Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Galadriel was one of the most important Noldor Elves in Middle-Earth's history. What was the name of her father, as told in "The Silmarillion"?

Answer: Finarfin

Galadriel was the daughter of Finarfin, third son of Finwe, King of the Noldor. She was the fifth and last child of Finarfin. Her brothers were Finrod Felagund, Angrod, Aegnor and Orodreth. She and Finrod were the most alike in personality.
2. Galadriel was only half Noldo, with her mother hailing from another of the three Eldarin kindreds, as referenced in "The Silmarillion". Which one?

Answer: The Teleri

Her mother was Earwen, daughter of Olwe of the Teleri, who dwelled in the city of Alqualonde at the shores of Aman. According to some late notes by Tolkien, Celeborn, Galadriel's husband, was one of the relatives of Olwe, either son or grandson, something that makes him an uncle or first cousin, thus making their marriage taboo, for the Eldar do not marry so close.
3. Galadriel's role in the Rebellion of the Noldor was the subject of many, often contradictory, texts by Tolkien. In the published "Silmarillion", is she referenced as having sworn the Oath of Feanor?

Answer: No

It is said in "The Silmarillion" that Galadriel swore no oaths, but Feanor's words about Middle-Earth made her desire a realm of her own. It is also unclear what was her part in the Kinslaying at Alqualonde with one version stating she did not participate in it and with another saying that she fought against Feanor in defense of her mother's kin, the Teleri.
4. We know that, during the First Age, Galadriel married Celeborn. According to the published "Silmarillion", Celeborn was a relative of King Thingol. What was the name of Thingol's realm?

Answer: Doriath

Doriath was situated in the middle of the land known as Beleriand. It was populated by Sindarin Elves (aka Grey Elves). Thingol was the King and his Queen was Melian the Maia. Doriath, which, according to "The Silmarillion" was where Galadriel and Celeborn met, was sacked twice during the First Age, once by the Dwarves of Nogrod and once by the Sons of Feanor.
5. During the Second Age, Galadriel received one of the three Elven Rings. Which one, as told in both "Unfinished Tales" and "The Lord of the Rings"?

Answer: Nenya, the Ring of Water

Nenya, as well as Vilya and Narya, was made by Celebrimbor alone and Sauron's hand never polluted it. Nenya's power was the protection of the realm of Lothlorien and its concealment from evil, however it could not withstand the One Ring. After it was destroyed, the power of the Three Elven Rings faded and Lothlorien's beauty faded and the land was depopulated.
6. We know that Celeborn and Galadriel had one daughter, Celebrian, who later married Elrond Half-Elven. However, in one of the texts concerning Galadriel in "Unfinished Tales", a son of hers is named. Who was he?

Answer: Amroth

This is quite a puzzling reference, since Amroth, King of Lorien, is usually referred to as son of the Sindar lord Amdir, who was killed at the Battle of Dagorlad, in the year 3434 of the Second Age. In the disputed text, Amroth lived in Eregion with his parents and his sister, Celebrian. It seems, however, that Tolkien later changed his mind again and Amroth's father became Amdir once more.
7. Galadriel was not the first Queen of Lothlorien. She obtained that title when the previous King fled the place. To what event is the King's flight attributed, as per "Unfinished Tales"?

Answer: The Dwarves accidentally awaken a Balrog in Moria

This happened in the year 1981 of the Third Age. The King of Lorien, Amroth fled the place in order to be with his beloved, Nimrodel. Nimrodel had promised to marry Amroth if he brought her to a safe place, but no such place could be found at that time.

Although we do not know for certain what happened to Amroth and Nimrodel, we are told that the kingship of Lothlorien passed to Celeborn and Galadriel.
8. We know from "The Lord of the Rings" that Galadriel welcomed the Fellowship of the Ring in her realm after their escape from Moria. During their first meeting, she gave each of the members of the Fellowship a searching look, to test their resolve. Which member of the Fellowship considered it a temptation?

Answer: Boromir

Boromir had doubts concerning the wisdom of the passing through Lothlorien and we can say he was biased against the Queen of the Golden Wood.
Galadriel was in turn tested herself when Frodo freely offered her the One Ring. Although the Ring would give her the power to fulfill her original ambitions, she refused it, accepting that the Elves would fade from Middle-Earth and that the dominion of Men was the thing to come. At that moment, her ban from Valinor was lifted.
9. According to "The Lord of the Rings", during the War of the Ring Lothlorien was attacked thrice by Sauron's forces and the attacks were repelled by the valor of its inhabitants and by the power of Nenya. Was there any condition on which the forces of evil would conquer the Golden Wood?

Answer: Yes

The condition was that Sauron come there himself, something he could do had he regained the One Ring. But, since he did not, Lothlorien held. When the War of the Ring ended, the leaders of Lothlorien met with Thranduil, King of Mirkwood, and renamed the forest "Wood of the Greenleaves". Galadriel had a major part in its cleansing from evil.
10. After the War of the Ring and Sauron's downfall, Galadriel departed Middle-Earth. As told in "The Lord of the Rings", her last significant action before departing was to destroy one of Sauron's fortresses. Which one?

Answer: Dol Guldur

Dol Guldur was the fortress where Sauron was hiding under the guise of the Necromancer for most of the Third Age. By the time of the War of the Ring, three Nazgul dwelled there. From that fortress began the attacks on both Lothlorien and Mirkwood. Galadriel finally cleansed it in a manner resembling that of Luthien Tinuviel when she cleansed Tol-in-Gaurhoth, a fortress Sauron had occupied in the First Age.
