Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which instance in "The Silmarillion" was regarded as the "firstfruits" of the Doom of the Mandos?

Answer: The burning of the ships at the Firth of Drengist

Fëanor realized in Araman that he had too few of the Teleri ships to depart with all of the Noldor to Beleriand. Therefore, he gathered his closest followers and departed via the waters of Belegaer to confront Morgoth- in Middle-earth. Upon landing at the Firth of Drengist, Fëanor dubs those he left behind as "needless baggage," and promptly burns the white Teleri ships as a sign of betrayal to Fingolfin.

As for the other choices; Fingon is not slain in Araman, and the other two options occur later in the history.
2. Which of the Valar states: "And yet remain evil. To me shall Feanor come soon."

Answer: Mandos

Following the flight of Melkor, and the later flight of the Noldor, the Valar sat in thought within the Ring of Doom. Upon learning for certain of Fëanor's decision the Valar wept, however Mandos issued forth his Doom upon the Noldor. In this particular instance he foreshadows the death of Fëanor once more.

This quote may sound as if it was uttered by Melkor, but at this point it is likely he was unaware of the flight of the Noldor. Yavanna and Nienna during this time attempted to heal Laurelin and Teleperion, but to no avail.
3. How is Feanor himself killed?

Answer: He receives mortal wounds from Morgoth's balrogs

Following his landing at the Firth of Drengist, Fëanor and his sons burnt the white ships of the Teleri alerting Morgoth's forces of the new belligerent. Promptly the host of Morgoth passed through the Ered Wethrin and caught the Noldor unawares. This was the Second Battle of the Wars of Beleriand, which became known as Dagor-nuin-Giliath (Battle-under-Stars).

Despite the lack of warning the Noldor were victorious and Fëanor pressed forward with his host, but was attacked by balrogs, and separated from his main force.

Here the balrog Gothmog dealt Fëanor a mortal wound and his sons bore him back to Mithrim. Fëanor perished upon a mountain pass and his body fell to the ground as ash.
4. Another instance in which the Doom imposed by Mandos is seen in "The Silmarillion" is when Thingol's heir is slaughtered in another kinslaying among the elves. Who is the heir of Elu Thingol that is killed within his own halls of Menegroth?

Answer: Dior Eluchil

Dior's grandfather, Elu Thingol, recruited dwarves of Nogrod to fasten the Silmaril to the ancient piece jewelry the "Nauglamír." Upon its completion, Thingol demanded it as his own from the dwarves who wished to return it to Nogrod. Thingol was slain in his own halls and the dwarves fled to Nogrod only to be overtaken by the elves of Doriath. Nogrod responded by unleashing a host of its soldiers which Beren defeated at Sarn Athrad.

He bestowed the Nauglamír upon Lúthien who in turn ordered it to be brought to her son Dior in Doriath following her death.

The Sons of Fëanor soon discovered the location of the Silmaril and killed Dior in the Second Kinslaying. The Silmaril was only saved by Dior's daughter, Elwing, who brought the jewel to the Havens of Sirion.
5. For four hundred years this elf of the Noldor maintained the siege of Angband. Following the Dagor Bragollach (Battle of Sudden Flame) he rode alone to Angband and dueled Morgoth himself. Who was this "High King" of the Noldor?

Answer: Fingolfin

For four hundred years the siege of Angband was maintained until Morgoth annihilated the elven defenses in the Dagor Bragollach. Following this defeat, Fingolfin rode up to Angband in such a rage that all who looked upon him thought he was Oromë- the Valar. Before Angband, Fingolfin issued a challenge to a single fight against Morgoth who answered the elf lord and emerged from Angband for his final time. Though Morgoth was of the immortal Valar, Fingolfin managed to wound his foe seven times with his sword Ringil prior to his death.
6. In which of the following locations did the Third Kinslaying occur?

Answer: The Havens of Sirion

The surviving Sons of Fëanor learned that Elwing bore the Silmaril on the Nauglamír and sacked Havens in one of the most brutal battles fought between elf-and-elf. However, Elwing once more managed to escape and brought the Silmaril to Eärendil on the Vingilot.
7. Finrod maintained rule over his city of Nargothrond and his sister was Galadriel. Despite his people being dissuaded by the Sons of Feanor to regain a Silmaril, Finrod Felagund still accompanied Beren on his quest. Who was responsible for this elf lord's death.

Answer: Sauron

When Beren sought Finrod Felagund for aid in his quest for a Silmaril, Celegorm and Curufin dissuaded all but ten of the people of Nargothrond from assisting the two. The group disguised themselves as orcs to pass Tol-in-Gaurhoth, nevertheless, they were captured by Sauron and imprisoned. One by one each was killed by werewolves, until only Beren and Finrod remained. Finrod was mortally wounded while trying to save Beren from a werewolf, however he was the first elf to be reincarnated in Valinor.
8. Which elf was shown the secret valley of Tumladen, by Ulmo, and instructed to construct a city there?

Answer: Turgon

Ulmo appeared and instructed the elf lord, Turgon, to construct the city of Gondolin in the valley of Tumladen. This valley was concealed by the Encircling Mountains and remained Morgoth's primary target for quite some time. For most of its lifespan little traffic was seen between the great city and the outside world until Turgon came to the elves' aid in Nirnaeth Arnoediad. Morgoth finally discovered the hidden city upon capturing the king's nephew Maeglin who betrayed its location. Turgon perished defending his city from the onslaught of Morgoth's army.
9. Which elf/man ended the Doom of Mandos by bringing a Silmaril to the Undying Lands?

Answer: Earendil

Eärendil was born to the man Tuor, and elf Idril in the city of Gondolin. After the sacking of Gondolin he fled to the Havens of Sirion where he and his wife, Elwing, departed with the Silmaril to Valinor. The first and only mortals to enter the Undying Lands, he set foot in Tirion. Eventually the Valar had him come before them and accepted his plea for help.

They then ordered him to protect the sun and moon in his ship the Vingilot. Eärendil sails in the skies with the Silmaril on the Nauglamír.
10. What is the fate of the remaining two Silmarils?

Answer: Maedhros and Maglor steal the jewels and fall into a fiery pit and the ocean, respectively

Following the War of Wrath the Doom of Mandos was fulfilled when the remaining Sons of Fëanor stole the two remaining Silmarils from Eönwë and the Valar. However, each elves' hands were burnt, and Maedhros threw himself into a fiery pit while Maglor fell into the sea.

Here the three Silmarils remained for many ages to come (in the air, sea, and beneath the earth) until the Dagor Dagorath. Then Fëanor shall return and recover the Silmarils and forfeit them to Yavanna in order to rekindle the light of the Two Trees of Valinor.
