Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who are the heads of the London Institute?

Answer: Charlotte and Henry Branwell

Although the head is technically Henry, Charlotte runs the Institute most of the time. Other shadowhunters think it is improper to have a woman running the Institute. Theresa and Henry Starkweather are not real characters, they're just a mix of names from the series. Jessamine and Nathaniel Gray aren't really shadowhunters, therefore they can't run the Institute. Lastly, Maryse and Benedict Lightwood are from different time periods so they've never even met.
2. Who is the head of the Pandemonium Club? He is referred to as 'the Magister'.

Answer: Axel Mortmain

Although at first it is believed that de Quincey is the Magister, it is revealed near the end of the first book that it is really Mortmain. Magnus Bane is a warlock who is not often involved with the Pandemonium Club. Finally, William Herondale is a shadowhunter who is investigating to find out who the Magister is. Near the beginning of the series he says: "I've mastered many things in my life. Alas, no one has ever actually referred to me as 'the master,' or 'the magister,' either."
3. Which shadowhunter's ghost protects the Institute after dying on the front steps in "Clockwork Princess"?

Answer: Jessamine Lovelace

Jessamine was coming home to the Institute when some disguised clockwork warriors jumped out and started battling the shadowhunters. Jessamine was caught in the crossfire and died on the front steps. Charlotte Branwell is an important shadowhunter who is alive throughout the series. Cecily Herondale is Will's sister who comes to be trained as a shadowhunter.

She survives the series as well. Lastly, Camille Belcourt is a vampire who comes to the Institute only on rare occasions as an informant. She isn't a shadowhunter.
4. Which character gets Demon Pox and turns into a giant worm in "Clockwork Princess"?

Answer: Benedict Lightwood

Benedict Lightwood is known to have liked demons and Downworlders "more than he should". Demon Pox is a disease that turns you into a demon. It is contracted by a shadowhunter having inappropriate contact with a demon. Gabriel Lightwood is the one who notifies the Institute of his father's condition by coming in and telling his brother that "father's a worm". Nathaniel Gray is Tessa's brother.

He is a mundane and therefore cannot catch Demon Pox. Finally, William Herondale is the only shadowhunter who really knows about Demon Pox. Everyone thinks that he made it up until Benedict Lightwood catches it.
5. What does Jem change his name to after becoming a Silent Brother in "Clockwork Princess"?

Answer: Brother Zachariah

He can't bear to keep a name associated with his past so he changes his name to Brother Zachariah because of the meaning of the name Zachariah. Brother Enoch is the head Silent Brother, not Jem. Lastly, his name can't be Brother James because James was already his name.
6. What is the nickname for the sisters (Mrs Black and Mrs Dark) who kidnap Tessa in "Clockwork Angel"?

Answer: The Dark Sisters

We first learn of their name at the beginning of the series, when Tessa reads Nathaniel's fake note, which says: "I call them the Dark Sisters, Tessie, for obvious reasons, and they seem to find the name agreeable!" The other names are simply names that I thought seemed to fit the Sisters.
7. Who does Will argue with constantly?

Answer: Gabriel Lightwood

He and Gabriel argue constantly. Gabriel thinks that he is just an arrogant fool who jokes about everything. Will hates Gabriel as well, constantly calling him a 'Lightworm'. Will gets along okay with Gideon. James (Jem) Carsairs is the only person that Will seems to care about for much of the series. Finally, Will can't argue with Alexander Lightwood, because they've never met! Alec is from a different time period.
8. What is the name of the clockwork girl who serves the Dark Sisters?

Answer: Miranda

Miranda is the Sisters' maidservant. She is the one who takes Tessa to see the Dark Sisters in the beginning of the series. Jessie is Jessamine Lovelace's nickname. She is a shadowhunter. Isabelle is the first name of a Lightwood girl who lives in a different time period.
9. What is the name of the mundane girl who works at the Institute?

Answer: Sophie Collins

Sophie was employed by a family, but the son was cruel. When he attempted to seduce her, and she denied him, he slashed her across the face with a knife. He said that if he couldn't have her, he would make sure no one else wanted her. He later said that she had tried to seduce him and he had been defending his honor when he slashed her.

She was thrown out onto the street, and there she found Charlotte, who took her in.
10. Who was the warlock who helped Henry invent the Portal (a fact that is mentioned in "Clockwork Princess")?

Answer: Magnus Bane

Although all of the options are warlocks, only Magnus was the one who aided Henry with the magical side of the Portal. When he was at the Institute, he found some notes that Henry had made concerning the idea of the Portal. When asked about it, he said that he couldn't invent it because it required magic that shadowhunters couldn't do. Magnus then offered his assistance on the magical side and, together, they made it.
