Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Elrond is descended from which race?

Answer: All of the Above

Most of his relations are Elves, but his Great-grandfather on his mother's side was Beren, a mortal man. And his great-grandfather on his father's side was also a mortal man, Huor. He has only one Maiar relative, Melian, who married Thingol. She was Luthien's mother and the only Maia to marry an Elf.
2. Feanor is a derivation of the name his mother called him. His original name was Curufinwe. One of his sons bears a similar name, what is it.

Answer: Curufin

Curufin was the fifth son of Feanor and the father of Celebrimbor. Feanor was the only child of Finwe and his first wife Miriel, who died after giving birth to Feanor. He was originally called Curufinwe (curu meaning 'skill'), but was called Feanaro ('spirit of fire') by his mother.

This was changed into its Sindarin from 'Feanor'. Feanor was responsible for the creation of the Silmarils and the Feanorian script.
3. How many sons did Feanor have?

Answer: Seven

Feanor had seven sons by Nerdanel daughter of Mahtan. His sons were later often referred to as a group when tryng to retrieve the Silmarils and avenge their father. Their names were, Maedhros, Maglor, Celegorm, Caranthir, Curufin, Amrad and Amras. (The last two were twins)
4. By what name did Beren call Luthien when first he saw her?

Answer: Tinuviel

Luthien was the daughter of Thingol and Melian the Maia. She married Beren son of Barahir and is one of the few Elves to marry a mortal. Tinuviel is usually translated as nightingale but it literally means 'Daughter of Twilight.' Luthien is remembered as the most beautiful Elf ever to have lived, and Arwen, her great-great-granddaughter, is often compared to her in 'The Lord of the Rings.'
5. According to 'The Silmarillion, Galadriel was one of the chief Elves in the Noldorin rebellion against the Valar.

Answer: True

At the time of the War of the Ring in 'The Lord of the Rings' Galadriel was the only remaining leader of the rebellion left in Middle-earth which also made her the oldest Noldorin Elf in Middle-earth. She left Middle-earth after the destruction of the One Ring with the Last Riding of the Keepers of the Rings (she held the ring Nenya). She married Celeborn and they established the Elven Realm of Lothlorien. Her daughter married Elrond, which makes Arwen her grand-daughter.

Tolkien also indicated her involvement in 'The Road Goes Ever On': "She was the last survivor of the princes and queens who had led the revolting Noldor to exile in Middle-earth. After the overthrow of Morgoth at the end of the First Age a ban was set upon her return, and she had replied proudly that she had no wish to do so. She passed over the Mountains of Eredluin with her husband Celeborn (one of the Sindar) and went to Eregion." Later jottings indicate that he wished to revise some of these details, and disassociate her from the rebellion (cf. 'Unfinished Tales', collected and published by his son Christopher).
6. Which of the following names is the 'creator' in the Silmarillion NOT called?

Answer: God

Illuvatar means 'father of all'. Eru means 'The One' or 'He That Is Alone'. Elves and Men are often called the Children of Illuvatar. He is the creator of all, the Silmarillion equivalent of God. He created the Aiunur and the physical world. His very word could make things come into being.
7. The original Dark Lord was Melkor, later renamed Morgoth. What Does Melkor translate to?

Answer: He Who Arises In Might

Melkor/Morgoth was a Vala who rebelled against Illuvatar and eventually set himself up as the ruler of Middle-earth, Sauron was his lieutenant and is nothing compared to his former master. He was renamed Morgoth, which means 'The Black Enemy', by Feanor after he stole the Silmarils. He was also called Bauglir, the Dark Lord, and the Enemy.
8. Morwen and Hurin had three children. What was the name of their second child, who died in childhood?

Answer: Lalaith

Lalaith means 'laughter.' Lalaith 'was beloved by Turin her brother; but when she was three years old there came a pestilence to Hithlum, borne on an evil wind out of Angband, and she died.' Turin and Nienor were the names of Morwen and Hurin's other two children. Nienor means 'Mourning' and she was also called Niniel. Glaurung the dragon cast a spell on her and she forgot who she was and in this state she met Turin her brother who did not recognise her and they fell in love and were married. After she regained her memory she cast her self into the Teiglin.
9. Aredhel, sister of Turgon and daughter of Fingolfin wed the dark elf Eol and gave birth to a son. His father did not name him until he was twelve. Eol gave him the name Maeglin which means Sharp Glance, but from birth Aredhel gave her son a name, which she kept in her heart. What was this name?

Answer: Lomion

'...in her heart she [Aredhel] gave him a name in the forbidden tongue of the Noldor, Lomin, that signifies Child of the Twilight.'
Aredhel wandered into Nan Elmoth where she was captured by Eol, whom she wedded and bore him a son.
10. Melian the Maia, Elenwe, and Celebrian are all ancestors of Half-Elvens.

Answer: True

They are the mothers of Luthien, Idril and Arwen, three Elf-maidens who married mortal men. Luthien married Beren son of Barahir, Idril married Tuor son of Huor and Arwen married Aragorn son of Arathorn. Aragorn's son Eldarion Telcontar, Second High King of the Reunited Kingdom of Gondor and Arnor, is descended from all three unions.
