Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In T.A. 861, quarrels among the sons of the eighth king of Arnor became so great that the kingdom was divided into three portions. Which one of the following was not one of the three realms that arose from this partitioning?

Answer: Rhovanion

Arthedain, Rhudaur, and Cardolan were the names of the three realms that resulted from the break-up of the kingdom of Arnor. Rhovanion was the name given to a section of the Wilderland, located to the east of the Misty Mountains.
2. In T.A. 1409, the Witch King of Angmar struck the weakened realms of the Dunedain in the North, overrunning Rhudaur and destroying the outpost on this famous height.

Answer: Amon Sul

Amon Sul, also known as "Weathertop," was located at the juncture of the realms of Arthedain, Cardolan, and Rhudaur, and was destroyed by the forces of Angmar. Amon Hen and Amon Lhaw were hills located on either side of Tol Brandir, at the southern end of Nen Hithoel, where the Fellowship of the Ring was broken during the War of the Ring. Amon Din was located far to the south, near Minas Tirith.
3. After T.A. 1248, the kingdom of Gondor attacked the armies and encampments of the Easterlings east of the Anduin River, and afterwards Gondor sculpted the _______ as a warning to enemies entering the realm from that direction.

Answer: Argonath

As a further buffer against the enemies to the east, Gondor strengthened its friendship with the Northmen of Rhovanion. The twentieth king of Gondor even wed a princess from Rhovanion, an act which led to civil war within Gondor.
4. Castamir the Usurper ruled the kingdom of Gondor from Osgiliath until the rightful king, Eldamir, marched south and retook the throne. However, many men loyal to Castamir were able to escape, and their descendants eventually used the seaport of ____ to trouble Gondor from the south.

Answer: Umbar

Castamir's men initially retreated to Pelargir, and then became the Corsairs of Umbar. Dol Amroth was, of course, the stronghold of Prince Imrahil during the War of the Ring, while Mithlond is better known as "The Grey Havens."
5. After the Great Plague of T.A. 1636-1637, only the realm of Arthedain remained in the north. Just three centuries later, this capital city of Arthedain finally fell to the forces of Angmar.

Answer: Fornost

Massive reinforcements from Gondor finally arrived during T.A. 1975, and defeated the forces of Angmar that had marched west from the ruined capital city of Fornost. However, the last kingdom of men in the North was no more, and the remaining survivors became the Rangers of the North.
6. After escaping from the destruction of his armies in the north, the Witch King of Angmar returned to Mordor and readied a force that attacked Minas Ithil ("Tower of the Moon") in T.A. 2000. This fortress was finally taken 2 years later, and was renamed ____ ____, "Tower of Sorcery."

Answer: Minas Morgul

Minas Morgul would become the new abode of the Witch King until the War of the Ring. Minas Anor, "Tower of the Sun," would be renamed Minas Tirith, "Tower of Guard." And Barad-dur, of course, is Sauron's Mordor redoubt that would be rebuilt just before the War of the Ring.

Answer: The Morannon (Black Gate)

The Wainriders and their allies attacked to the north and south of the mountains bordering Mordor. This final defeat of the Wainriders was thus know as "The Battle of the Camp."
8. The Balchoth invaded Gondor in T.A. 2510, crossing the Anduin in rafts and meeting little resistance in the sparsely-populated plains of Calenardhon. Answer: Gollum

Smeagol/Gollum found the One Ring after it was lost in the disaster at the Gladden Fields, when King Isildur was killed by a band of orcs.
