Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The villain in which Discworld novel attempts to use a dragon to take over Ankh-Morpork, only to have the strategy backfire when the dragon becomes king?

Answer: Guards! Guards!

This is the eighth Discworld book to be published, but the first in the series about the Watch. Other books based on Ankh-Morpork's City Watch are "Men At Arms," "Feet of Clay," "Jingo," and others. The plot of "Guards! Guards!" figures prominently in the first computer game inspired by the Discworld series.
2. A farmer named Lezek takes his son, who "thinks too much," according to Dad, to the fair to find a career. The boy becomes an apprentice to Death, allowing the latter to take a holiday, but oversteps his bounds. Which Discworld novel is this?

Answer: Mort

On Discworld, when Death speaks, it is all in capital letters. Mort gets into trouble by trying to save Death's granddaughter from her own mortality. In a 2003 BBC poll, "Mort" was voted the most popular of the Discworld series.
3. Rincewind gets mistaken for a demon and ends up in Hell. He also goes back in time to the creation of Discworld as well as taking part in the defeat of Tsort and the destruction of the Tezumen god Quetzovercoatl. Pick the name of this novel.

Answer: Eric

Originally the title showed "Faust," which was crossed out, and then the name "Eric." Pratchett parodies the Faustian legend, taking shots at Dante's "Inferno," the Trojan War, and the Aztec god Quetzalcoatl. The title character is a 13-year-old demonologist named Eric Thursley.
4. Victor Tugelbend, "Ginger" Withel, and Gaspode the Wonder Dog must save Discworld from "Things" escaping from the Dungeon Dimensions through a hole under the beach near Holy Wood. Which Discworld novel is this?

Answer: Moving Pictures

"Moving Pictures" is one of the "stand alone" Discworld novels, as opposed to the four subseries groups featuring characters like Rincewind, the Witches, Death, and the Watch.
5. In this first Discworld novel, Rincewind serves as a guide for Twoflower, a tourist from the Agatean Empire, and his many-legged luggage. Rincewind and Twoflower meet Hrun the Barbarian, visit Wyrmberg, and are launched off the Discworld with a water troll. Name the novel.

Answer: The Colour of Magic

Most critics hold later books, such as "Guards! Guards!," "Mort," and "Equal Rites" in much higher esteem than "The Color of Magic." You really need to read the second Discworld novel, "The Light Fantastic" along with the first novel to get a good reflection of the Discworld experience.
6. The strange Mr. Nutt and the street urchin Trev Likely team up with the Librarian to introduce football to the wizarding world of Ankh-Morpork and adapt the old-school "foot-the-ball" of the city's masses into a modern form. Which Discworld novel is this?

Answer: Unseen Academicals

"Unseen Academicals" is the 37th book of the Discworld series and the first to be published since Pratchett's 2007 announcement that he is suffering from a form of Alzheimer's Disease.
7. In this Discworld novel, whose title is taken from a poem by John Milton, Rincewind must save the flat planet from a sinister red star with eight moons. What is the name of this book, in which Rincewind receives The Luggage as a farewell gift from Twoflower?

Answer: The Light Fantastic

"The Light Fantastic" follows directly on the heels of the first Discworld novel, "The Colour of Magic," and has received much better reviews than its predecessor.
8. When Death is forced to retire and become a hired hand named Bill Door, the built-up life force causes all sorts of problems on Discworld, including sentient shopping carts and the sudden appearance of ubiquitous snow-globes. What is the name of this eleventh Discworld novel by Terry Pratchett?

Answer: Reaper Man

It was an adjustment for me to think "shopping carts" when reading "trolleys." Ah, yes, as the saying went, "the English and Americans are two people separated by a common language." This statement, in a few variations, is attributed to either George Bernard Shaw or Oscar Wilde. There seems to be no consensus on which.
9. Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg invite themselves along when Magrat Garlick becomes a fairy godmother who needs to prevent a "fairy tale ending" in far-away Genua. Which Discworld novel brings into focus the morality of running other people's lives?

Answer: Witches Abroad

In "Witches Abroad," Desiderata Hollow, who was not only a witch, but also a Fairy Godmother, bequeaths Magrat her wand, and assigns the young witch the job of saving a girl from a forced marriage. If you google "Desiderata," you will find tons of links related to the poem, but Desiderata was also a girl's name back in the day. One famous Desiderata was sent by her father, Lombard king Desiderius, to be a bride for the Frank ruler Charlemagne.

However, Charles sent her back, damaging relations between the Franks and Lombards for a long time.
10. Prince Teppic leaves his assassin training in Ankh-Morpork to return to his home kingdom of Djelibeybi when his father dies. But his ascension is not smooth and he escapes with the handmaiden Ptraci to Ephebe before order is returned. Which Discworld novel features all of Djelibeybi's dead rulers coming back to life?

Answer: Pyramids

"Pyramids" won the British Fantasy Award for Best Novel in 1999. It is a "stand alone" Discworld novel, meaning it does not fit into one of the four series whose main character is either Rincewind, the Witches, Death, or the Watch of Ankh-Morpork.
