Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How did Daisy catch Boy's attention first?

Answer: She came down to dinner in trousers and with a moustache drawn on her face.

While his father disapproved, Boy was fascinated. Much later she used the same method again to lure him into a marriage proposal.
2. Why did Carla stop adoring Werner?

Answer: She thought he was a coward

Well, he was a bit of a womaniser, but that wasn't the point. She thought he was afraid to step on the Nazis' toes because he wanted to keep his job. This was true in fact, but she didn't know he was spying for the Russians at that time.
3. When Lloyd escaped from the Germans after he was taken prisoner, how did he get back to England?

Answer: Via Spain

It wasn't his first time in Spain, he'd been fighting there in the civil war before. Later he used the knowledge gained on that journey to help other Allied soldiers escape from France.
4. There are multiple pairs of half-brothers in the book. One of them consists of ...

Answer: ... a Red Army intelligence officer and an American counter-intelligence officer

Volodya Peshkov is a highly ranked Red Army officer working in the intelligence sector and responsible for stealing secrets around nuclear weapons from the
US. Greg Peshkov works in American counter-intelligence, trying to avoid exactly such theft.
5. When did Boy Fitzherbert agree to divorce Daisy, so she could marry Lloyd?

Answer: Never, but when he died he knew Lloyd would marry her

He died more or less in the arms of his half brother, telling him 'you can marry the bitch now' after they both attacked a railway line of strategic importance in France.
6. Why did Volodya's mother keep six cases of vodka in store?

Answer: She assumed Russia would lose the war

The Germans were getting nearer and nearer. She expected to lose all privileges as soon as they took the city, so she wanted to use the vodka for buying food on the black market after the Germans were in Moscow.
7. What went wrong with Woody and Joanne's engagement?

Answer: She died during the attack on Pearl Harbor.

The whole family was on Hawaii that day, visiting Woody's brother Chuck. They were on a small boat when the Japanese attacked. All but Joanne survived.
8. What did Carla do with Joachim, her mother's piano pupil?

Answer: Killed him

He found out they were spying. So she felt it was her only chance for survival, really.
9. Who or what killed Thomas Macke, after he found out that Werner was a spy?

Answer: Werner

He was nearly killed by a bomb, but did survive it. In hospital Carla tried to kill him, but found she couldn't murder a patient, no matter how much he deserved it.
10. What's the nationality of the mother of Greg Peshkov's child?

Answer: American

It's Jackie, the love of his youth. His son is already six years old when Greg finds out about him.
