Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. During her search for Uncle Fred, Stephanie was given this interesting clue by her Aunt Mabel.

Answer: pictures of a dismembered corpse

The pictures were inside Fred's desk. They couldn't have been there too long, as Mabel went into the desk every so often if she needed something. Stephanie passed the pics to Joe, but kept her own color copies. She searched them over and over for clues.
2. Stephanie wasn't the only person searching for Uncle Fred. A man calling himself "Bunchy" entered the picture and identified himself as what?

Answer: Fred's bookie

Bunchy was a highly determined man, and Stephanie had a hard time conducting her search without him following her. And, while Steph considered that HE may be the butcher of the corpse, she didn't get a harsh or violent vibe off of him in general. He told Stephanie that Fred owed him money, not enough to make a man run away, but enough so that Bunchy wanted it back.

A bit later Steph discovered that Fred had inquired on a personal loan the day his disappeared, and she wondered if it was to pay Bunchy.

She considered that Bunchy wasn't a bookie, as no one in town knew of him, and that he could be a blackmailer. Fred had issues with the local waste management company, and was also on his way to straighten them out when he disappeared. His car had been found abandoned and locked, dry cleaning in back, and no sign of a struggle at all.
3. She needed more money. FTAs had temporarily dried up for Plum Bail Bonds, so Steph asked Ranger to hire her in a different capacity. What happened to her on her first night of "security" without Ranger?

Answer: the place blew up

This answer was almost a no-brainer, as everything blows up in her world! She went with Ranger and his team to "clean" a unit of an apartment complex in Sloane. When Joe Morelli found out, it worried him instantly and he warned her off the task. She needed money and went ahead with her new job.

The team went in and cleared the place of drug abusers. They, save one, were taken to a drug rehab and dropped off. The remaining one was tossed from a window by Tank, onto the balcony. Steph thought he hit the street from three floors up, as did Tank, but the druggie got lucky- for that night.

When Steph and Tank were left to guard the unit alone, he showed up again with a bomb strapped to his body. Steph tried to dissuade him from getting riled up, but when he saw the entire contents of the place had been removed, he lost it.

He fired his gun at one of the senior citizens that lived there, and like any self-respecting granny of the Burg, she fired back before Steph could stop her. Her shot caused the druggie to explode. Steph couldn't hear well when she woke up to Joe's face staring down at her, but she wasn't otherwise injured. Tank was also OK; the druggie had fired a round into his Kevlar vest and rendered him temporarily out of sorts.
4. Was former boxer Benito Ramirez released from jail?

Answer: Yes

He came to her apartment before Steph even found out about it from Joe, and she recognized his description from one of her neighbors. Then, as he had once before, he began calling and leaving messages on her answering machine. The first ones were hangs ups, then heavy breathing, then he spoke, exactly like he had in book one. Steph warned Lula about his as well, but she told Stephanie to worry more about herself. Benito had already inflicted his damage on Lula, but to hurt Stephanie he was capable of anything.
5. What happened to Stephanie after she picked up the young sheik from the airport?

Answer: all of these

Ranger sent her to pick the young man up and deliver him to the family he was visiting. He came off of the plane looking like your average American slacker; jeans too big, t-shirt with a red flannel over it, and very expensive athletic shoes. He offered to have sex with her right off, then flashed her in the Lincoln she was driving, and finally coerced her to stop for a soft drink.

She, as usual, didn't think this through, and actually GOT OUT of the vehicle to purchase his order for him! She could have driven through the drive through window.

As soon as she was far enough away, he hopped into the driver's seat and took off. He'd already offered her up to $5000 to drive the car, and she had refused. Now, he was off and ruining her job for Ranger. Steph, Steph!
6. Stephanie caught an FTA named Randy Briggs. He was a "little person" who worked with computers. What happened after Steph finally caught him?

Answer: Both of these

Stephanie had tried several times to bring in Randy for Vinnie. Randy may have been small, but he was super smart and wily. She and Lula almost had him, but he tricked them into following him outside. Then he returned home and locked them out. Finally, Steph became especially inspired when Lula suggested Vinnie may turn Randy over to Joyce to bring in.

She forced her way into the man's place, a mighty struggle ensued and the neighbors called the cops. When they arrived, they took Randy into custody.

When he got out again, Vinnie told him that he could stay at Stephanie's place until his was repaired. Stephanie was not pleased at all, but felt she had no choice but to comply. He turned out to be helpful and got on well with Grandma Mazur.
7. Ranger gave Stephanie a brand new black Porsche to use as a company vehicle.

Answer: True

He brought her the car while she was talking to Bunchy. He placed a protective hand on her neck, almost as though he was marking territory. Things had begun to heat up between them, making life all the more complicated for Stephanie. They both concurred Bunchy was in law enforcement of some kind, and she suspected he was a Federal agent.

She told Ranger that he'd most likely put a tracking device on her Buick, and then Ranger produced the keys to her new company car. He told her that it wasn't stolen, but that didn't meant that it was the truth.

The first person she told of her new present was her best pal Mary Lou. She admitted to Mary Lou that she and Ranger were flirting around the idea of flirting with each other, my words, not Janet Evanovich's writing.
8. After the Porsche was blown up, Ranger brought Stephanie another black company car. What happened to the new BMW?

Answer: it was stolen in less than 24 hours

Sure enough, Stephanie lost another car! The old Buick seemed to be her only impervious vehicle. She and Lula had gone to retrieve an FTA in a bad part of town. It hadn't taken too long to haul in the drunken wife beater, but the car had been stolen in that time.

The thieves left behind the license plates and the silver VIN strip. VIN stands for vehicle identification number. Stephanie decided she was done taking cars from Ranger, who as usual was not too concerned for the vehicle in question. When she delivered the news to him, she started crying a little in frustration.

He kissed her, she kissed back, and he told her that if a liaison had been a good idea between them, he'd have already been in her bed. This left her with more mixed emotions, way more excitement, and a lot to think about.
9. After many deaths had occurred, Allen Shempsky revealed himself to be the killer.

Answer: True

Stephanie came home to find him in her bedroom. He held her at gunpoint and said that he had Randy Briggs bound in the closet. Allen admitted to all the murders; Fred, Larry Lipinski, Laura Lipinski (woman in the garbage bags), Mark Stemper, and Martha Deeter at the garbage company.

He told Steph he was going to kill her as well, and mostly like Randy. In a wild and delightful twist of fate, Benito Ramirez saved her life. It seemed he'd finally had enough fun with her. After one real attempt to hurt her that failed, he was back to finish the job.

He made noise on the balcony, startling Allen. Allen fired at the window and Stephanie ran away. His bullet killed Ramirez, but then he disappeared. And, in true Plum format, Stephanie was able to catch the man in the airport. Ranger assigned her to take the spoiled sheik to catch his plane, and Randy called with the info that he'd hacked into Allen's computer.

He knew that Allen had a plane ticket for that very moment. Steph and Grandma were in the car escorting the sheik when they spotted his tan Taurus on the Jersey Turnpike.

A chase ensued after they exited for the airport, and the sheik was so impressed with Stephanie's vengeance role that he helped her capture Allen.
10. At the very end of the book, Stephanie was making a choice about which man she wanted to spend the night with. She put Joe and Ranger's names into a bowl, closed her eyes, and withdrew one. Did we ever find out her choice before the book ended?

Answer: No

She showed the result to Rex, and admitted to herself that he may not be her "forever guy", but he was good for right now. She called him up, before she chickened out, and told him she wanted his opinion on a dress. It was the sexy black dress she initially intended to wear to Julie Morelli's wedding, but decided against for Joe Morelli related reasons.

When she answered the door, he commented on the dress and then told her to take it off. We never knew for sure, but I was so hoping for Ranger.
