Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The prologue takes place a few years before the main plot of the book, with the emperor Kellanved still reigning over the Malazan Empire. Erikson tells us this happens in the 96th year of the Malazan Empire and in the 1154th year of...?

Answer: Burn's Sleep

Next to nothing is revealed about Burn in "Gardens of the Moon", but it is safe to assume he is an elder god/goddess, having given name to the counting of the years.
2. "In the Year of Burn's Sleep 1163, the Siege of Pale ended with a now legendary sorcerous conflagration". Thus states the Imperial Campaigns Volume IV at the beginning of the book. Tattersail survived the attack on Moon's Spawn while her lover did not. What was his name?

Answer: Calot

During the attack on Moon's Spawn he broke off the attack on the fortress to defend Tattersail, channeling his Mockra Warren towards her. This made him vulnerable to attacks and he perished in the siege.
3. The spinning coin is a theme throughout most of the books, as it represents Oponn's involvement in the affairs of men on Genbackis. Who is The Coin Bearer?

Answer: Crokus

Unwillingly he ends up aligned with the Twins of Chance as he holds on to their coin without really knowing why. While travelling with Apsalar, Kalam and Fiddler to Itko Kan he throws the coin across the side of the boat.
4. The Eel is an elusive figure in the Darujhistan underground, with no clear identity throughout most of the book. It is later revealed that Kruppe is The Eel, but what was the name of his agent who spent most of his time doing the graveyard shift at Despot's Barbican?

Answer: Circle Breaker

Circle Breaker was the primary middle-man for The Eel throughout "Gardens of the Moon". During the Fête he was relieved of duty by Kruppe and given documents to start a new life in Dhavran with an estate and title as a reward for his services throughout many years.
5. As Hairlock travels towards Darujhistan he is incinerating ravens with the help of his Chaos Warrens. Who manages to survive an encounter with him despite his terrible powers?

Answer: Crone

While Hairlock's power is tremendous, she witnessed it before his attack and was thus able to defend herself long enough to escape his magic. The T'Lan Imass Tool witnessed this from below and commented on the crone's overly complacent actions towards forces much stronger than her.
6. The Warrens are used by mages to wield powerful magic. Some of the Warrens house beings much greater than man and beast. All Warrens stem from the first Warren: Starvald Demelain. What is NOT another name for this warren?

Answer: Hold of Ice

The Hold of Ice is another name for Omtose Phellack, the Jaghut Warren. It was believed to bring the cold required to temper the fire and heat of life. Except the Jaghut, very few have been known to use The Hold of Ice.
7. As the Jaghut Tyrant travels toward Darujhistan, he enters Kruppe's Dream and is confronted by Kruppe and the elder god K'rul. In order to escape them and continue his attack on the city, he takes possession of another body. Whom does he possess?

Answer: Mammot

The possessed Mammot is attacked by Quick Ben; he is using seven Warrens, a skill mastered by few. As Hedge fires a munitions crossbow towards the Jaghut, the finnest (now controlled by the Azath) imprisons the Jaghut Tyrant in the newly risen Azath House.
8. Paran is pulled into the Realm of Shadow shortly after the battle against the Jaghut Tyrant. Here he relinquishes his sword Chance, releasing Oponn's hold on him. Whom does he give the sword to?

Answer: Cotillion

Paran has, at this point, known for some time that the sword made him Oponn's tool, but as long as their luck was with him, he held on to it. As he enters the Realm of Shadow and speaks with Cotillion, he realizes this is no longer the case. As Paran leaves the Realm he meets Mallet and decides to go after Adjunct Lorn.
9. Towards the end of the book we get a hint of things to come. A figure called The Pannion Seer has started crusade towards the south of Genbackis, Whiskyjack is promoted to Dujek's second in command and Paran is given command of the Bridgeburners. Apsalar decides to leave for home and two Bridgeburners decides to accompany her, Fiddler and one other. Who?

Answer: Kalam

Apsalar, now free of Cotillions control, decides to leave for her home on Itko Kan. Their tale continues in book two "Deadhouse Gates".
10. Among the many, many, MANY characters introduced in "Gardens of the Moon", Kruppe is a fan favorite due to his peculiar way of speaking and his laid back and very formal appearance. Which of the following is one of Kruppe's trademarks?

Answer: Speaking of himself in the third person

While all of the above surely happened sometime in "Gardens of the Moon", there is rarely a sentence spoken by Kruppe in which he does not refer to himself in the third person.
