Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When Frodo began his quest to destroy the Ring, he purchased a house to "retire" to. Where was it located?

Answer: Crickhollow

This house was a decoy, and a rather clever one at that. It offered an excuse for Frodo to disappear without arousing suspicion. He spread the rumour that his money was running out, and he would be moving to a nice, quiet little place somewhere outside of Hobbiton.
2. What was the name of the golden flower which grows everywhere in Lothlorien?

Answer: Elanor

This lovely little blossom was first seen in the first book, then came into play at the very end of the trilogy, when Sam named his baby daughter Elanor. Athelas was the healing herb used by Aragorn, and Mallorn is the name of the trees in Lothlorien which had gold leaves and silver bark.
3. Who was the keeper of the third elven ring (Narya, the ring of fire) during the War of The Ring?

Answer: Gandalf

The ring was originally given to Cirdan the shipwright, but he gave it to Gandalf to help him in the fight against Sauron.
4. During the Entmoot, Merry and Pippin were taken to the house of a young, "hasty" ent. What was the name of this character?

Answer: Quickbeam

Ents tended to be very slow about everything they did. Quickbeam was given this name because he once answered an older Ent before the elder finished asking the question. Wandlimb was the name of an Entwife, Fangorn was another name for Treebeard, and Skinbark was another Ent mentioned by Treebeard.
5. In "The Return Of The King", the men defending Gondor received great help from a prince named Imrahil. Where was his principality?

Answer: Dol Amroth

Imrahil was a kinsman to Denethor, of high blood. It was he who, during Gandalf's absences, commanded the men inside Minas Tirith. He also ruled the city until Faramir recovered.
6. In the houses of healing (within Minas Tirith), there was a woman who wished for the king's return, saying, "The hands of the king are the hands of a healer." What was this woman's name?

Answer: Ioreth

Ioreth was a wise woman, but extremely talkative. She provided a bit of comic relief towards the end of "The Return Of The King". Eowyn was the warrior-princess of Rohan, Idril was an Elf-Princess of Gondolin (found in the Silmarillion), and Iorlas was actually a man. He was the uncle of Bergil, mentioned in passing.
7. What was the gift which Eowyn gave to Merry at their last parting?

Answer: A horn

Eowyn gave Merry this horn, which once belonged to Eorl The Young. It was silver and green, and carved all round with swift horsemen in a line. The horn had a virtue similar to that of the one owned by Queen Susan in C.S. Lewis' "The Chronicles Of Narnia". It would summon help to the one who blew it.
8. What was the name of the farmer whose mushrooms Frodo used to sneak in and steal?

Answer: Maggot

In "The Fellowship Of The Ring", Frodo was reluctant to seek help from Farmer Maggot, because he still harbored a strong fear of his dogs. In the end, his fear was laid to rest, and the old farmer was a great help to the traveling hobbits. Farmer Cotton was the father of Sam's sweetheart, Rosie. Fatty Bolger was a friend of Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin, and Underhill was Frodo's traveling name.
9. Who was the elf that assisted Strider and the hobbits at the fords of Bruinen? (as found in the book)

Answer: Glorfindel

Glorfindel was a high elf dwelling at Rivendell. It is a pet peeve of mine that he was replaced by another elf in both film versions of "The Lord Of The Rings".
10. What name did Aragorn give to his sword after it was re-forged?

Answer: Anduril

He named the sword Anduril, which means Flame Of The West. When in use, it seemed to flame brightly, and frightened all his enemies. Narsil was the original name of the sword, before and during the time when it was broken. Those who have read "The Hobbit" will know that Orcrist and Glamdring were the swords belonging to Thorin and Gandalf, respectively.
