Sean then searched Amelia's room and found food wrappers from when she would binge eat and Ziploc bags from when she would throw up in public.

Marin and Juliet spoke for a short while. At the end of their conversation, Juliet told Marin not to contact her again and that some babies should not be born. Later, Marin drove to Juliet's house and asked her why she had put her up for adoption. Juliet then told her that when she was sixteen, she was raped, and Marin was the product of it.

After many days of trial, the jury found in favor of Charlotte, even though both Sean and Amelia testified for the defense. Amelia testified that she heard a conversation between Charlotte and Willow, where her mother told her sister she loves her and that she would not have gotten an abortion. The entire novel was written as if it was being told to Willow. The narrator's would refer to her as "you". Less than a year after the lawsuit ended, Willow went outside in the winter. She had always been fascinated with the iced over pond that Amelia would skate on.

She crawled out onto the ice, and it cracked under her. As she drowned she knew that this time, she wouldn't be the one to break. When they buried her, Charlotte placed the check for the eight million dollars in the casket with her.
