Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Richard Sharpe's mother is often mentioned in the novels, but how old was Sharpe when she left him at the orphanage?

Answer: We will never know for sure

In "Sharpe's Eagle", the first novel written, Sharpe reminisces about his mother, remembering that she called him a July baby. In some of the novels which come earlier in the chronology of Sharpe's life but were written later, he is described as having been left at the orphanage as a newborn.
2. Sharpe's first attempt at marriage happens in "Sharpe's Tiger". What is the name of the woman to whom he proposes but who later marries another?

Answer: Mary

Mary is the child of an Indian mother and British father who has grown up living with the British Army. Accompanying Sharpe on his undercover mission, she finds herself living with an Indian family, and, deciding she would like to return to her Indian heritage, marries one of the men she meets there.
3. Who was the first woman, as far as we know(!), to bear Sharpe a child?

Answer: Grace

Sharpe met Grace on his voyage home from India. She was the wife of Lord William Hale whom she shot during the Battle of Trafalgar, in which their ship became involved, leaving her free to live with Sharpe whose baby she was already carrying. Sadly, she and the baby, a son, died in childbirth, leaving Sharpe a broken man.
4. Who was Sharpe's Danish love?

Answer: Astrid Skovgaard

We know, but Sharpe does not, that Astrid and her father were assassinated on the order of Lord Pumphrey, an agent of the British Government.
5. Ever the gallant officer, Sharpe comes to the rescue of Josefina Lacosta in "Sharpe's Eagle". Who links that incident with Sharpe's future wife Jane?

Answer: Christian Gibbons

Sharpe rescues her from an attack by Gibbons and Berry. Gibbons is Jane's brother.
6. Why did Louisa Parker wish to stay in Spain rather than return to England with her aunt and uncle?

Answer: She did not wish to marry Mr Bufford.

Louisa had come to Spain with her aunt and uncle to spread the Protestant message, something which she finds highly embarrassing but puts up with as it gives her a chance to see the great cities of Granada and Seville. At the point Sharpe meets her in "Sharpe's Rifles", her relatives are about to take her back to England to marry Mr Bufford.

Although Sharpe falls for her, she rejects his charms and instead marries Spanish aristocrat Don Blas Vivar and converts to Catholicism.
7. At the start of "Sharpe's Havoc", he is sent on a mission to find Kate Savage. Had he met her before?

Answer: No

Kate had, in fact, eloped to escape her boring life as the daughter of an English widow in Portugal.
8. In which city did Sharpe marry his first wife Teresa?

Answer: Badajoz

Surviving the siege of Badajoz ,and being one of the first men into the city, took on a special importance for Sharpe after he discovered that Teresa had given birth to his daughter, who was in the city. He and Teresa were married before the army marched on.
9. Who gave Teresa her nickname, La Aguja?

Answer: Sharpe

La Aguja means The Needle.
10. Who killed Teresa?

Answer: An English deserter

The English deserter was Sharpe's old foe Hakeswill. This was the last of his many crimes. It happened at the end of "Sharpe's Enemy", after which he suffered death by firing squad.
11. Sharpe first met Jane Gibbons when he travelled to England in "Sharpe's Regiment".

Answer: False

In fact, Sharpe had met Jane Gibbons on a previous trip to England which is described at the beginning of "Sharpe's Company".
12. What is the name of the widow who helps Sharpe to reveal the scheme to sell recruits enlisted into the South Essex to other regiments?

Answer: Lady Camoynes

Lady Camoynes does well for herself out of this as she is able to bribe Lord Fenner with her knowledge of the part he played in the scandal and so secure a sound financial future for her son.
13. What is the name of Patrick Harper's wife?

Answer: Isabella

Her name was changed to Ramona in the TV series.
14. With whom does Jane fall in love after leaving Sharpe, taking his money and his heart?

Answer: Lord Rossendale

We can only assume she lives to regret her treachery towards the hero officer. Following Waterloo, he returns to his life with Lucille as a retired Lieutenant-Colonel whereas she, pregnant with the late Lord Rossendale's child, presumably ends her life in poverty and ignominy.
15. Richard Sharpe ends the series happily married to Lucille in Normandy.

Answer: False

Although he spends the rest of his days with Lucille, who bears him a son and a daughter, he is unable to marry her because he is still married to Jane, in the days when divorce was not an option.
