It's even better because, due to satellite TV, she can now watch it every day. And even more remarkable, the host, Rex McKenna, has started talking to her...

Matt, with financial help from the Nexus, has been sent to an all boys private school, which he hates. The teachers seem to be determined to pick on him, and there are several boys there who are constantly trying to make his life miserable.

Answer: Mr King

Mr King is the English teacher at Forest Hill, who yelled at Matt on the first day for chewing gum in the quadrangle, and thereafter seemed to take every opportunity to pick on Matt.

Answer: William Morton

A bully at school had made Matt lose control, and accidentally blow up the chandelier. He needed to leave, so left school and went home early. When he got back to the flat, he found that Richard was home early, and with him was Mr Fabian and Susan Ashwood, who played a DVD recording of the news from the previous week.

It showed the discovery of the diary of St Joseph of Cordaba, otherwise known as the Mad Monk of Cordaba. The diary contains remarkable predictions, such as the invention of cars, computers, and even the prediction of some sort of Internet, created by the Church.

The diary was found in the city of Cordaba by William Morton, who was planning on selling the diary. He already had offers from someone in South America, and from the Nexus themselves.

This is very worrying to the Nexus, because if the diary gets in to the wrong hands, it could mean the return of the Old Ones...

Answer: Gwenda

In order to try to get revenge on Matt (she was under some sort of spell cast by the Old Ones,) Gwenda needed to, obviously, get to where he was. She hitch hiked, and eventually knocked out the poor man called Harry Shepherd, and stole his truck (although she contemplated killing him.)

Answer: History

Reluctantly, Matt goes back to school the day after he caused the chandelier to explode. He and Gavin get into an argument, and it's then that Matt smells burning toast, the thing he always smells before something is about to happen. This causes him to be late for class, which is history, taught by Miss Ford.

She is described as being one of the better teachers at Forest Hill, who doesn't insist on picking on Matt all the time.

Gwenda Davis, as we learn from the book, is under some sort of enchantment by the Old Ones, who communicate to her through Rex McKenna. After stealing the petrol tanker from Harry Shepherd, she drives it to Forest Hill, where Rex has told her all the boys will be having lunch. Thankfully, thanks to Matt's premonitions, he manages to set off the fire alarm, and get all the boys and teachers out of the school just before Gwenda, in a mad rage, drives the petrol tanker right through the lunch hall.

Answer: The female Bill Gates

When Matt and Richard get to the Nexus, there are twelve people sitting around the table at the Nexus, two of whom we have already met, i.e. Mr Fabian and Susan Ashwood. Also there are a bishop, and a high ranking policeman from Scotland Yard, and an old Chinese man. Also there is Nathalie Johnson, who is sometimes referred to as the female Bill Gates, because she too, is one of the richest people in the world, and also made a fortune in computers.

Answer: St. Meredith's

William Morton agrees only to give the Nexus the diary if he can meet Matt alone at St. Meredith's, which is one of the oldest churches in the city, and there has always been a church on that site since the Middle Ages... If William Morton can see that Matt clearly is One of the Five, he says that he will agree to sell the Nexus the diary.

Answer: His head is twice as long as normal

In Lima, Peru, we first meet the evil Diego Salamanda. His body is described as being "all wrong." He is described as being unnaturally tall, but what gives him the extra height is his head, which is twice as long as a normal head, with his eyes being very high up.

The reason for this abnormality is because some of the ancient tribes in Peru selected babies that they believed to be "special," and forced them to live with their heads sandwiched between two wooden planks, which caused an abnormal growth. Diego Salamanda is also the chairman of Salamanda News International, and is believed to "own" most of Peru.

Answer: A flower

The first thing that we notice that is odd, is that the door William Morton sent Matt through was specifically built for a child. Also, once Matt is through, it's unusually hot, and there are no longer clouds in the sky. These are only some of the weird things that Matt notices, but he wants to get out quick, and so grabs a mauve flower out of a pot, and starts heading back into St. Meredith's.

However, the strangest thing of all, he bumps into a Spanish monk...

Answer: Paul and Robert Carter

After William Morton is murdered in the church, the Nexus decide that it is absolutely imperative that Matt go to Peru in order to try and stop the opening of the second gate. Since they don't want anyone to know that they have even left England, they are given fals passports, with Paul and Robert Carter being their new identity- two brothers going to Peru for a holiday.

Answer: Alberto

In order to try and avoid suspicion, Mr Fabian doesn't want to pick Matt and Richard up himself, and so sends a man called Alberto to pick them up.

Answer: Yellow

When driving to the hotel, the car that Matt and Richard are driving in is attacked, and it's only Matt who manages to escape. He runs and runs, and eventually collapses in an alleyway. He wakes up when Pedro is attempting to steal from him (Pedro, as the book progresses, plays a HUGE part.) Pedro is described as being dirty and rugged, and wearing a yellow T-shirt advertising a cooldrink called Inca Cola.

Answer: Pedro

Pedro is the hero of the hour, who saves Matt from the policemen, using a slingshot made from a strip of black material, either leather or rubber. He has a deadly accuracy, and shoots the policemen with stones. Pedro then grabs Matt's arm, and the two run away from the hotel as fast as they can.
