A major theme of the series is compassion. Like Tavore, Gesler now has compassion for Kaminsod, who has caused much of the suffering throughout the series, but has been literally ripped apart for thousands of years. He was torn apart when he arrived in the Malazan world from his own world; it is wrong for him to remain among the Malazans. Though Kaminsod may be destroyed when he returns to his world, he would rather return than remain how he is. The Crippled God wants to write a "Book of the Fallen" to commemorate those who died to defend him. Back in "Dust of Dreams", Badalle wanted to do this. So, the series title "Book of the Fallen" refers not only to the dead, but the person who wants to write (and possibly writes?) it, the Fallen God, Kaminsod.

Kaminsod is not of the Malazan world and was torn apart many thousands of years ago when he arrived. Supposedly, Kaminsod is a reference to both "Malazan" authors; "Sod" refers to Erikson and "Cam" refers to Ian Esslemont, who wrote the series "Novels of the Malazan Empire". His works include "Return of the Crimson Guard", "Stonewielder", and "Assail".

However, Kruppe often tells the story in his own style, in a lighter, somewhat amused tone distinct from other sections; chapters often begin and end with commentary from him. Kruppe never uses first-person pronouns when he talks (a trait I personally find annoying), so the sections aren't in first person. None of the previous "Malazan" books employed this technique.

It may well be the latter--an unknown woman appears to her after this engagement, then vanishes in an instant.

Blood-oil may be related to otataral dust, as both negate magic.

When the Tenescowri get to Capustan, they kill and eat its prince, Jelarkan. Their leader Anaster is quick to tell Itkovian that they killed Jelarkan first, because they're not so cruel as to cook someone alive. Because of rampant cannibalism, peasant starvation, and a few other cruel practices, Rake thinks that the Pannion Domin is ultimately unsustainable. I'm inclined to agree with him.

Oakhallow is a character from Elizabeth Moon's "The Deed of Paksenarrion" trilogy, and Fireheart is from Erin Hunter's "Warriors" series.

Fener welcomes his death, as it's noted in the series that while humans don't tire of war, gods do. Also, in "Reaper's Gale", he says that he knows one day, he'll be summoned to a battle where he will die. Where others will bathe in his blood... Foreshadowing: in "House of Chains", Karsa encounters an altar to Fener and breaks the idol of the boar god. To kill Fener in this book, he breaks Fener's tusk with his stone sword.

His heart is a rock-hard thing chained to an altar in Kolanse. It gives the Assail energy. They wish to kill the humans, whom they consider invaders and interlopers in their world. Way back in "House of Chains", the Teblor freed an Assail, who escaped after telling Karsa he would have a part to play in changing the world. That Assail was Calm, and she has returned to help her fellow Assail.

It is a water-etched dagger. Bugg (aka Mael) instructs her to use it only when blood is needed. We don't find out why she blanches when given the gift, and it isn't used in this book.

"Goldenhand" is a book in the "Old Kingdom" series.

Otataral ore prevents and negates magic. The otataral doesn't kill her, though--it merely prevents her from escaping into a warren when Degaroth come and tear her apart. Interestingly, in her dying thoughts, Poliel, Mistress of Pestilence, reveals that she wanted to heal Burn, and spreading disease that killed humans was her way of doing that.

He stops talking and lives like a dog, even running with them.
