Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who mutinied on Edmond and threw him in prison?

Answer: Morcerf, Danglars, and Caderousse

It would be these three who would lock up Edmond.

Morcerf's (real name Fernand Mondega) motive was jealousy and treachery. He coveted Edmond's fiancee Mercedes, and made himself rich off of Edmond's money, bankrupting their employer Max Morrel. Fernand would pay for his crimes because not only is he guilty of coveting, he is guilty of treason, theft, and murder.

Danglars' was Edmond's best friend and second mate on his ship. He was jealous of his captain and made himself rich by stealing from the poor. His motive was greed, and it would also lead to his downfall.

Caderousse started out as a respected tavern owner and became a robber. Caderousse did not care for Edmond's father and he died of starvation, and since Caderousse did not pay the funeral bill Louis got buried in an unmarked grave. Caderousse's motive was envy, but it led him into crime and would lead to his death.
2. When Edmond delivers the letter to Villefort what does he do with it?

Answer: He throws it into the fire and burns it

Villefort is a royalist but has ties to Bonapartism. His father Noirtier, a well known Bonapartist, helped Napoleon escape to Elba during the French Revolution. Villefort knew if he or his father saw the letter the French would hang him as a traitor, so he burned it and forgot about Edmond, thereby condemning him to imprisonment in Château d'If, a notorious Turkish prison off the French coast, without a trial.
3. While Edmond was in jail who did he become friends with?

Answer: Abbé Faria

Abbé Faria (known as the Mad Priest) helped Edmond escape, and told him about his treasure.

While Edmond was in jail he tunneled into Faria's cell, and they became friends. Faria taught Edmond and educated him so when he became the Count he was ready to bring his enemies down.

Faria's health declined while he was in jail and he told Edmond about Monte Cristo and the vast deposits of gold there which he was going to give to Edmond.
4. How does Edmond escape from jail?

Answer: He hides himself in a burial sack and the guards throw him off the cliff.

Abbé Faria dies during the night, and Edmond hides his body. When the guards come in to dispose of the body, Edmond hides in the burial sack, and the guards throw him off the cliff. He swims to a nearby island and is picked up by smugglers and taken to Monte Cristo.
5. Who tells Edmond that Morcerf and Danglars bankrupted their employer?

Answer: Caderousse

Caderousse tells Edmond what happened from the betrayal, to Morcerf coveting Mercedes and the birth of Albert, to Morcerf and Danglars bankrupting their employer, to Edmond's father being buried in an unmarked grave. Edmond then plots his revenge to take these three men out for what they did. Caderousse then becomes a robber and turns to a life of crime. Edmond then gets Morrel and his son Maximilien out of debt, and introduces Max to Valentine Villefort.
6. Where did Edmond meet Albert?

Answer: Rome

Edmond, now as the Count of Monte Cristo, befriends Albert in Rome. Franz and Albert go to the square with Edmond to watch an execution. Hours earlier, Vampa tells Edmond that his contact Peppino is to be sentenced to death by guillotine along with a thief named Andrea Rondolo by mazzatello (which is an execution which involves smashing the victim's head with a sledge hammer or a mace as if they were cattle and then decapitating the condemned with a knife before the body is drawn and quartered). Edmond disguises himself as a priest, goes to the pope and gives him an emerald, and has Peppino pardoned. Andrea is put to death, and Edmond meets with Peppino who tells him the information Edmond needs for his plan. Edmond and Peppino come up with a plan to get Albert kidnapped by bandits, and Edmond frees Albert and both of them buy passage on a ship headed back to Paris.
7. Edmond's first target is Danglars. How did Edmond bring him down?

Answer: He used stock fraud to manipulate the stock market bankrupting Danglars.

After all, Danglars got his fortune illegally. Danglars stole from the poor and he did not pay his bonds on hospitals and orphanages he stole from. Edmond bankrupts Danglars, but he does not tell him his identity yet. Edmond has one more job for Danglars to do before he reveals his true identity, which involves taking out Fernand.
8. Edmond's next target is Caderousse. How does he take him down?

Answer: He frees him from prison and gets Benedetto away from him before both conspire to kill Caderousse for what he's done.

Caderousse and Benedetto are thrown in prison by the French and sentenced to row a gallery. Using the tittle Lord Wilmore; Edmond frees them and tells Benedetto to take on the identity of Andrea Cavalcanti, and make his way back into the Villefort household. Edmond then causes Eugénie to break up with Albert and date her own half-brother. Caderousse threatens to expose Benedetto as a thief, if he does not give Caderousse his money. Caderousse then robs Edmond's house and Edmond, as Abbé Busoni, forces him to surrender. Caderousse then begs Edmond for another chance. Edmond then blackmails Caderousse to write a letter to Danglars exposing Benedetto as an impostor, if Danglars does not share his wealth and give half to his daughter and to Benedetto. Caderousse then leaves the house, and Edmond and Benedetto set a trap for him and Caderousse gets knifed by Benedetto. Edmond then reveals his true identity and Caderousse dies.
9. Now it is time to bring down his first mate Morcerf. Besides coveting Mercedes, mutiny, and throwing Edmond in jail what is Fernand also guilty of?

Answer: Selling Haydee into slavery

Besides coveting Mercedes the day of the betrayal, Fernand also sold Haydée into slavery when he betrayed Ali Tebelen to the Turks, leading to his murder. Haydée and her mother were then sold as slaves, and Haydée's mother died before she was placed on the auction block. Edmond then gets Danglars to publish the story in the newspaper exposing Fernand, and he gets placed on trial where Haydée testifies against him. Albert then challenges Edmond to a duel, and Edmond stops the duel, and apologizes to him. Mercédès and Albert then disown Fernand and he commits suicide after Edmond tells him his identity after the trial.
10. Edmond's final target is Villefort. What did Edmond do before he revealed his true identity?

Answer: He drove Villefort insane.

Villefort is the man who put Edmond in prison on false charges. Although he did not take part in the mutiny, he is the one who handed Edmond over to the jailer without a trial. Edmond then uses two plans which involve Vallefort's children to expose him and drive him insane, but he does not reveal his identity yet. Villefort's house is in turmoil and he needs Edmond's help to get it back in order and save his reputation.
11. For phase one of his plan to bring down Villefort, Edmond needs to expose Heloise as a black widow. On what charge did Edmond bring Heloise to Villefort?

Answer: Poisoning his in-laws and his father

Edmond introduced poison to Héloïse, and she and Édouard poison the Saint-Mérans so Valentine gets her inheritance from them, but Noirtier disinherits her to prevent her marriage to Franz d'Épinay prior Edmond's instructions and because she does not love the guy. Franz d'Épinay learns from Noirtier that his father died in a fair fight which he planned when he challenged him to a duel, and Noirtier reinstates Valentine in his will. Héloïse then poisons Noirtier, but fails when she accidentally kills his servant. Héloïse then poisons Valentine, but Edmond sees this coming and swaps the poison for sleeping pills. Edmond and Noirtier then brings Héloïse to Villefort and charges her of being a black widow and a murderer. Villefort then tells Héloïse to pick her method of execution, hanging or poison. Héloïse chooses poison and kills herself and Édouard.
12. Phase two of Edmond's plan is to tell Villefort about Benedetto. Who is he?

Answer: His son

Villefort slept with Hermine Danglars the night of her engagement to her husband, and he had an illegitimate son. Villefort did not want to confront Danglars, so he buried Benedetto in his garden. Bertuccio dug him up, revived him, and they became Edmond's servants. Edmond tells this to Villefort twenty years later, driving him insane. Edmond then reveals his identity and tells Villefort that he will help his children recover their inheritance and save his reputation.
13. After bankrupting Danglars, Edmond finally reveals his identity to him. What did Edmond do to save Danglars' reputation?

Answer: He gave him his money and his freedom back

Edmond sends his agents after him and uses Peppino as bait to lure Danglars into a trap set by Vampa and Edmond. Danglars gets thrown in prison and Edmond reveals his identity, on one condition: Danglars must pay his debts and dispose of his stocks. Danglars does this and the money is returned to the hospitals and the orphanage; in return, Edmond gives him his money back along with his freedom.
14. Edmond finally reveals his identity to Max, his employer. What does he give him before he leaves?

Answer: Valentine and his fortune

Edmond then revealed his identity to Max, and told him to meet him at Monte Cristo Island on October 5th at 6:00 PM. Edmond then revived Valentine, and brought her to Monte Cristo Island.

He then gave them all his gold, and he performed the ceremony wedding Max to Valentine, and tells them everything that happened.
