Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "A thing of beauty is a joy for ever: Its loveliness increases; it will never pass into nothingness" is a quote Fanny reads from which poem?

Answer: Endymion

Fanny has her siblings purchase "Endymion" in order to find out if Keats "is an idiot or not". She finds these opening lines practically perfect, which is the beginning of her poetry lessons taught by Keats. "Endymion" was not very well received in 1818 when it was published and at the ball, some of Fanny's acquaintances say that Keats' poem was annihilated by the critics, but that "there are immensities as well as immaturities".
2. Which actor plays John Keats?

Answer: Ben Whishaw

Ben Whishaw is an English actor. He has played Sebastian Flyte in the 2008 movie "Brideshead Revisited" and Freddie in the TV series, "The Hour". His breakthrough role was the eponymous character in Trevor Nunn's production of Shakespeare's "Hamlet" put on at the Old Vic Theatre in London.
3. Who sends Fanny a Valentine?

Answer: Mr. Brown

As a jest, Mr. Brown sends Fanny a Valentine. This gesture injures Keats and exposes Fanny as having deceived as to how seriously she is taking her poetry lessons. The Valentine is written as being from "the Suitcase", which is a reference to Fanny describing Mr. Brown's eyes as "suitcase brown". Mr. Brown and Fanny's relationship is very tense and they like to spar with words and tease each other because they view each other as a rival for the affections and attention of John Keats.
4. What is the name of the family that owns the other half of the house that Mr. Brown rents?

Answer: Dilke

Mrs. Dilke in particular takes a particular interest in the life of Mr. Keats and is a good friend of Fanny's mother. She is also concerned that Fanny and Mr. Keats have entered into a toxic relationship for Fanny. The house, Wentworth Place, is in North London and is now a museum.
5. Who directed the film?

Answer: Jane Campion

Jane Campion is a New Zealand-born director and producer who has had success with the films, "The Piano", "Peel" and "Sweetie". Campion also compiled a book of the love letters sent from Keats to Brawne and some of Keats' poetry, with a foreword written by Campion herself.
6. What type of creature does Fanny collect to honour her relationship with John Keats?

Answer: Butterflies

Fanny writes to Keats that she has turned her bedroom into a butterfly farm. She also mentions that her brother Samuel has made a science of the idea and is collecting other insects as well. The butterflies being kept alive in Fanny's bedroom represent hers and Keats' love holding fast while Keats is away and Fanny's best efforts to keep the relationship going.
7. What nickname does Keats sometimes call Fanny?

Answer: Minxstress

Keats calls Fanny a minxstress, which is a combination of minx and mistress. This cleverly highlights her power over Keats through love and her wit and allure that she has. When Keats bids his minxstress farewell, Fanny has just commented that her stitching (as she loves to make clothes) is better than the works of Brown and Keats combined and that she can also make money from it, unlike the two poets.

Although Keats does embody Fanny as his "Bright Star" in the poem, he doesn't actually call her this in the film.
8. Which character fathers an illegitimate child?

Answer: Mr. Brown

Brown has an assignation with the Brawnes' household maid that results in a child. He denies its paternity, but when pressed by Keats faces up to his responsibilities. We do not find out the name of the child when Brown and Abigail bring it to Wentworth Place after Keats has already left for Italy, but we are made aware that it is a boy.
9. Which character says this: "It's my finding in the business of disturbing, you're the expert."?

Answer: Fanny

Fanny says this to Mr. Brown, with whom she is accustomed to bicker. The point of argument is that Mr. Keats is writing poetry and does not want disturbing. Fanny shows through the film that she is prepared to do anything to be with Keats and Brown stands in her way quite a lot, so she gets really good at arguing with him and finding ways to get round him to see Keats.
10. Fill in the Blank: "Abigail, even the Bible is not so dull as you might believe. And that in the ______________ there're some bits so juicy they'd make even a churchman blush."

Answer: Songs of Solomon

The significance of this quote in the movie is that Abigail has an assignation with Mr. Brown because she is taken in by his offer to teach her to read. After this, he gets her pregnant and this means he is unable to help the ill Keats or to accompany him to Italy when his health requires a warmer climate.
11. Where is Keats and Severn's apartment in Rome?

Answer: Piazza di Spagna

Severn, Keats' friend, accompanies his friend to Rome in a bid to save his life. You can visit the house, which is kept how it was when the poets resided there, in its location on the Piazza di Spagna or the Spanish Steps. This house is where Keats died and there is a plaque on the property now and it is also a house that is linked to the poet, Percy Bysshe Shelley.
12. What disease necessitates a move to a warmer climate aka Rome?

Answer: Consumption

Consumption or Tuberculosis weakens Keats to such an extent that he would not survive another winter in Britain. This is the reason he goes to Rome in the Autumn. Keats first contracts the disease when he gets soaked through on the way back from London and he is ill for a long time but when Mr. Brown has to leave Wentworth Place, Keats is forced to live in a hovel in Kentish Town.

He ends up under a shrub at Wentworth Place, where he collapses as he searches for Fanny.
13. Do Fanny and John Keats get officially engaged?

Answer: Yes

After John turns up at the Brawne house incredibly ill, Fanny petitions her mother to permit them to announce their betrothal. Keats had already given a ring to Fanny, but Mrs. Brawne did not think it a prudent match. Mrs. Brawne says that Fanny is the subject of gossip in the town because of her relationship with the poet but because Keats is going to have to go to Italy, Fanny wants to go with him as his wife.
14. What instrument is Samuel Brawne playing just before Mr. Brown announces John Keats' passing?

Answer: Violin

The violin playing lends a melancholy atmosphere to the scene, foreshadowing the impending announcement and Fanny's sorrow. Samuel through the film is shown to support his family, whenever Fanny runs out of the house with heartache Samuel never hesitates to follow her. Samuel is not as vocal as other members of the family are but as the sole male figure in the family is strength, even as a boy, is very much felt.
15. At the end of the film, we see Fanny dressed in mourning clothes wandering the Heath. As she walks, which poem of her dead fiance is she reciting?

Answer: Bright Star

As the poem that gives its name to the title of the whole movie, it is fitting that it concludes the movie. We hear this poem earlier in the movie when Keats is writing it and at this point in the movie it is a sign that their relationship is blossoming but by the end, it is a remembrance of Keats.
