Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I grew up an orphan in a walled city run by the priestess of Antaris until a stranger called Darrow came. Then I joined him and others to travel the world finding different forms of magic. Where am I from?

Answer: "Chanters of Tremaris"

This character, Calwyn, is from the fantastic "Chanters of Tremaris" trilogy, written by Kate Constable. This fantasy series consists of "Singer of All Songs", "The Waterless Sea" and "The Tenth Power". I highly recommend reading them. "Ranger's Apprentice" and "Inheritance" are both other fantasy series, and "Clovermead" is also a fantasy book.
2. I'm a Year 12 student in Australia who is forced to move to the mining town of Kapunda. But things don't look so bad after I find myself caught up in solving the mysteries surrounding one of my ancestors who also lived there. Which book am I from?

Answer: "Zenna Dare"

Jenefer is from the book "Zenna Dare" by Roseanne Hawke. She finds documents and belongings of her triple-great grandmother in the old family home, and is compelled to find more. In doing so, she finds some well buried family secrets, and even family members in Cornwall. An excellent read, I promise you! "Borderland" and "A Kiss in Every Wave" are also by the same author and worth checking out. "Hannah's Winter" is by Keiren Meehan and set in Japan.
3. Going into culture-shock, I'm an Australian girl raised in Pakistan, who has trouble coming back to an Australia I barely remember. Then, just after I start to get it together, I'm kidnapped into Afghanistan while on a holiday back to Pakistan. Which book am I from? (Hint: used to be two separate books, "Re-Entry" and "Jihad").

Answer: "Borderland"

Jaime Sullivan is from "Borderland" by Roseanne Hawke (again!). It's actually a bind up of three books: "Re-Entry", "Jihad" and "Cameleer", the last of which was never released by itself. Seriously, this is one of the best books you'll read when it comes to culture shock and loss (Jasper, another character in the story has to deal with his father's death, and that of one of the other main characters, in "Jihad", and Blake with his mother's death in "Cameleer"). "Hannah's Winter" is by Keiren Meehan, "Pagan's Daughter" is by Catherine Jinks, and "Dark Wind Blowing" is by the awesome Jackie French.
4. I was raised as an orphan in Castle Redmont of Kingdom Aruluen, and I never knew who my parents were. When I was fifteen, I became a pupil of the mysterious Halt and ended up fighting creatures such as Kalkara and Wargals. Which series am I from?

Answer: "Ranger's Apprentice"

We're talking about Will of the "Ranger's Apprentice" series by John Flanagan. He never knew his parents' last name, but after the events of "Oakleaf Bearers", he became known as Will Treaty. If you like fantasy with a vaguely historical aspect to it, you'll like this series. Start with "Ruins of Gorlan" first though!
The only other series by an Australian author was "Rowan of Rin" by Emily Rodda. "Inheritance" and "Protector of the Small" are both by Americans, Christopher Paolini and Tamora Pierce respectively.
5. I grew up as a blacksmith's son in the capital of my country, which is ruled by a malevolent shadow. I set off on a quest to restore a magical belt with a friend of my parents. Along the way we find another friend to travel with and battle many monsters to complete the belt and rid their land of evil. Which series am I from?

Answer: "Deltora Quest"

Lief of Del is the character, so it must be Emily Rodda's "Deltora Quest" we're talking about! His travelling companions are Barda, his parents' friend, and Jasmine, the wild girl who rescued them in the Forests of Silence. They are fighting the Shadowlord and his minions, who have held Deltora in their grasp since the destruction of the magical belt of Deltora.

There are eight short books in the series, as well as another two series afterwards. "Rowan of Rin" is also by the same author. "Chanters of Tremaris" is by Kate Constable, and "Ranger's Apprentice" is by John Flanagan.
6. I think I'm pretty average, but I live next door to the class loner, but when he creates a scene in class after being pushed by the other kids by smashing a vial which he claims is full of a virus, I start to worry that some of those tall stories were true. Especially when classmates start to get sick around me. Which book am I from?

Answer: "Dark Wind Blowing"

Mike from "Dark Wind Blowing" is who we're talking about here. This book (as well as all the others listed) is by the great Australian author, Jackie French. A somewhat darker turn from her usual, but a great suspenseful book.
7. I'm the only child of an American shipping magnate who's just died. On the way to Brisbane via the Coral Sea, I witness a pirate attack which turns my life upside down. I then turn vigilante, using my new sub and close knit crew to take on modern pirates (and eventually whalers, too). Which trilogy am I from?

Answer: "Thunderfish"

Kira Beaumont is the central character of the "Thunderfish" trilogy by Queensland writer Simon Higgins. The books are "Thunderfish", "Under No Flag" and "In The Jaws Of The Sea". "Thunderfish" is the name of the sub featured in this trilogy set in the future. Higgins' stong environmental views regarding the ocean come out particularly in the last two books of the series.

A seriously overlooked trilogy, I suggest you try to get hold of it. Higgins also wrote "Dream Web Files" using his time as a police officer as inspiration. "Borderland" was written by Roseanne Hawke and "Pirates!" is written by British author Celia Rees.
8. I am an Australian teenager who was camping in a deserted area of bush with a group of friends when a foreign force invades Australia. In the following months, we wage guerilla warfare on these invaders. We suffer many hardships and losses, knowing that if we are caught, it's not just our own lives on the line, but quite possibly that of our captive families as well. Which bestseller series am I from?

Answer: "Tomorrow, When the War Began"

Ellie Linton is of the "Tomorrow" series by John Marsden. This one of the best known series in Australian literature for young adults. This series is an absolute must read. It doesn't gloss over the ugly aspects; it's honest, almost disturbingly so. The series of seven books is told from Ellie's perspective as they fight. "The Ellie Chronicles" are a continuation of the series after the war, as Ellie still has to battle many demons. "Borderland" is by Roseanne Hawke and "Thunderfish" by Simon Higgins.
9. I'm dragged to Japan with my mother, who then dumps me on old friends of hers. I soon become embroiled in a mystery involving a samurai suit of armour that has smoke pouring from it, and a little ghost that likes thowing doughnuts! Which book do I belong to?

Answer: "Hannah's Winter"

Hannah is from "Hannah's Winter" by Keiren Meehan. It is a great read, steeped with Japanese culture and history which makes for interesting and informative reading. "Daughter of the Regiment" is by Jackie French, "Ranger's Apprentice" series by John Flanagan, and "Protector of the Small" is by American author Tamora Pierce.
10. I'm the 'plain' one in my family. My brother Peter is athletic and my little sister is a graceful gymnast. We are kidnapped and taken to a place supposedly on another world to join a group of performers called the Peb. I'm no performer, but as I'm written off as a 'pet' to an alien, I figure out the horrible truth behind it all. Which 1995 book am I from?

Answer: "Galax Arena"

Joella is the character here from "Galax Arena" by Gillian Rubinstein. A very chilling but compelling read. It deals with the issues of kidnap, and natural lifespans, amoung other things. I highly recommend it, along with it's sequel, "Terra Farma". "Space Demons" was also written by Gillian Rubinstein. "Other Side of Dawn" is the final book in the "Tomorrow" series by John Marsden.
