Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I was the Lord of Lossarnach and came with 200 men to aid Gondor in a time of need.

Answer: Forlong

The people of Minas Tirith often called him Forlong the Fat or Forlong the Brave. He was the Lord of Lossarnach. His name was mentioned in the song "The Mounds of Mundberg," sung by a person in Rohan. After Forlong's death many of the men from Lossarnach lived and worked in Minas Tirith. Forlong's successor was unkown.
2. I made Merry a knight of Rohan.

Answer: Eomer

Theoden made Merry a squire, since he wanted to hear so much about the lifestyle of Hobbits. When Theoden received the Red Arrow he relieved Merry of his service. It was after the War of the Ring that the new king, Eomer, made Merry a Knight of Rohan. Eomer would later wed Lothiriel, daughter of Imrahil, and they would have a son together named Elfwine. Eomer became the 2nd longest reigning King of Rohan (behind only Aldor the Old). Eomer reigned for 65 years.
3. I am the Lieutenant of Barad-dur.

Answer: The Mouth of Sauron

The Mouth of Sauron (MOS) was believed to be a Black Numenorean, who was taken in by Sauron, and was taught necromancy.
The MOS rode out to meet Aragorn and show to the heroes Frodo's mithril vest, Sam's sword, and an elven cloak. The MOS told them Sauron's terms: he ordered Gondor and its allies to withdraw back to the Anduin; to take oaths to never try and overthrow Sauron again; and to give all land west of the Anduin as far as the Misty Mountains as a tribute to Sauron. Aragorn denied these terms, which started the battle of Dagorlad. The fate of the MOS is unknown.
4. I was the Gatekeeper in Bree. I later joined Bill Ferney's crew of ruffians.

Answer: Harry Goatleaf

Harry Goatleaf was the gatekeeper, in Bree, that the hobbits met on their entrance to Bree. When the Hobbits returned back from their long journey they discovered Harry had run off with Bill Ferney and his crew.
5. I was the Thain of the Shire, father of Peregrin.

Answer: Paladin

The title of "Thain" means "chieftain of the Shire." Paladin was Thain at the time of the scouring of the Shire. He and his Tooks, according to Farmer Cotton, started the fighting, because they wouldn't give in to the ruffian's demands. It was the Thain's right to protect the Shire against anything he saw as "evil." Later on Pippin became the Thain of the Shire.
6. I committed treason against my lord, but was spared by King Elessar. Later, I became the personal guard of Faramir.

Answer: Beregond

Beregond went against his Lord Denethor to save his beloved captain Faramir. Beregond killed three of Denethor's servants and risked his life to save Faramir. Since Beregond committed treason against Denethor he was put on trial. King Elessar spared him and placed him amongst Faramir's personal guard. Beregond had a son named Bergil. Both of them became good friends with Pippin.
7. I was Theoden's grandfather and the least liked King of Rohan.

Answer: Fengel

Fengel was the third son and fourth child of Folcwine. He was not remembered with praise. He was greedy for more gold, and caused trouble with the marshals of the Mark. He was often at odds with his son, so much so that his only son, Thengel, left Rohan and lived for a long time in Gondor. Thengel would, unwillingly, return to Rohan to become king after his father died.
8. Incanus was one of my many nicknames.

Answer: Gandalf

The men of Harad called Gandalf "Incanus". It means "north-spy." Some other names for Gandalf include Olorin (his name in Valinor), Mithrandir (his name amongst the elves), and Tharkun (his name amongst the dwarves). He had many nicknames (some more friendly then others) including, Greybeard, grey pilgrim, white rider, greyhame, lothspell, and grey fool.
9. I was one of Theoden's sisters and later would marry Eomund.

Answer: Theodwyn

Theodwyn married and had two kids, Eomer and Eowyn. Eomund was slain pursuing a small band of orcs into Emyn Muil. He was ambushed by a large force that was hiding there. Soon after, Theodwyn would fall sick and die. Lothiriel married Eomer, Morwen of Lossarnach was married to Thengel, and Gilraen married Arathorn II.
10. I discovered Sauron's servants searching the Anduin, near Gladden fields. I was alarmed that Sauron had learned about Isildur's end, but I did not warn the Council.

Answer: Saruman

Saruman was the head of the White Council. He had studied the three Elven rings and knew the lore of the One Ring well. Saruman discovered Sauron's servants searching the Anduin, near Gladden fields. This would mean Sauron had learned about Isildur's death and learned that the One Ring wasn't destroyed. Saruman was alarmed by this, but did not tell the Council. Two years later Saruman agreed to attack Dol Guldur and throw Sauron out. Saruman did this in hopes that Sauron wouldn't search the Anduin anymore, even though by this time the Ring was in Bilbo's possesion.
11. I decided to ride out to glory during the battle of Helm's Deep. I thought we were charging to certain death until I saw a rider clad in White.

Answer: Theoden

Theoden was known as "Theoden Ednew" by his people. Since, he slipped into years of decline due to the ill council of Grima Wormtongue. Then he rose and achieved victory at Helm's Deep and soon, later, upon the Fields of Pelennor. Theoden was slain before the gates of Minas Tirith.

His tomb lay in Gondor for a while, until it was brought back to Edoras, creating the final mound of the second line.
12. I was the High Warden of the White Tower of Ecthelion.

Answer: Boromir

Boromir's name, in a mixture of Sindarin and Quenya, means "faithful jewel."
For a little bit of history - you had the steward Ecthelion I, followed by Denethor I, followed by Boromir I. Then you have Ecthelion II, followed by Denethor II, followed by Boromir II. Coincidence? Or did Ecthelion II purposefully name his son the same as Ecthelion I did? You can ask the same question about the two Denethors.
13. During my reign Gondor had reached the height of its power.

Answer: Hyarmendacil I

It was said during Hyarmendacil I's reign that no enemy would go
against Gondor. Hyarmendacil was one of the four ship kings. The four ship kings were, Falastur (the first childless king), Earnil I, Ciryandil, and the last, Hyarmendacil I.
14. I helped Theoden through the stonewain valley, because I wanted to see gorgun dead.

Answer: Ghan-Buri-Ghan

Theoden realized their road was blocked by orcs. He decided to trust the pukel-men to lead them through the stonewain valley and the Druadan Forest. This was so Rohan can reach Minas Tirith without being delayed any longer. The pukel-men called orcs "gorgun" and the men of Rohan "horse-lords." Ghan-Buri-Ghan agreed to help if Rohan would let his wildmen live in peace.
15. I stabbed a troll, in the foot, while in Moria.

Answer: Frodo

Frodo was much braver than the movies made him out to be. Instead of falling down all the time, like he did in the movies, he stabbed a wraith in the foot. In Moria, he ran up to Boromir and stabbed a troll in the foot. Frodo was one of three people (not including Bilbo) who knew the truth about how Bilbo acquired the Ring. Gandalf and Gollum were the other two who knew.
16. I am the chief of Elrond's house.

Answer: Erestor

Erestor was one of the five elves at the council of Elrond. He proposed the idea of giving the ring to Tom Bombadil. Glorfindel thought that to be unwise because Tom would have no care for such things and would misplace it. Also, according to Glorfindel, if all of Sauron's power went against Tom, he would fall.
17. I was also present at the Council of Elrond. I had come on an errand from Cirdan.

Answer: Galdor

Galdor was another elf at the council. He wondered why Saruman wasn't present at the Council of Elrond and wanted some "proofs" that this was the One Ring. Legolas was a messenger from his father, Thranduil. Glorfindel was the one who rescued Frodo from the wraiths. And Gildor was an elf Frodo and company met on their way to Bree.
18. I am called the Shipwright.

Answer: Cirdan

Cirdan was one of the original bearers of the three Elven rings. Cirdan then gave his ring, Narya, up to Gandalf. It really wasn't said why, but possibly because Cirdan knew Gandalf would be the only wizard who would stay true to his task, the task of aiding the inhabitants of Middle-Earth against Sauron. Cirdan was over 10,000 years old and was the only elf to have a beard.
19. We are twins and our father is Lord Elrond.

Answer: Elladan and Elrohir

Elladan and Elrohir went along with Halbarad to bring word to Aragorn. They brought word from Elrond advising Aragorn to travel the paths of the dead. Earlier, Elladan and Elrohir rescued their mother, Celebrian, after being captured and wounded by orcs traveling through the Redhorn pass. Eladin I just made up myself. Elros was Elrond's brother and chose to live a mortal life. Hama and Haleth were Helm Hammerhand's sons.

They died before one could become king. Rumil and Orophin were the brothers of Haldir.
20. I sent word to Halbarad to gather the Dunedain and find Aragorn because I knew that's what he really wanted.

Answer: Galadriel

When the company was in Lothlorien she saw what Aragorn really wanted. Galadriel was the most powerful elf of the 3rd age, known for overthrowing Sauron at Dol Guldur. Galadriel's great power was due to three reasons: she was a bearer of one of the elven rings; her lineage; and, mostly, because she saw the two trees of Valinor. Most Noldor elves saw the two trees and whoever did had great powers.
