Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Fellowship member died at the very start of the book?

Answer: Boromir

At the end of "The Fellowship of the Ring", Boromir tried to take the Ring from Frodo, but Frodo got away. Boromir then came to the aid of Merry and Pippin and fell while trying to defend them. He is found by Aragorn in the first Chapter of "TTT" and speaks his last words. Gandalf fell at the bridge of Khazad-dûm in "FotR", Pippin was taken by the Orcs and Faramir was not a Fellowship member but the brother of Boromir.
2. To what country do Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli come while pursuing the Orcs?

Answer: Rohan

They come into the Mark of Rohan, where they encouter Éomer, Third Marshall of the Mark. They learn that the Riders of Rohan have utterly destroyed the Orcs in their land and that none survived.
3. When Aragorn and company start tracking the Orcs they soon find some Orc bodies. How many slain Orcs did they find?

Answer: 5

They find the bodies of 5 slain Orcs from Mordor. Aragorn guesses that they quarreled with the Orcs of Saruman since Men seldomnly travel in that region. More can be read in the Chapter 'Uruk-Hai'. The Orcs from the North want to return to Sauron while the Uruks insist on going back to Saruman in Isengard. They kill some of Sauron's Orcs to enforce their will.
4. Along the way they suddenly stumble upon an item from one of the taken Hobbits. What was it?

Answer: The elvenbrooch of Pippin

Aragorn spotted the elvenbrooch near hobbitfootprints. He guessed those were Pippin's footprints, since Pippin was smaller than Merry. Now they knew they weren't searching in vain and that at least one Hobbit had been alive.
5. How many Riders were slain in the battle with Orcs, that had captured Merry and Pippin?

Answer: 15

Fifteen Riders had been killed out of 120 (one complete éored). Aragorn and his friends came upon a hill where the Riders were buried and 15 spears set into the ground. The horses of three of the Riders had been taken back with the remaining éored and given to Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas to help them find Merry and Pippin.
6. Who was the father of Éomer?

Answer: Éomund

Éomer introduces himself as Éomer, son of Éomund. Théoden was the 17th King of Rohan and King at that time (Éomer would succeed him later) and Éomer's Uncle. Thengel was Théoden's father and Denethor was Steward of Gondor at that time and father to Boromir and Faramir.
7. Who was the leader of the Isengard Orcs?

Answer: Uglúk

Uglúk was the leader of the Isengarders. Saruman wanted the Hobbits alive so they could lead him to the Ring. Grishnákh was the Orc that lead the Mordor Orcs of the Party, Shagrat was an Orc and Commander of the Tower of Cirith Ungol. Gorbag was an Uruk from Minas Morgul.
8. Which Ent got burned in Isengard?

Answer: Beechbone

It was Beechbone, as mentioned by Merry and Pippin in the chapter "Flotsam and Jetsam". Quickbeam briefly carried Merry and Pippin during their march to Isengard, Bregalad is his Elvish name and Treebeard is the great Ent known as Fangorn.
9. What is the elvish name for Treebeard?

Answer: Fangorn

Fangorn, or Treebeard, is the oldest living thing in Middle-Earth, save for Tom Bombadil perhaps.
10. What was the name of the Captain of King Théoden's Guard?

Answer: Háma

Háma was the Captain of the Guard; Théoden was very fond of him. He fell in the Battle of Helm's Deep. Gríma Wormtongue was Saruman's spy sent to poison Théoden's mind. Erkendbrand was the Leader of the Westfold and Grimbold was the Lord of Grimdale and one of the Chief Captains of the Mark (right behind the three Marshals, Elfhelm, Théodred and Éomer.

The Chief Marshal had been slain 17 years ago and Théodred, the Kings son had died a few weeks before the events in LotR in Rohan). Grimbold fell in the Battle of the Pelennor Fields.
11. How many Orcs did Legolas kill in the Battle of Helm's Deep?

Answer: 41

He killed 41, one less then Gimli ("'Forty-two, Master Legolas!' he cried. 'Alas! My axe is notched; the forty-second had an iron collar on his neck. How it with you?' 'You have passed my score by one,' answered Legolas. 'But I do not grudge you the game, so glad am I to see you on your legs'." Chapter VIII, Book 3 ("TTT"), 'The Road to Isengard')
12. Which person did not look into the Palantír of Orthanc?

Answer: Gandalf

Gríma threw the stone at Gandalf and Aragorn, not knowing what device he had just cast away. Saruman looked into the Palantír when he betrayed the West. Pippin looked into the stone at night, secretly, and Aragorn shortly after that, openly declaring himself as Elendil's heir to Sauron (though this fact is not mentioned until 'Return of the King'. I decided to keep this part in the quiz anyway). Gandalf never looked into the stone but left with Pippin after the Hobbit had looked into the stone.
13. Who leads Frodo and Sam through the Marshes?

Answer: Gollum

Frodo and Sam finally captured Gollum and tamed him by letting him swear on the Precious that he would not betray them.
14. When walking through Ithilien, Frodo and Sam are found by Rangers of Ithilien, led by Faramir. They are on an Errand to ambush a Party of Haradrim. Which person was not among those who found Frodo and Sam?

Answer: Anborn

Faramir himself was leading the three men that found the Hobbits. Mablung (probably named after Mablung of the Heavy Hand, Elf of Doriath) and Damrod are left to guard the Hobbits while the rest ambushes the Southrons. The fourth person is not named. Anborn was another Ranger of Faramir's Company, who captured Gollum. Mablung was also in the Company that challenged the Dark Lord before the gates of Mordor. Mablung had discovered that an ambush was waiting for them and lead the ambush of the ambushers.
15. What did Gollum do that enraged the Rangers of Ithilien?

Answer: He fished from the forbidden Pool

He was fishing out of the Pool near Henneth Annûn. Coming to Henneth Annûn forfeited his life but Frodo pleaded to let him live.
16. True or False: Gollum had known Shelob before he led Frodo and Sam to Mordor.

Answer: True

Gollum had met her and had promised to bring her food. When he had led the Hobbits to Cirith Ungol, he warned Shelob that food was on the way.
17. What drove Shelob back, eventually?

Answer: The Phial of Galadriel

Sam stabbed Shelob with Sting, then used the Phial of Galadriel to scorge her eyes. She retreated and was never seen again in the World.
18. What item did Sam not take when he left Frodo behind?

Answer: The Mithril Coat

Sam was surprised by Orcs. He already had Sting and the Phial, with which he had scared Shelob away. He took the Ring from Frodo to make sure the Orcs wouldn't find it and hid.
19. What was Lugbúrz?

Answer: The Barad-dûr

Lugbúrz was the name for the Barad-dûr in the language of Mordor. The Orcs Gorbad and Shagrat mention it while carrying Frodo away. Grishnákh also mentions the place several times.
20. Which Orc was in command of Cirith Ungol?

Answer: Shagrat

Shagrat was the Captain of the Tower. Ufthak was an Orc once captured by Shelob, Snaga was an Orc of the Tower of Cirith Ungol and Gorbag was an Uruk from Minas Morgul.
