Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. From whose perspective is much of "Toll the Hounds" told?

Answer: Kruppe

The book is third-person omniscient, following the actions and thoughts of dozens of characters. However, Kruppe often tells the story in his own style, in a lighter, somewhat amused tone distinct from other sections; chapters often begin and end with commentary from him. Kruppe never uses first-person pronouns when he talks (a trait I personally find annoying), so the sections aren't in first person. None of the previous "Malazan" books employed this technique.
2. What type of school has Stonny set up in Darujhistan?

Answer: Dueling

She doesn't have much heart for it, but it makes her money. At the school, students duel each other to learn actual fighting instead of learning tricks like poking swordpoints through rings because tricks, while they look flashy, won't win a duel, which Murillio learned the hard way with a prized student who died during his first duel.
3. Harllo is sold as a slave and sent to work where?

Answer: A mine

Chalice's husband Gorlas owns the mines where Harllo is enslaved. Gorlas seems to get a kick out of enslaving children, as when Murillio comes to buy Harllo's freedom, Gorlas instead contrives to duel Murillio and kills him. Harllo was named after his mother Stonny's friend.

She has little affection for him because he is a child of rape (which occurs in "Memories of Ice"), but when he escapes and returns, she finally allows herself to love him.
4. While enslaved, Harllo meets what creature?

Answer: T'lan Imass

Dev'ad Anan had been trapped there for millennia. Harllo provides the Imass with rudimentary legs so the creature can leave the mines. Anan isn't seen again in this book.

Badgermoles come from the series "Avatar: The Last Airbender". They are blind creatures that manipulate earth. Should Harllo have run into one of them, he would have escaped the mines easily.
5. Which Malazans are killed during an assassination in "Toll the Hounds"?

Answer: Bluepearl and Mallet

The Assassin's Guild in Darujhistan attacks K'rul's Belfry, a bar where several retired Bridgeburners live. The survivors make it a mission to find out who attacked them and why.
6. What item does Challice cherish and compare her innocence to?

Answer: A moon in a globe

She thinks she was once as pure and innocent as this moon, but like the moon, she's also trapped within her own prison. When she commits suicide, it breaks with her, and both are free, in a manner of speaking.
7. What happens to Gorlas in "Toll the Hounds"?

Answer: Cutter kills him.

Cutter kills the unfeeling husband of a woman he once loved and has had an affair with. Cutter doesn't intend to take up with her because he senses she's only using him to combat her own loneliness. As well, he still longs for Apsalar.
8. What message does Picker give Karsa in Darujhistan?

Answer: To kill a god

Picker had been trapped in her mind after contacting Ganoes Paran and becomes mentally free by getting a message from Toc. She thought Karsa would be frightened at his task to kill a god, but he isn't phased at all and merely inquires as to which one.
9. What happens when Anomander Rake meets Hood in Darujhistan?

Answer: Anomander kills Hood.

Not only that, he beheads him with the sword Dragnipur, which is normally a fate worse than death, as it binds its dead to a nightmare wagon that never stops. This method of death is part of Hood's gambit, and he gives up being the Lord of Death. I seriously never expected the Lord of Death to die.
10. In "Toll the Hounds", whose death frees Mother Dark?

Answer: Anomander Rake

I must admit, I didn't see his death coming either. Rake's death brings the Warren of Darkness within Dragnipur to Black Coral and frees Mother Dark. He had previously had a falling out with Mother Dark, and his sacrifice heals the rift.
