Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Appendix F: What geographical area was NOT considered part of Gondor and Arnor?

Answer: Mirkwood

According to the opening paragraph of Appendix F, the boundaries of the old kingdoms went as far inland as the Misty Mountains. After Aragorn regained the crown, he did not travel to Arnor for seventeen years, in 1436. In the unpublished, abandoned epilogue, Tolkien writes of an earlier journey by Aragorn into his northern realm, although there is no other reference in Tolkien's writings to this earlier journey.
2. Appendix F: Thranduil, in all likelihood, was an East-elf.

Answer: False

There are two main branches of Elves, the East and the West. Most of the Elves of Mirkwood and Lorien are East Elves, leading one to the (false) safe assumption that Thranduil, Legolas's father, is an East Elf.

However, if you read Appendix B, Tolkien reveals that Thranduil is actually a Sindar elf and is one of the Eldar.
3. Appendix F: Galadriel was sister to who?

Answer: Finrod

Galadriel is of the royal house of Finarfin, and sister to Finrod Felagund, king of Nargathrond. Duane Allman of named his only child Galadrielle, in honor of the Lady of Lothlorien. Galadriel first appeared in the legendarium during the composition of "The Lord of the Rings".
4. Appendix F: The Wild Men of Druadan Forest had their own language, but this language is not represented in any of the multitude of proper names within "The Lord of the Rings" save for one instance. What is the only name from this language in "The Lord of the Rings"?

Answer: Forgoil

Forgoil is the name given by the Wild Men to the Rohirrim. According to Appendix F, there were those among the Wild Men who could speak the Common Tongue, but only brokenly. Ghan-buri-ghan was one such Wild Man.
5. Appendix F: Which Fellowship of the Ring member's true name is Ranugad?

Answer: Samwise Gamgee

Sam and his father Ham's true name is Banazir and Ranugad. Hobbit names that ended with "a" are masculine, and "o" and "e" are the feminine endings.
6. Appendix A: What was the first Numenoran king to speak openly against the Ban of the Valar?

Answer: Tar Atanamir

One of the main themes of "The Lord of the Rings" is death. The Valar put a ban on the Numenoreans, stating they could not sail West in search of the Undying lands. Tar-Atanamir was the first King to speak out against that ban, declaring the undying life of the Eldar was his by right. According to Appenedix A, death haunted the minds of the people, and two main factions developed on the Island: the Faithful, who did not wish to go against the Valar, the others followers of the King.
7. Appendix B: In the Third Age, the Istari arrived on Middle-earth. These were the five wizards. They called one of the wizards Curunir. What does this name translate into?

Answer: The Man of Skill

Curunir is the name the Eldar gave to Saruman. Gandalf was known as Mithrandir, and it meant "The Grey Pilgrim". Sharkey, which is the name Saruman goes by in "The Scourging of the Shire", means "Old Man" in Orcish.
8. In a post-publication revision, Tolkien added Estella Bolger as the wife of Meriadoc Brandybuck and sister to Fredegar "Fatty" Bolger. What decade was this revision first published?

Answer: 1960s

Estella Bolger first appeared in the third Ballantine Books edition of 1966. In one of Tolkien's personal copies of "The Lord of the Rings", he indicated that she was present at Bilbo's Birthday Party. In 1955, Tolkien sent a version of Samwise's genealogy that different from the subsequently published version. Sam and Rose had fourteen children, including Lily in 1444.

However, Tolkien removed Lily from the genealogy because he wanted Sam to pass the Old Took in number of children by one only.
9. Appendix E: There are two main alphabets used for writing. The first is Certar or Cirth. Tolkien tells of of another, and gives two names for the second alphabet. One name is short, and the other long. What is the long name of the second?

Answer: Tengwar

The Certar or Cirth are primarily runes used for stone work and inscription. The Tengwar or Tiw are letters used primarily for brush or pen. The Tengwar is far the most ancient. The Noldor developed that particular writing system before they were exiled.
10. Appendix F: How long ago did the hobbits of Bree and the Shire adopt adopt the Common Speech at the time the War of the Ring began?

Answer: About a thousand years

The Hobbits did not have any particular language that they could claim as their own, unlike most other races in Tolkien's legendarium. They primarily used the language their Mannish neighbors used.
