Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following is not one of the Five?

Answer: Richard

He and Matt are always seen together, but he is a former journalist and not one of the Gatekeepers. Pedro, who has the power of healing, rescued Matt in one of the other books. Jamie has a twin brother named Scott, and both have the power of mind reading. The fifth member of the group is Scarlett, whose power is unknown.
2. Where does Scarlett Adams move to when her parents split up?

Answer: She doesn't

She remains in the house where she grew up, looked after by a housekeeper, so that she can continue her schooling at St. Genevieve's. It is Scarlett's mother who moves to Melbourne and her father to Hong Kong. Jakarta is where Scarlett was prior to being adopted into the Adams family.
3. Who is Joan Chaplin?

Answer: Teacher

The subject she teaches is art. "She was always finding new ways to interest the girls, organizing field trips to exhibitions and events all over London."
4. Which of the following places does Scarlett's art class not visit on their field trip?

Answer: Monastery for the Cry of Mercy

The field trip is in London, not Ukraine-which is where the monastery is located.

St Paul's is where the class eats their lunch. "It was very much part of the blitz because, despite all the bombing, it was not destroyed. The coach will then take us to Shoreditch, and we're going to walk around the area. It's still a bit wet underfoot, so I want us to go indoors." Enter St. Meredith's, where "people used to hide" from the Luftwaffe. "They actually believed it had the power to protect them ... that they'd be safe there."
5. Where was Father Gregory born?

Answer: Moscow

His birth name was Gregor Malenkov, and at nineteen he announced his intentions to become a monk. His father "was horrified. I was his only son, and he had always assumed that I would go into politics, like him. He tried to talk me out of it. He arranged for me to travel around the world, hoping that if I saw all the riches the West had to offer, it would change my mind."

But it only strengthened the young man's resolve: "Everything I saw in Europe and America disgusted me. Wealthy families with large homes and expensive cars, living just a mile away from children who were dying because they could not afford medicine. Countries at war, the people killing and maiming each other because of politicians too stupid to find another way. The noise of modern life: the planes and the cars, the concrete smothering the land. The pollution and the garbage. The people, in their millions, scurrying on their way to jobs they hated."
6. How long was it between the time Scarlett disappeared through the door in St. Meredith's to the time she was found by the authorities?

Answer: 18 hours

By keeping her wits about her, Scarlett managed to escape her captors and slammed the door shut, baffling a police officer that happened to be inside the church.

The next morning, the papers could talk of nothing less. "Although she received treatment for minor scratches, there was no indication that she had been assaulted or kept against her will."
7. What is the name of the man who gives Matt the diary?

Answer: Ramon

He is from Lima, and claims to be "a friend." But if that is true, "Why does he come, like a thief, in the middle of the night?
8. What kind of restaurant is the Happy Garden?

Answer: Chinese

On Friday afternoon, a young man who claims to have an urgent message for Aidan's friend Scarlett approaches Aidan after school.

The man and Aidan arrange a meeting at the restaurant for the next afternoon-but an explosion rocks the building before it can take place. "There was glass and debris all over the pavement, and tongues of flame were licking out of the shattered brickwork."
9. Are Matt, Richard and Jamie able to intercept Scarlett before she boards the plane to Hong Kong?

Answer: No

Their taxi crashes before it is even close. "The other car was an SUV, and it was like being hit by a tank."
10. Which of the following names is not that of a member of the Nexus?

Answer: Audrey Cheng

She is a character who hasn't been introduced yet.

"Originally, there had been twelve members of the Nexus-the organization that existed only to fight the Old Ones. Professor Sanjay Dravid had been the first to be killed, stabbed at the Natural History Museum... Later on, a man named Fabian had also died."
