A Tiste Edur, Scara Bandaris is also a Soletaken Eleint, meaning that he can turn into a dragon. He got the name Bloodeye after a battle where blood stained his eyes. The Sengars come across his skeleton while on their quest.

If they cross the canal carrying the number of docks corresponding to their crime, they get to go free. Ublala gets across by walking along the bottom. He has four lungs, so he can make it without drowning. There's a whole gambling ring around it, based on how many strokes a person will make before sinking, who'll flail around, or who will slip under and resurface. Few bet on a criminal surviving, but Gerun makes a lot of money on Ublala this way.

Answer: She was cursed.

She thinks swimming the canal will be easy for her. Unfortunately, she gets caught underwater by a fish, and having been cursed by someone she stole from to never die, she gets stuck at a strange spot between living and dead. She doesn't decay, but she doesn't look alive either.

Answer: Holds

The Letherii and Tiste races of this book have their own version of the Deck of Dragons called the Tiles. Feather Witch casts them in a similar manner to the way characters deal the cards in other "Malazan" books. Hold names include the Ice Hold, the Empty Hold, and the Dragon Hold, while the Unaligned tiles are called Fulcra.

Answer: A sword

They are not told what the gift is before the quest. They aren't supposed to touch it with their bare skin. Rhulad does, and when he dies, the others can't pry his fingers off it.

The body is covered in wax and coins. Rhulad is noble-born and dies in battle, so he gets gold coins. Others get copper coins. Slaves to the Letherii think the ritual is a waste of coins, and some want to rob the barrow for the gold.

Answer: The Crippled God

The Crippled God sends Rhulad back to the living to serve him. Unfortunately, Rhulad's body is being prepared for burial. Udinaas is half-finished covering him, and Rhulad feels the burn of hot wax and coins. Some coins fall off, but most of them stick to him.

The Jheck turn into wolves to try to stop the Sengars from taking Mosag's gift, which they want for themselves. The Soletaken can turn into animals. Tiste Andii are also Soletaken, their other form being dragons.

Answer: His fiancee

Fear knows he has no choice if he wants to stay in Rhulad's good side, so he agrees that Mayen can marry Rhulad and become Empress. She knows that she and Fear have no say in the matter and takes Rhulad's hand, and everyone in the hall can see how horrified she is. Rhulad later regrets marrying her.
