Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the beginning of the movie, the narrator says that Charlie's family was not rich, powerful, or what else?

Answer: Well-connected

"This is the story of an ordinary boy named Charlie Bucket. He was not faster or stronger or more clever than other children. His family was not rich, powerful or well-connected. In fact, they barely had enough to eat. Charlie Bucket was the luckiest boy in the world. He just didn't know it yet."

This comment from the narrator is the first thing we hear in the movie, as the movie shows us the protagonist. Then we see his house which is a very poorly-built house. Inside the house, we see four grandparents sharing one bed, the mother cooking soup for the whole family, and the dad bringing a present to Charlie.
2. Charlie built a model of Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory out of what?

Answer: Toothpaste caps

Charlie's father worked at the toothpaste factory. The narrator says that "The hours were long and the pay was terrible, yet occasionally, there were unexpected surprises." Mr. Bucket would sometimes come home with a toothpaste cap that he'd give to Charlie to help him build a model of Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory.
3. Who used to work at the factory?

Answer: Grandpa Joe

His wife and the other grandpa back him up on this. Grandma Georgina just says "I like grapes." Grandpa Joe says "Of course I was a much younger man in those days." The flashback scenes that the movie shows contradict this quote. He looked exactly the same in the flashbacks as he did in the rest of the movie.
4. What happened to Prince Pondicherry's chocolate palace?

Answer: It melted in the sun.

Prince Pondicherry asked Willy Wonka to make a palace entirely out of chocolate. Wonka and his workers did exactly that, but Wonka warned the prince that the palace would not last long and that he and his wife better start eating right away. The prince responded that he was planning on living in the palace, not eating it. Wonka turned out to be right. The prince sent an urgent telegram requesting a new palace, apparently not learning his lesson. Wonka had too many of his own problems to give the prince another soon-to-melt palace, anyway.

Oddly, Grandpa Joe said that Wonka once made ice cream that never melted. Why Wonka could do that with ice cream but not with chocolate was never explained.
5. In Tim Burton's version, does Arthur Slugworth tell all the ticket-finders about Wonka's ever-lasting gobstopper?

Answer: No

In the 1971 movie "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory", Arthur Slugworth is a character we see several times in the movie, usually telling the ticket-finders about the gobstopper. In the 2005 movie, that doesn't happen. He is only mentioned once in the entire movie, when Grandpa Joe tells Charlie about all the other chocolatiers sending in spies to steal Wonka's work.
6. What adjective did Grandpa George predict would describe the finder of the first golden ticket?

Answer: Fat

Grandpa George: "Mark my words. He who finds the first ticket, will be fat, fat, fat." The next thing we see is proof that he is right. A fat German child named Augustus Gloop finds the first ticket. Augustus's actor, Philip Wiegratz, was not fat in real life. He was dressed in a sumo suit to appear fat, unlike in the 1971 movie where Augustus doesn't appear fat at all.
7. Who finds the second golden ticket?

Answer: A woman at Mr. Salt's factory

Mr. Salt, desperate to appease his bratty daughter, asks his workers, who are all female, to take wrappers off the chocolate bars to find a golden ticket. One woman finds one and tries to hide it in her pocket, but Mr. Salt catches her and takes the ticket and gives it to Veruca. In Charlie's opinion, that woman was not the villain and she should have had the right to keep the ticket.
8. Who finds the third ticket?

Answer: Violet Beauregard

When we first see Violet, she's showing off her karate skills taking down several men who are more than twice her size. Her mom brags that Violet has won 263 trophies. Her mom also says "She's just a driven young woman. I don't know where she gets it" in a sarcastic way. Mom and daughter wear matching outfits and hairstyles, which is a big hint to "Where she gets it." Violet is an arrogant girl who only cares about winning trophies and prizes; she doesn't care about other people's feelings except her mom's.
9. Who is the only kid to use his or her intelligence to find a ticket?

Answer: Mike Teavee

Mike uses his knowledge of math to find a golden ticket. He didn't even eat the chocolate bar because he hates chocolate. This outrages Grandpa George, who presumably swears at the TV while Mrs. Bucket covers Charlie's ears.
10. Does Charlie get a golden ticket for his birthday?

Answer: No

He gets one chocolate bar a year for his birthday. His birthday present does not have a golden ticket. He shares the bar with his family, although they don't want to share his birthday present.
