Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Both the working title and end title song of the 1989 classic 'Weekend at Bernie's' was which of the following?

Answer: Hot and Cold

'Weekend at Bernie's' tells the story of accounts Larry Wilson (Andrew McCarthy) and Richard Parker (Jonathan Silverman) who turn up to their boss's home for a weekend of fun, sun, and girls. What they don't know is that Bernie (played by Terry Kiser), is behind the embezzlement they have discovered and plans to have them bumped off for their efforts. That's cold.

All unaware of their impending demise, Larry and Richard arrive at the party. To their horror, they discover that someone has killed Bernie. But why let that stand in the way of their entertainment? So they don't kill the buzz, poor old Bernie is propped up on a banana lounge and the party commences.

'Hot and Cold' was written by Andy Summers and Winston Matthews and sung by Jermaine Stewart; while the screnplay was written by Robert Klane and directed by Ted Kotcheff.
2. What 1971 movie's title is also a phrase meaning to cease 'in a sudden and abrupt manner'?

Answer: Cold Turkey

'Cold Turkey' tells the story of the town of Eagle Rock, Iowa, the residents of which take up a challenge from a tobacco company to quit smoking (cold turkey!), for 30 days with a prize of $25 million in the offing. The tobacco company don't really want them to win though, and try to sabotage the contest.

The Reverend Clayton Brooks, played by Dick Van Dyke, cajoles the town's population into participating, even the irascible Dr Proctor (portrayed by Barnard Hughes). The cast includes Bob Newhart as an executive of tobacco company, and a cameo by Spiro Agnew.

The film ends happily when the town achieves its goal.
3. The 2017 SciFi movie 'Cold Skin', tells the story of what kind of scientist, bound for the Atlantic?

Answer: Meteorologist

'Cold Skin' is based on a 2002 by Albert Sánchez Piñol, with the script by Jesus Olmo. Distributed by Samuel Goldwyn Films, it is the work of several European production companies. It tells the story of a meteorologist (a scientist who reports and forecasts weather conditions) who travels to the South Atlantic, and meets the caretaker of the lighthouse, Gruner (played by Ray Stevenson).

The meteorologist, who becomes known as 'Friend', has a series of adventures when he discovers a race of strange people on the island.

He discovers a ship-wrecked boat but it is not suitable to leave the island with. Gruner is eventually killed by one of the creatures and Friend takes up the role of lighthouse keeper. The movie had mixed reviews and was not destined to be a box-office success.
4. Released straight to video in 2019, in 'Cold Blood Legacy' who plays the role of the protagonist, a wanted killer?

Answer: Jean Reno

'Cold Blood Legacy' stars the familiar face of Jean Reno, a notorious hit-man named Henry who lives a solitary life in an isolated cabin at the edge of a lake. He risks his anonymity to save the life of a wounded woman by taking her to hospital when she falls off her sled in front to his house.

Universally canned and touted as a good way to waste an hour and a half of your life, the only thing critics loved was the setting. Ostensibly located in Washington State, the outdoor scenes were actually filmed in the Carpathian mountains, Ukraine. And though the critics gave it the cold-shoulder, Jean Reno movies always warm my heart.
5. Hitting our screens in 2019, what movie tells the story of the mysterious death of a Secretary-General of the United Nations?

Answer: Cold Case Hammarskjöld

This documentary by Danish film maker Mads Brügger tells of the investigations into the death of Dag Hammarskjöld. As with many investigative documentaries, it posits a number of theories but no real conclusions. Hammarskjöld was killed when his Douglas DC-6B aircraft, Albertina, went down in Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia). It is alleged that a Belgian-British mercenary pilot named Jan van Risseghem shot the plane down. It further alleges some (ephemeral) involvement with a South African Institute for Maritime Research (SAIMR), that might have been a pawn of either MI6 or the CIA, or alternatively, that a white supremacist organisation attempted to spread HIV/AIDS among black Africans - though the link to Hammarskjöld's death is a little tenuous.

The film won the "Directing Award: World Cinema Documentary" category at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival.
6. Filmed in the chilly environs of Vancouver, British Columbia, by whom was 'That Cold Day in the Park' (1969) directed?

Answer: Robert Altman

'That Cold Day in the Park' was one of Altman's earliest films, and stars Sandy Dennis as Francis Austen and Michael Burns as The Boy. Written by Richard Miles, the novel on which the film was based was set in Paris; however, for the movie, the location was moved to Vancouver.

It tells the story of a wealthy but troubled woman who goes to fantastic lengths to make a man she met in the park a permanent house guest. Though he climbs out of the window to escape her attentions he, a little peculiarly, comes back. After some complicated and bizarre drama, Michael invites a prostitute to his room, which upsets Francis. She enters Michael's room and kills the prostitute, and the film ends. It has not stood the test of time, as modern critics give it, at best, lukewarm reviews. I reckon this one should be iced.
7. 'In the Cold of Night' (1990) includes in the cast which actress, better known for her work on 'The Birds'?

Answer: Tippi Hedren

The film tells the story of a high-profile fashion photographer named Scott Bruin (played by Jess Lester), who has been tormented by a series of progressively disturbing and violent dreams in which he savagely attacks and murders a young woman named Kimberly Shawn (portrayed by Adrianne Sachs). He investigates and discovers that his life might actually be in real danger.

Tippi Hedren was born in Minnesota, starting her career uncredited in 'The Petty Girl' in 1950, but really shot to fame as Melanie Daniels in Hitchcock's 'The Birds' in 1963. She plays the role of Clara in 'In the Cold of Night'.
8. Tick Tock! Two taglines of what 2000 movie are "Lock your car or it may be..." and "Ice cold. Hot wired"?

Answer: Gone in Sixty Seconds

In 'Gone in Sixty Seconds' Nicholas Cage, portraying Memphis Raines, is tasked with 'acquiring' 50 high-end supercars for British gangster Raymond Calitri. His brother Kip (played by Giovanni Ribisi) has been kidnapped by Calitri but will be released once the cars are in Calitri's possession. Filmed in Long Beach, California with a slightly Keystone Cops ending, it turns out alright, and Kip is released. The movie, though not popular with the critics, grossed $237 million, perhaps in part due to its high-calibre cast which included Angelina Jolie, Scott Cann and Robert Duvall.

'Gone in 60 Seconds' had three taglines: "Ice Cold, Hot Wired"; "Cut to the Chase"; and "Lock your car or it may be... GONE IN 60 SECONDS". The phrase 'boosting' cars, the same as hot wiring, was made famous by the 2001 movie 'Fast and the Furious'.
9. What 2012 Bruce Willis/Sigourney Weaver movie tells the story of a family kidnapped while on a sailing trip in Spain?

Answer: The Cold Light of Day

It all hinges on a missing briefcase. Martin Shaw (played by Bruce Willis) is not the advisor for the U.S. government his family thinks he is, but a CIA agent. All the family except his son Will (Henry Cavill) are kidnapped during a holiday in Spain; Martin escapes and he and Will confront his CIA handler, Jean Carrack (Sigourney Weaver) regarding the whereabouts of the briefcase that will get the rest of the family released. After an exciting series of encounters with Mossad, CIA representatives and the kidnappers, the family are released and the briefcase is retrieved.

Gives me chills down my spine!
10. Complete the name of the World War II movie set in North Africa: 'Ice Cold in _________'.

Answer: Alex

This 1958 movie stars John Mills (Captain Anson) and Anthony Quayle (Captain van der Poel) and tells the tale of a military troupe that trekked eastwards from the port city of Tobruk on Libya's coast to Alexandria in Egypt, about 660 km. It was filmed mostly in Libya because of the recently concluded Suez crisis.

They discover they have a German spy making contact with the enemy by using a radio set. However, the spy (Quayle) ends up saving the lives of the group and, upon arrival at their destination, they do not hand him over to the military police.

The 'ice cold' in the title refers to having a cold drink once they reached Alexandria. Make mine a daiquiri, please!
