Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Appendix B: What was the date of Sauron's fall and the Ring destroyed?

Answer: March 25, 3019

This is one of the very few direct allusions to Christianity that Tolkien included in LOTR. In some traditions, March 25 is the date that the angel Gabriel came down to the virgin Mary to tell her she would conceive the Messiah. He discuses this allusion is Letters of Tolkien, and comments on how most people miss it.
2. Appendix B: In 2683 the tenth Thain began excavating the Great Smials. What is that Thain's name?

Answer: Isengrim II

Merry, Pippin, and Frodo are all direct descendants of Isengrim II. According to the Prologue, Isengrim II is the famous Bandobras "Bullroarer" Took. However, if you refer to the Took family tree, there is some conflict. The family tree lists Bandobras's father not as Isengrim II but Isumbras III.
3. Appendix B: What year of the Third Age does Elrond wed Celebrian?

Answer: 109

130 is the year Elrond's sons are born, Elladan and Elrohir. Arwen Undomiel is born in the year 241. They are the grandchild of Galadriel and Celeborn.
4. Appendix C: Which famous hobbit is not a direct descendant of Gerontius, the Old Took?

Answer: Samwise

Bilbo also had the Old Took as a grandfather. Though Frodo, Merry, and Pippin are all releated to Bilbo, and so is Samwise, the three main hobbits are not related to Samwise.
5. Appendix C: In what way are Frodo (on his father's side) and Bilbo related?

Answer: 2nd cousin

Although the Bilbo and Frodo are often thought of in terms of uncle and nephew, according to the Appendixes they are actually both 1st cousins (through his mother and once removed) and 2nd cousins (through his father and once removed). However, in the text of "The Lord of the Rings" Bilbo's relationship to Frodo is referred to in that matter, suggesting their relationship is more like Uncle-Nephew than a cousin relationship.
6. Appendix C: Which hobbit is NOT one of Gerontius Took's 12 children?

Answer: Isumbras III

Gerontius is Bilbo's grandfather and Frodo's great grandfather. He does have a child named Isumbras IV, which is named after Isumbras III, Gerontius's great grandfather.
7. Appendix D: Every year began and ended on specific days of the week. What were the days?

Answer: Begins Saturday, ends Friday

Saturday is the first day of the week, and Friday is the last day of the week. Leap Day, only present in leap years, have no weekly designation, and known as the Overlithe day.
8. Appendix D: The Quenya word "yen" is often tranlasted as a single "year." However, this is not accurate to the original meaning of the word used by the Eldar. According to the Eldar's usage, how many of our years comprises one "yen"?

Answer: 144

The yen bears the same numerical value as One Gross from Chapter I of "The Lord of the Rings", which is the total number of people invited to Bilbo's special party. The Eldar also devided the yen into six day weeks, and these were called enquier.
9. Appendix E: The Alphabet Tengwar was developed by who?

Answer: The Noldor

The Noldor developed the first alphabet. The Sindar developed a different system of writing called the Cirth.
10. Appendix E: The language Quenya uses the letter 'y' as a vowel.

Answer: False

According to the vowel section of this Appendix, only in Sindarin is the letter 'y' a vowel. Sindarin was the language of the Teleri, those who never went on the great journey into Valinor. Before the Great Cataclysm that in Tolkien's universe gave rise to the myth of Atlantis, the men of Numenor spoke Sindarin.

After the fall of Numenor, Sindarin became much like Latin in the Middle-Ages in that it was a mostly dead language, but still those scholars and people of high learning used it.
