When that turned out to not be the case, he set out to denounce her.

He asked the Lightwood brothers to spy on her for him, but they were too loyal to her and wrote him fake letters. When Charlotte wrote to him that Mortmain was at Cadair Idris, he refused to believe her or to send help.

In the end, he was decapitated by an automaton when they attacked during a Council meeting.
14. What was the name of the vampire who Tessa Changed into in the first book?

Answer: Camille Belcourt

Camille Belcourt, also seen in "The Mortal Instruments", was a beautiful vampire. At the time of "The Infernal Devices", she was a member of Alexei de Quincey's clan and dating Magnus Bane. She was also an informant of Charlotte's. In "Clockwork Angel", when the Shadowhunters still believed de Quincey was the Magister, she helped them get into his house by allowing Tessa to Change into her.

After betraying de Quincey, Camille went into hiding in Russia before eventually coming back and breaking up with Magnus.
15. This deceitful and careless man worked for the Magister and married Jessamine to use her. Who was he?

Answer: Nathaniel Gray

Nathaniel "Nate" Gray was raised as Tessa's brother, though he was actually her cousin. While reading old pages of his adopted mother's diary, he learned of Mortmain and the Pandemonium Club. He went to London and began to work for Mortmain. He convinced Tessa to come to London only to be kidnapped by the Dark Sisters.

The Shadowhunters rescued Nate from the vampires, but it was part of a plan so that he could spy on the Institute. Soon, his alliance with Mortmain was revealed and he left with him. Nate married Jessamine to use her as a spy.

After Tessa met with Nate once disguised as Jessamine, she set another meeting with him. The Shadowhunters came with her to ambush him, but he was ready for them. In the ensuing fight, Nate was accidentally killed when a giant automaton exploded.
