Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who is the Seeress who wants to open the Book of Dryjhna?

Answer: Sha'ik

She believes that when she opens the Book, the Whirlwind which starts the Apocalypse will happen. Kalam delivers her the Book. Right as she opens it, someone shoots an arrow into her forehead and she dies.
2. Who do Crokus and Fiddler say that Shadowthrone is?

Answer: Emperor Kellanved

Kellanved is the Emperor who is overthrown by Laseen between the prologue and first chapter of "Gardens of the Moon", the first book of the series. Since Fiddler noticed that a new House appeared in the Deck of Dragons when the Emperor supposedly died, he surmises that Kellanved ascended and became Shadowthrone.
3. What body parts is Heboric missing?

Answer: Hands

He used to be a priest. Partway through the book, after touching one of the giant jade statues in the desert, he gains use of his hands as if they were only invisible.
4. What group of creatures attack Felisin?

Answer: Bloodflies

The others in her group cover themselves in mud to avoid the flies, but Felisin doesn't cover herself enough. They bite her all over and lay eggs inside her mouth. Heboric gives her a tincture that kills the bloodflies, but her face is left scarred.
5. What is the name of the gate that may lead to the Deadhouse in Malaz City?

Answer: Tremorlor

The group, including Fiddler and Apsalar, want to use the gate at Tremorlor to travel to the corresponding Deadhouse in Malaz City. Tremorlor is rumored to be in the desert of Raraku.
6. What occupation does Duiker have?

Answer: Historian

He was once a soldier, but witnesses and records events now as an Imperial Historian. He does fight in a battle midway through the novel and decides not to learn dead soldiers' names anymore because there is nothing glorious about dying. He thinks it's terrible that the dead are revered while the living are ignored and forgotten.
7. At sea, Kalam summons Quick Ben to do what?

Answer: Find out if something is wrong on the ship

Kalam had planned to wait until he was at Empress Laseen's palace before calling on Ben's skills, as he can call Ben only once. However, he changes his mind and wants to find out if there's an enchantment on the ship.
8. What do the mosaic tiles inside the warren leading to Deadhouse represent?

Answer: Azath Houses

It's a map of all the Azath houses in all the lands of the world. The tiles stretch for many miles, and just one small tile represents the Malaz lands. The group keep walking until they reach the place they're traveling to, where they fall through the tiles. Because different members are going to different places, they fall through different sets of tiles.
9. Does Kalam kill Empress Laseen?

Answer: No

Laseen isn't physically present, only her voice, which echoes throughout the room where Kalam searches for her. He allows her to make her case that he shouldn't kill her. After she gives reasons for her actions, such as killing the past Emperor for the good of the entire Malazan Empire, Kalam decides not to kill her and leaves. Laseen then declares that, since she could reason with him, he's no longer a threat.
10. What does Sha'ik name the orphan?

Answer: Felisin

The first Sha'ik dies early in the book. Felisin is renamed Sha'ik and is considered the Seeress reborn. As Sha'ik, she adopts an orphan and names her Felisin, a name full of promise.
