The narrator wryly explains the situation to the audience while we see the two duelers far from camera. This event leaves Barry without a father, which could be why he gets into so much trouble throughout the film. Perhaps if he'd had a second parent, he'd have gotten through the whole Nora/Quin fiasco without violence and wouldn't have started his life as an adventurer.

Answer: He's robbed by highwaymen.

A very polite father/son team takes his money and horse, but they let him keep his boots after hearing his story. With no money or transportation, Barry joins the army.

Answer: Grogan dies

Grogan had been Barry's second in the duel. He meets Barry in the army and tells him that Quin didn't really die in the duel: the whole thing was set up so that Barry would leave and make Nora free to marry Quin. After Grogan's death in battle, Barry has no more notions about heroism in war and looks for a way out.

The Chevalier de Balibari is suspected of being a spy. Barry is overcome at meeting someone from Ireland for the first time in years and immediately tells the Chevalier who he is. The two start cheating at cards together and eventually contrive a plan to leave the country and get Barry away from the army.

Barry goes about seducing Lady Lyndon even though her husband is alive, albeit sick. Lord Lyndon knows that Barry's trying to take his place but dies soon. Though never stated in the film, in the book, Lady Lyndon's first name is Honoria.

Lady Lyndon marries Barry soon after Lord Lyndon dies, and Bullingdon thinks she's made a fool of herself. He doesn't think Barry loves his mother, and that Barry married her to gain status for himself. He's very perceptive. He later calls Barry "Irish upstart" and "low-bred ruffian".

He's allowed to beat his stepson in private, as we see in two scenes, but doing the same in public ends his chances at getting a title. His debts are called in, his invitations are ignored, and a former friend refuses to eat with him.

For Bryan's birthday, Barry buys him a horse. Bryan finds out about it and can't resist the urge to ride it early without adult help. He can't handle the horse, falls off, hits his head, and dies in a few days.

When Barry buys the animal, he offers 75 guineas for a 100-guinea horse, but the seller won't sell for less than 80. Barry accepts that price, possibly because he remembers that his father died in a duel "over the purchase of some horses".

Bullingdon is so scared after his pistol goes off that he vomits before Barry takes his turn. Barry fires into the ground, perhaps hoping that this action will calm Bullingdon's anger towards him, but he's wrong. Bullingdon wants the duel to continue and hits Barry with his next shot.

The doctor amputates his leg to prevent hemorrhage. Bullingdon then pays Barry to leave England, offering 500 guineas a year if he never returns. Considering that he has no friends and no credit left, Barry takes the money, though he can never see Lady Lyndon again.
