Question 1 of 10
1. Finally, the Silmarils are in your possession and you are free of the Valar who chained and humiliated you. You rest upon your dark throne from where you will seek the dominion of all Middle-earth. From your high tower, you gaze upon the lands that have become infested with these weak creatures, the Eldar, as they name themselves. At your command, your orcs issue south to break their wills. Though your armies are eventually defeated, they did manage to bring back a prize: the head of Lenwe's son, the leader of the Nandorin. What was his name? Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. You see a great flame and hear the clamoring and shouting of an army. You search west, then a bit south, and find the source. Teleri ships are ablaze at Losgar! Further east a host of the Noldor is making camp near the Lake of Mithrim! Your armies descend upon them swiftly, and the second conflict ensues. What do the Elves you hold captive in your mines call this battle? Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. You stare in wonder at the furthest east, as Isil traverses the rim of the world, fearing what this omen forebodes. Then a great, burning light blazes forth. You hear the shrill cries of your panicking servants. The very earth is rebelling against you! It springs forth life - you did not command this! You call back your forces and descend to the deepest pits of Angband. From what are you hiding? Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. Your gaze turns east, for watchful spies have brought you tidings of utmost importance. At the sun's first rising, a new race has woken, and some among them speak of journeying westward. You conceal yourself under shadow and depart Angband; for you recognize these creatures as the Atani, Men. Some of the Second-born will know you as lord. To what region do you travel? Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. Your gaze turns now closer to home: to your very doors. For one is there, sounding his horn in challenge. His fists upon your iron doors echo through the depths of Angband, and you are afraid. The Elven-king below appears fierce as Orome. Your servants sense your fear! You hesitate, but you must descend and face Fingolfin, High King of the Noldor. You hurl your hammer Grond expertly, but he evades, and his sword Ringil slashes. How many times in total are you wounded? Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. It seems now that a cloak is being drawn over your eyes. You can't fight it. Her song fills your hall wraps itself around you. You must fight this slumber that is overcoming you. You seem to awake, but everything is black. You remember this place from ages past: the Outer Void, where once you sought the Imperishable Flame. From some distant, unknown source, you hear a melody, sweetly sung. This is not the songs of the Ainur. Who is singing this enchanting tune? Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. It is now time to launch your next offensive against the cursed Eldar and their Atani allies, and you have a secret weapon: the treachery of men. If not for this house of men, your designs would come to naught. Though the other Easterlings fled in terror or stayed true to their Elf-lords, this one house, turning on and attacking the rear of Feanor's sons in the midst of the battle, is all you needed. What do these traitors call themselves? Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. Your gaze turns to the prisoner bound to a seat near your throne. Your delight in the anguish of your prisoner Hurin is nearly fulfilled. You feign pity and release him. But your spies flock round about him and a spell chains his thoughts and actions to you. You gaze upon him from your high tower, wandering to and fro about Beleriand. Finally he comes to a stop before the sheer cliffs at the feet of the Echoriath. He begins to yell into the empty sky. For whom does he yell? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. Your gaze turns toward a prisoner, being dragged to your feet. He and his party were captured while mining. His words are proudly defiant and he bears the stature of elven nobility; but you sense the jealousy and envy hidden deep within his heart. You finally break his will and he reveals all to you. Including the very location of Gondolin, and secret ways into its hidden vale. Who is this elf? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. Your gaze falters and your power is diminished! You cannot see beyond the gleaming hosts of the Valar! They have finally come, with the Vanyar. They sweep aside your legions of orcs like dried grass in the flame. Your mighty balrogs are all slain or fled. You unleash your last defense: the Uroloki. But even Ancalagon the Black falls, his body broken upon the Thangorodrim. You flee to the depths of Angband, but there is no escaping judgement. The Valar bind you with the chain you once wore and thrust you through the Doors of Night beyond the Walls of the World, into the Timeless Void. You will return, to have your vengeance. Who is that shining white light guarding the Walls to prevent this? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts

Answer: Denethor

Quoting Silmarillion, "Of the Sindar": "...Denethor was cut off and surrounded upon the hill of Amon Ereb. There he fell and all his nearest kind about him ... his people lamented him ever after and took no king again."

The Nandorin were known after as the Laiquendi, the green elves, because they wore green clothing as camouflage. Relying on stealth and poisoned arrows to protect their borders, they never went forth into open battle again.

Answer: Battle-under-Stars

The Dagor-nuin-Giliath, the Battle-under-stars, is named so because it was the last fought before the rising of Isil, the moon. The Noldor had just begun to make camp when they were assailed by a host of balrogs and orcs. Feanor, High-king of the Noldor, fought long against a group of balrogs, led by Gothmog, lord of balrogs. But, finally, he was slain.

As the spirit of fire that dwelt within him passed to the Halls of Mandos, his body was burned to ash by its intensity.

Answer: Anar

Anar: the sun, driven by the maia Arien. The sun was the remnant of the light of Laurelin, the tree of gold.

Isil: the moon, driven by Tilion. The moon was the last of the light of Telperion, the tree of silver.

The moon rose first, traversed Ilmen (the sky) seven times then, while in the furthest east, the sun rose in glory, from the west. At this Morgoth and his forces hid in Angband and he sent out a cloud of reek to hide his realm.

Answer: Hildorien

Quoting Silmarillion, "Of The Coming of Men Into the West": "But it was said afterwards among the Eldar that when Men awoke in Hildorien at the rising of the Sun, the spies of Morgoth were watchful, and tidings were soon brought to him; and this seemed to him so great a matter that secretly under shadow he himself departed from Angband, and forth into Middle-earth, leaving to Sauron the command of the War. Of his dealings with Men the Eldar indeed knew nothing..."

Answer: eight

Quoting Silmarillion, "Of the Ruin of Beleriand": "...he wounded Morgoth with seven wounds... Yet with his last and desperate stroke, Fingolfin hewed the foot with Ringil, and the black blood gushed forth, filling the pits of Grond."

Fingolfin, distraught at what he thought to be the destruction of Beleriand and the utter defeat of the Elves, rode to the doors of Angband with such fury that the servants of Morgoth fled in terror, mistaking him for Orome of the Valar. He challenged Morgoth and fought valiantly, but in the end Morgoth was still one of the Valar, though his power had diminished, and Fingolfin was slain.

Answer: Luthien

The daughter of Elven-king Thingol and Maian-queen Melian, Luthien was the fairest elf to ever live within Arda. She followed her lover, Beren, into Morgoth's fortress where her song of enchantment cast the servants of evil into a deep slumber. This allowed Beren to use the knife Angrist to cut free one Silmaril. Before another could be cut, the knife broke and Morgoth began to stir from the spell.

Answer: the sons of Ulfang

The sons of Ulfang did not get to enjoy the spoils of victory, however, as they were all slain in battle soon after their treachery became apparent. It was the soldiers hiding within the surrounding forest that completed what they started. For this the Easterlings were rewarded with the northern province of Dor'lomin; though they had been promised the rich lands of Beleriand.

But what else could they have expected from the Dark Lord?

Answer: Turgon: Lord of Gondolin

Thorondor sees and reports to Turgon Hurin's desperate cries, but Hurin's pleas go unanswered. Though Turgon's heart nearly breaks at the plight of the man who once dwelt in Gondolin and saved his life in the Fens of Serech, he cannot jeopardize the fates of all those dwelling within the Hidden Kingdom.

But Morgoth is watching, and finally he has at least a clue as to where Turgon's fortress is located. For Turgon and all those with him had disappeared as if overnight and their whereabouts had plagued Morgoth with fear many times. Later, Hurin kills Mim the petty-dwarf and insults Thingol, king of Doriath, before Melian is finally able to free him of the curse of Morgoth.

Answer: Maeglin

Maeglin was caught at unawares and was dragged to Morgoth's throne. He was tortured and resisted long. But finally he relented to Morgoth's will and revealed all. Maeglin was promised lordship of Gondolin and Idril, daughter of Turgon and his cousin, as his wife. Before he could reap these rewards however, he was slain by Tuor.

Answer: Earendil

The mortal Earendil and Elwing, his elven wife, sailed in the vessel Vingilot to Valinor, where they begged for the pardon and aide of the Valar. Manwe decided that the choice of which Kindred they would be fated would be given to Earendil and Elwing, and their children. Earendil chose to be counted elven, for his wife's sake, who remained elven.

Then the vessel Vingilot was blessed, in which Earendil fulfills his passion as a mariner by sailing the Outer Seas. In the final battle against Morgoth, when the dragons are loosed, Earendil descends in Vingilot, at the head of the Eagles of Manwe. Earendil himself slays Ancalagon.

Afterwards, he his charged with the duty of watching the ramparts to prevent Morgoth's return. But Morgoth will return and the final battle will commence in which the fates of all kindreds will be decided.
