Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. According to the men of the Mark, what does Orthanc mean?

Answer: Cunning Mind

Mount Fang is the elvish translation of Orthanc.
2. What is the name of Eomer's Horse?

Answer: Firefoot

The men of the Rohan are praised for their horsemanship. Each rider takes very dear care of his steed.
3. In the Golden Hall at Edoras there is a banner that hangs, depicting Eorl the Young riding into what battle?

Answer: The Battle of Celebrant

Aragorn exclaims upon seeing the banner "Behold Eorl the Young! Thus he rode out of the North to the Battle of Celebrant."
4. What did Wormtongue name Gandalf upon their meeting in the Golden Hall?

Answer: Lathspell

The traitor Wormtongue speaks for the weakened Theoden King when Gandalf and his company arrive in the Golden Hall, "Why indeed should we welcome you, Master Stormcrow? Lathspell I name, ill-news; and ill news is an ill guest they say."
5. Who arrives with the dawn to help save the day during the battle of Helms Deep?

Answer: Erkenbrand

According to Peter Jackson and his theatrical version of the story it is Gandalf who comes with Eomer and his troops to aid the victory at Helm Deep. In Tolkien's version, Eomer was at the battle the entire time and it is Erkenbrand whom arrives with his much needed troops to help save the day at Helms Deep. I prefer Tolkiens version of events, don't you?
6. Whom first wrought the Blade that was Broken?

Answer: Telchar

Aragorn speaks of this when Hama asks him to surrender his weapon before entering the Golden Hall at Edoras. He states "In this elvish sheath dwells the Blade that was Broken and has been made again. Telchar first wrought it in the deeps of time. Death shall come to any man that draws Elendil's sword save Elendil's heir."
7. An Ent by the name of Quickbeam laments about the slaughter of a beautiful species of tree from his homeland. What is its name?

Answer: Rowan

Quickbeam, the hastiest of the Ents, makes up his mind rather quickly about whether or not to go to war against Saruman. He tells Merry and Pippin a few stories about his homeland and the Rowan trees that were planted when he was just an Enting.
8. The place where Treebeard and the other Ents gather to hold Entmoot has a name in the tongues of men? By what name do they call it?

Answer: Derndingle

Laurelindorenan is the old name for the woods of Lothlorien. Fangorn explains in many of his long speeches the old terms for things to his two new "hasty" hobbit friends Merry and Pippin. Treebeard is by far one of my favorite characters from the books.
9. While in Ithilien Sam and Frodo run into Faramir, a Captain of Gondor. During a long conversation about their adventures Sam lapses into a description of the Lady Galadriel. How does Faramir respond to this description?

Answer: He calls the Lady "perilously fair"

Sam and his tendency to say too much get him into trouble when he begins to speak about Boromir's travels in Lothlorien and his envolvement with the ring. Poor Sam! He always means so well!
10. Faramir and his men give Frodo and Sam many gifts when they part including food and supplies. Along with that they are given 2 staves that are made out of the wood of what tree?

Answer: Lebethron

Faramir gives them the staves and tells them "a virtue has been set upon them of finding and returning. May that virtue not wholly fail under the shadow into which you go!"
11. Shelob was the last child of whom?

Answer: Ungoliant

Tolkien's descriptions of the history and thoughts of this unfathomable creature are haunting.
12. What was Sam's Gaffer's eldest brother's name?

Answer: Uncle Andy

Sam speaks of his Uncle Andy more than once through out the books. He is mentioned in "The Two Towers" when Frodo is poking fun at Sam about his knot tying abilities and Sam defends himself explaining that it is in his blood to tie a good knot.
13. Which of these words does Frodo not exclaim when holding aloft the light of Earendil?

Answer: Gallad

Frodo exclaims "Aiya Earendil Elenion Ancalima" when holding the phial of Galadriel. He is surprised to hear the words escape his lips for he does not speak Elvish. It is the power of this glass that saves their lives while traveling in the tunnels of Torech Ungol.
14. What are Sam's last words in "The Two Towers"?

Answer: "You're forgetting the great big elvish warrior that's loose!"

"Frodo is alive but taken by the enemy" is the last line of the book, but it was not spoken by Sam. His last words are stated before he storms off to rescue Frodo from the tower.
15. Which of these is not the title of a chapter in the book?

Answer: The Tower of Cirith Ungol

"The Tower Of Cirith Ungol" is actually the first chapter of Book VI in "The Return of the King". Hope you enjoyed my quiz. Look for my other "Lord of the Rings" quizzes under Literature. Thanks for playing!
