My Top Ten Favorite Books Trivia Quiz

Just like my music quiz "My Personal Top Ten", this is about my favorite books, counting downwards from number ten. Each author - with one exception - appears just once; otherwise this quiz would only feature two or three different authors :)

Question 1 of 10
1. Number ten is a lesser-known Agatha Christie novel - neither Poirot nor Miss Marple nor Tommy & Tuppence - which deals with an institution that helps people getting rid of special persons. Historian Mark Easterbrook gets involved in the strange business, and - with some help from well-known author Ariadne Oliver - can bring it to an end. Which novel is it? Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. Number nine is by the "German Stephen King" Wolfgang Hohlbein. It's about eighteen-year-old Mark Sillman who learns horrifying things about his past: His father tested a new drug on him and some of his friends when Mark was six. When several strange murders and suicides happen, everything seems to be connected to this incident from long ago... What is this novel called? Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. Number eight - another German one: A great psychological thriller by bestselling novelist Charlotte Link. The book deals with the story of Leona Dorn, whose husband leaves her right on the day Leona witnesses an unexpected suicide. Since she was the last person the victim - Eva - has talked to, Leona attends the funeral, where she meets Eva's brother Robert. Robert and Leona begin an affair, but there's something about Robert Leona can't understand: He is extremely jealous, watching over her when he's actually supposed to be at work, wanting to know her every move... Leona can't stand this and breaks up with him. A fatal mistake! What is this novel called? Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. Number seven is the book the movie "The Ninth Gate" was based upon. Yet the title is different - do you know what the novel was called? Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. Number six - Irish novelist Maeve Binchy wrote this novel about a beautiful, middle-aged woman named Helen McMahon who disappears one day without a trace. Everyone thinks that she committed suicide - but Helen is still alive and well, living in London together with her first and only love, Louis Gray. But one day, she contacts her daughter Kit, pretending to be a friend of Helen... Which novel is it? Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. Number five - German author Hohlbein again. This is a book he wrote together with his wife Heike. It's the story of a girl nicknamed Thirteen who comes from England to Germany to live with her grandfather, who turns out to be pretty weird. Thirteen soon discovers the secret he's hiding in his strange house... Which novel is it? Hint: Translate the book titles into English, that'll get you very close :) Hint

Question 7 of 10

Answer: (Four Words)
Question 8 of 10
8. Number three: Young wizard has to face the fact that an escaped convict is apparently now after him. Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. Number two - Jeffery Deaver: Lincoln Rhyme and Amelia Sachs have to protect two people who are the target of a killer who has never failed before... Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. Number one: Stephen King - the one and only. Since I have this book also in English, I'll take the chance to quote from the description:
"(...) a novel of extraordinary power and effect, a novel of childhood and innocence, of growing up and coming to terms with life, and of seeping, gurgling, grasping fear..." Need another hint? If you ever wished to float, you'll change your mind after having read this book:

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts

Answer: "The Pale Horse"

Apparently there are only a few people who know this book - I did a quiz about it, but it's barely played :(

Answer: "Azrael"

"Azrael" is the name of this mind-expanding drug, and it really sets the Angel of Death loose. The drug's name in long form is Amphetamin Z 7 Recipropal Ethylmescalin Lopophinderivat. Doesn't sound healthy at all.

Answer: "Der Verehrer" ("The Admirer")

Pure suspense!
4. Number seven is the book the movie "The Ninth Gate" was based upon. Yet the title is different - do you know what the novel was called?

Answer: "The Club Dumas"

By Spanish novelist Arturo Pérez-Reverte. The book is much more complex than the movie, but Polanski did a great job on the film, and Johnny Depp was brillant as Dean Corso (in the book, however, his name is Lucas Corso). "Matutin" is another Pérez-Reverte novel.

Answer: "The Glass Lake"

I really like Maeve Binchy's novels - but after reading three of them, I noticed that she always uses the same types of character. However, "The Glass Lake" is really great: partly funny, partly romantic, partly suspenseful.
Hint: Translate the book titles into English, that'll get you very close :)

Answer: "Dreizehn"

The number thirteen always played a role in Thirteen's life, therefore the nickname.
7. Number four is the first book of "The Vampire Chronicles" by Anne Rice.

Answer: Interview With The Vampire

Great book, wonderful movie.
8. Number three: Young wizard has to face the fact that an escaped convict is apparently now after him.

Answer: "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban"

So far my favorite among the Harry Potter books - partly because of the suspense and the great plot twist in the end, partly because two of my favorite characters are introduced there: Sirius Black and Remus Lupin.
9. Number two - Jeffery Deaver: Lincoln Rhyme and Amelia Sachs have to protect two people who are the target of a killer who has never failed before...

Answer: "The Coffin Dancer"

I'm desparately waiting for "The Stone Monkey" to be published in Germany... can't get enough of the Lincoln Rhyme books!
10. Number one: Stephen King - the one and only. Since I have this book also in English, I'll take the chance to quote from the description: "(...) a novel of extraordinary power and effect, a novel of childhood and innocence, of growing up and coming to terms with life, and of seeping, gurgling, grasping fear..." Need another hint? If you ever wished to float, you'll change your mind after having read this book:

Answer: It

I know half of the novel by heart, but every time I read it, I can't put the book down. My personal record was reading the whole book in two days. All those 1214 pages.
